Tony and crew are absolute pieces of shits who will rob and kill anyone including their childhood friends as long as there’s a a profit in it. The ending really signifies this as Tony is intentionally tipping over smaller boats in his way just for his own amusement, it doesn’t matter to him if what he does will ruin everyone else’s time or life just as long as HE’S happy. Subtlety Tony is becoming more like Livia especially with how petty he gets with AJ. David Chase really starts showing the crews dark side in season 3 and onwards and I can’t wait for your reactions

Davey deserves everything he gets in this episode. Its his wife and son who are the victims in all of this. Gambling his sons college money away is a giant piece of shit move. He is lucky Vic stood up to pay for Erics education, even if its not at Georgetown at least he will get a chance to get a degree, no thanks to his father. I 100% agree with Chris here, Tony was childhood friends with this guy, their wives are friends and have coffee mornings and book clubs together and shit and their son and Meadow are friends at school, so this was also a dick move by Tony, but David is an addict and would have eventually found some way to fuck everything up, with or without Tony, I guess. One of the funniest things in this episode is that all throughout you can see Tony and Ritchie's spoils from the store, everyones walking around with picnic coolers, and Artie with his Ramlosa water and they are all unaware that David and his family are the ones paying for it all. Suraj also was spot on with the ending, the symbolism of Tony in his boat overturning that boat in his wake and not even knowing, he is leaving a trail of destruction behind him and doesnt even notice. In terms of Carmela and Vic, look I will never advocate for cheating, especially if you are married, so I am glad it didnt happen between them, but Tony is a serial cheat.....even though two wrongs do not make a right. As soon as Vic spoke to Davey and realised what kind of guy Tony is, there was no way he was going anywhere near Carmela again....it doesnt matter that Tony cheats, he has a medieval outlook, and if he found out anyone touched Carmela sexually they would be whacked without question.....

This episode and the previous episode with Davey is probably my two favorite episodes in the entire series.

There is no bond stronger than the one between Pat and the villains that he adores. Add Tony Soprano to that list. Bust-outs are evil. I don't care care if it's against your childhood friend or a stranger. Preying on people at their worst moments and ruining their lives (and their families) over money that you don't even need is fucked up. Tony's 'business' is doing fine, he doesn't have to ruin Daveys life. Him being Tonys childhood friend only makes it worse. I also think Daveys gambling addiction is being underplayed here. Yes, people with addictions need to be held responsible for their actions, but people who prey on addicts to make money? They're pucchiacs! Imagine if you found out that someone had a drinking problem and you leveraged that drinking problem to squeeze as much money as you could from them, leaving their family in shambles. Now imagine that person being your childhood friend. Tony is evil, but he's funny so I guess that cancels it out.

To add on to this, the donation he gives to Beansie, he doesn't care about being insensitive or how Beansie feels about the situation, he does it just so he himself feels good about it.

Veya

They didn't intentionally tip over the smaller boat. I'm not sure where people are seeing that given the way it was shot.

Darrell Henry

First, Tony told Davey several times to stay away from the game. Davey showed up by himself and then took out more credit when Tony fell asleep. Mind you he was already in debt to Richie. Tony isn’t great but this was mostly on Davey.

Veya

What's complicating it (complicating, not justifying) is that Tony legitimately told him no multiple times. Tony says here he knew he had the business and he retroactively slides it into his worldview but had Davey listened or wised up during one of the times Tony tells him no and just leaves, you think he forces Davey into it? We've seen the show enough now to know you're not supposed to always take what characters say at face value, sometimes yes, other times it gets muddled by other information given.

Veya

The therapy scenes, I'm assuming they're talking talking about the earlier Melfi and Elliot ones, are part of a larger seasonal sub-textual throughline that should become more clear by the time they're at the final stretch of episodes in the season. It's not about where the plot ends up, we know Melfi was always going to go back to seeing Tony. It's adding dimensions to the central idea of the season through a different lens given that her worldview and station in life are so different. Reducing it to pure plot mechanics and a will-they won't they sexual tension is missing a lot in that regard.

Dante Sparda

It’s proper boat etiquette to watch out for other boats when you’re going full speed and they were yelling at Tony and AJ to slow down and they didn’t

Dante Sparda

I genuinely hope they see this comment for Sunday rundown because I know the whole ‘will they won’t they’ is interesting and exciting, but it feels like they are missing a lot of Melfi’s and Tony’s character

Adam Vialpando

He didn't force Davey into it at all, but neither did Davey force Tony into anything either. It annoys me that people use the fact Tony said no at first as a way to justify his actions. He still eventually did it because he knew he could squeeze Davey no matter what. And people tend to forget that Tony knew Davey for years which is why Tony tried to talk him out at first. How many other desperate did they take advantage of without even giving that consideration. If a person is hanging themself you aren't under obligation to help them, but that doesn't mean you should sell them the rope to do it either.

Veya

If you watch it again, they only started yelling for them to slow down when the boat was already too close. Tony and aj’s sightline are significantly higher and nothing in the way it was shot and edited made it look like they did it on pupose. It didn’t even look like they noticed them until after the boat capsized. And yes that’s proper etiquette…but tony is a criminal. They were negligent but nothing in the scene showed they did it on purpose.

Veya

Davey literally tracked Tony down and kept asking again and again to let him in. Of course Davey doesn’t force him, but this goes well beyond a simple “okay well that’s that”. Tony also literally said : “i don’t want to see you get hurt, these guys play deep”. He put the idea that it’s possible to get hurt and Davey knew they were in the mob. Like, at what point does he shoulder some of the blame? Also wasn’t justifying and literally said that in my comment. Was explaining why this particular situation is complicated from a sympathetic standpoint, not from a moral or legal standpoint. Also mild spoiler for later in the season: the idea of sharks and their nature was brought up. Implying a degree of this can be subconscious and not as simplistic as just "well he said this and that's that".

Dante Sparda

Even if that was true, it stills shows that Tony’s actions and his way of life affect people’s life for the worse and it’ll never bother him because he’s happy in the moment because he feels better about himself

Veya

Yeah never suggested otherwise.

Anansi

I agree with you that we can’t always take what people say on this show literally and that’s how I read Tony's fake (fake in my opinion) rejection when Davey asks to play in the game. I think Tony knows that Davey is going to keep asking and saying no a few times gives him a fake moral loophole when he decides to destroy this guys life.

Veya

The thing is he doesn’t seem to view the saying “no” as a fake moral loophole though. He defaults back to calling him an addict in general for deflection but he still acknowledges to davey that he knew he had the store and melfi suggested he’s taking out his anger on a “happy wanderer”. Again, there’s also the subconscious idea brought up later in the season that muddles all of this.

Anansi

What subcouncious idea are you talking about here? You can be vague to avoid spoilers.

TJ

Tony told him no multiple times and he still persisted. Tony being blamed for what another grown ass man does is ridiculous. Davey made his bed and has no one else to blame but himself.

TJ

Except they didn't rob him. He was a grown ass made who made the choice to gamble even after Tony told him no several times.

TJ

Blaming Tony for what another grown ass man CHOSE to do is ridiculous.

Anansi

Tony knew he wouldn’t listen to a few half-hearted no's. He hates that his friend gets to be seen as an upstanding citizen (or happy wanderer, as his convo with Melfi calls it) so Tony deliberately did this to bust out Davy's business (with no care for Davys family). Davy isn’t innocent, nobody says he is, but neither is Tony. Tony is a predator.
