Love this Backstory, because put in perspective why Shunsui was one of the people that helped Rukia during the Soul Society arc. Rukia and Nanao's mom both convinced of stupid crimes and during Rukia's execution he finally could help and prevent someone from being executed because of a stupid rule

#SundayRundown Bleach TYBW Katen (nicknamed Ohana) is Shunsui’s main Zanpakutō spirit while Kyōkotsu (nicknamed Okyō) is one half of the manifested spirit of Shunsui’s Zanpakutō, who’s known for hide & seek games, and therefore hid the Ise clan’s sacred ritual sword being passed down to Nanao. The Divine Zanpakuto Shinken Hakkyoken (Divine sword eight mirrors) It is a Holy sword that has the ability to take and reflect the power of deities into itself and disperses it off into eight directions. The blade itself reflects the power of the opponent that its wielder is facing; when confronted by the sword while utilizing a great enough power, opponents are unable to even see it due to how bright it appears to be at the time. A blow from the sword results in energy being dispersed in multiple directions at once. This ability was foreshadowed upon Lille Barro with Senjimaru’s Bankai which showed him shooting at mirrors and ended up shooting himself reflected upon him. Tragically as Nanao’s mother believed and assured that only members of the Ise clan would be affected little did she realize that the curse affects anyone in related association to them such as his brother, and would go on to affect everyone precious to him: Yamamoto, Unohana and Ukitake.

Bleach TYBW Episode 37- “Shadow’s Gone” Keyword Page 1: Katen Kyōkotsu (“Bones of Heavenly Blooming Madness”) “The zanpakuto of Shunsui Kyōraku, current Head Captain of the 13 Court Guard Squads. It being a dual zanpakutō is an unusually rare pair of swords amongst the many zanpakutō in Soul Society. Its Shikai has the ability to turn children's games into reality. The rules of the games are defined by Ohana (A.k.a Katen), the main spirit personality of the Katen Kyōkotsu, and everyone, including Kyōraku, who enters the spiritual pressure domain is forced to follow these rules. The content is easily influenced by Ohana's moods, but the essence of the rules is ‘live if you win, die if you lose’. The Bankai has the ability to turn adult theater plays into reality. ‘Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū’ subjects both Kyoraku and his opponent to various phenomena likened to the stories told by Shunsui, ending in the enemy's inevitable demise at the end of the play.” Episode 37 Keyword Page 2: Shinken Hakkyōken (“Divine Sword Eight Mirror Sword”) “A zanpakutō inherited from generation to generation by the matriarch of the Ise family, a family of priests. It is said to have the ’power to confront the gods’, by receiving their power in its eight mirrored body and to disperse it in all directions. The sword is mainly used in rituals, and as it has no blade, it cannot conventionally cut people.”

There are people who ship Shunsui and Nanao and you can see why it's weird due to her being his niece. The way Shunsui acted in a "romantic" way with her in the first place is to hide the fact that they were related. After all, it's well known how he's with the girls and not acting the same way with Nanao could raise suspicions within her. That was Shunsui's plan at least but he didn't know that Nanao already knew the truth. Also, if you look back to Senjumaru's Bankai we can see that she defeated Lille Barro by reflecting his own attacks. Also Shinken Hakkyoken translates to Eight Mirror Sword and there were eight mirrors in the dome that Senjumaru put Lille in. Similarly, Pernida was engulfed by black soil. Black soil in Japanese means Kurotsuchi. And Mayuri Kurotsuchi was the one who defeated Pernida in the end by giving him cancer. So there's a theory that Senjumaru's Bankai is a reality weaving Bankai. Shunsui was told that he wouldn't run into the curse by hiding the sword anymore but that wasn't the case. He lost his mentor or father figure in Yamamoto, colleague in Unohana and a friend in Ukitake. Also there's a theory that this Shinken Hakkyoken is the sword used to dismember the Soul King. That's why Central 46 was quick to execute Nanao's mother. Plus if you go back to the Soul Society arc you can see Nanao being visibly distraught when Rukia's execution was being carried out and Shunsui comforting her at that particular moment. No one seemed to pick up anything from that until this moment when we were told that her mother was also executed. That's some subtle hint at her past which Kubo only told us way after the first hint was shown.

Kyoky

Yup so crazy when you understand that the blade indeed curse Shunsui and in the end make im lose is adoptive father and is best friend

Fair, but being exucuted for it its too much

PacoTaco

Thats structure

Solebat

#SundayRundown Pat won the day for "X gonna give it to ya" R.I.P to Lille Barro, little did we know when he showed up that he would be one of the strongest characters ever and would only lose due to plot armor.

I always wondered something. In the sub when Ukitake tells Shunsui about Isuzu's conviction and execution, Shunsui says "No, I'm glad you told me when you did." Do you think he meant that if he had been told before it happened, he would have personally gone and interfered with Central 46, most likely ruining his place in the Gotei 13? Hmmm

Snadow

#SundayRundown First, a reminder that we saw how Shunsui lost his eye. It was shot out at the beginning of this invasion. Second, the way this fight ended was actually really unpopular in the manga. We essentially had a completely unbeatable opponent that Kubo then introduced out of nowhere the concept of ancestral Zanpaktos and Nanao's backstory to justify her suddenly having a power for dealing with almost exclusively this specific foe. It is very narratively unsatisfying.

Masked Void

[Tidbits][Lot of reading for those interested] - There are subtle (and not so subtle) hints that possibly suggest the Shunsui maybe suicidal. The chapters that cover the content regarding Shunsui and Nanao vs Lille is titled "The Theatre Suicide". On the surface it seems to only relate to the play in which his Bankai enacts, however if you listen to what his Zanpaktou spirit is saying it becomes clearer that more is happening. She says "We promised to die together" and when Shunsui was sitting she attempts to get him to go to sleep and leave the rest to her. We must remember that a Zanpaktou is an extension of the user. Additionally when he activates his Bankai all those around feel a sense of Despair and Hopelessness. - We learn here about Shunsui's struggle with death and responsibility, which adds to the sense of tragedy we often feel about his character. Even within this arc it happens again, Yamamoto and Jushiro died leaving him with even greater responsibilities. When you think about his actions, his willingness to do whatever is necessary, it makes much more sense now, for him he has to win because he carries those deaths and responsibilities with him as best as he can. (The concept of him sharing the burden of responsibility instead of taking it on all by himself was impressively expressed through his moment with Nanao) - Many fans often questioned the Nanao ancestral blade concept, feeling that it’s (understandably) overly convenient, and came completely out of the blue. but, as I’ll express again later, Kubo tends to have lore in mind long before it’s revealed. This is why Nanao wasn’t shown in fights, she doesn’t even have a named Zanpaktou and if you recall her moments in the Soul Society arc, she didn’t even carry a blade with her even when the restrictions were lifted (I.e In a story where the strength of the Zanpaktou is primarily how one's strength is judged, it’s obvious that Kubo not showing hers meant something was being set up. It’s more likely that Lille was made in part to delve into this plotline) - Sidenote: Additionally Nanao's last name is “Ise” which is likely in reference the famous Ise Shrine in Japan. It’s a landmark with deep historical and religious importance. - Sidenote 2: It was way back in April of 2007, Chapter 158 that we learn about Shunsui Hairpin and the Kimono from bonus pages in the manga. It’s only of note because many don’t know that Kubo tends to invent characters with tons of lore but he picks and chooses when to reveal it (sometimes he just keeps it tucked claiming “it’s a secret”). The Content covered here happens in chapter 652, a long way away from 158. - Sidenote 3: Many suggest that her familial Zanpaktou would be effective against Yhwach however unlike Lille, Yhwach can see into the future so it's extremely unlikely that she'd be able to use it in anyway that he would prepare for in advance. - Sidenote 4: As mentioned before Lille’s Vollstandig design takes obvious visual elements from Seraphim (Biblical angels that act as God's spokesmen). This sort of second evolution is further proof of it, aside from having 8 wings, Seraphims are also often depicted as serpent-like creatures bathed in fire or red. (This isn’t 1 to 1, Kubo throws his own unique spin on it by using white instead of red and adding an owl-like face) [Reposted]

Dragon Puncher

Is it? She essentially "misplaced" 10 nukes and probably destroyed her family's status as a minor royal house.

iman

Pernida turns out to be the Soul King's literal arm and Lille morphs into a seraphim like archangel, man these transformations are just ridiculous examples of body horror and I'm here for it. Squad Zero really got knocked out before they got to their final forms, really puts it into perspective how much they got slumped. It was handled much better in the anime, but it is still fairly jarring if you think about it. Sadly, that was always gonna be their role. These 2 fights being cases where it felt like they were set up specifically for their counters is certainly interesting, particularly in this episode with Nanao. It was kind of insane reading this at the time because there was a filler episode with Nanao and Kyokotsu, and it turns out there's some connection between them. Shunsui also stating that Katen became pregnant because he needed a place to store Shinken is such a wild thing to casually say. Anyway, some theorise that Shinken was used to cut the Soul King, that isn't wholly consistent with what we've seen it do. It reflects a God's power onto itself and dispersing it into pieces, it doesn't necessarily cut them, though maybe its power was changed a little, perhaps with a new name(wink, ichibei, wink). Who knows really, it's fun to speculate. Oh and before I forget, I recommend you guys watch a trailer for this cour(do the thing, Penguin). They actually spoiled Shunsui's bankai in it, which was insane to do, but as we've made it further than that now so I highly recommend you guys to watch it.

TexasSnyper

I would like to request the Zanpakto Rebellion Arc to be watched while waiting for S4 of TYBW. Please please please please please.

Patrick

Fun fact: All the dual zanpakuto we've seen (Zangetsu after Ichigo reforged it, Katen Kyokotsu, and Sogyo No Kotowari) belong to soul reapers with a little extra in their soul. Ichigo has his Hollow/Soul Reaper powers as the larger blade, and his Quincy powers as the smaller one. Ukitake has Mimihagi attached to him, and Shunsui hid Shinken Hakkyoken within his Zanpakuto.

Meh

I freaking KNEW Pat was going to say that XD! (Died for nothing)

Satori

Link is still asking to pay

Alex M

This is never confirmed but heavily implied: Katen (older spirit) used her eye to create Kyokotsu (the younger spirit) specifically to hide the Ise clan’s Zanpakuto. Although we see Kyokotsu carrying Shinken Hakyokken, it is confirmed that Kyokotsu is NOT the spirit of the sword that belongs to the Ise family.

#SundayRundown #Bleach Just a little lore, back in the day when the manga came out, people generally did not like Lilles death nor his personality change. He became far more of a zealot than when he was in his human form. Once transformed he became a totally different character, still talking about sinners but with far more enthusiasms. People also did not like how Kubo made a character , who is basically immortal and then killed him with some sword that was never once mentioned. Despite this all, the fight was still fun and just showed the sheer power of the quincy, especially those personally blessed by Ywhach. If you think about it, Lille has a reason to be a zealot, he was blessed by Ywhach and reached godhood, as clearly shown by Nanaos sword reflecting his power. Additionally Chris mentioned Lille being a biblically accurate angel, and that for the most part is true. Kubo takes a lot of influence from religions and other cultures, and Lille being a true angel is one of them. They are often depicted as monstrosities with animal like features, hence the owl head. We even get more of this from his trumpet attack. Lille calls himself the divine messenger of god and Gabriel, who he is based off of, is also a the divine messenger of God, he also has a Horn that will herald the end times. It’s just a great tie in with the religious themes and makes Lille a far deeper character. Also loved the music when Lille is powering up his trumpet. The colors and sound design had been amazing.

Kayso

Beautiful backstory with Shunsui and little Nanao. Now we see how he got his kimono. Also love the reveal of Nanao being his niece. Sakura VA voices Nanao if yall didn't notice. She also did Unohana and Karin (Ichigo's sister)

Shinsui has always been my favorite character. Amazing episode.

Bona Fide

I had to comment on this one. I love Shunsui and Nanao's interaction so much because Bleach didnt do weird fan service with making her blush. It was purely family love. No red cheeks or weird interactions. Just like Father-Son kamehameha like you said. I got emotional during this episode again. Fantastic episode and fantastic reaction
