when you guys do your intro and exit fullscreen on crunchy roll you can see the thumbnail for the next episode on the bottom right, I would heavily suggest trying to avoid looking in that corner next week!

Perfection. This season has gone above and beyond.

So, time to go over some of the many reveals and plot twists of this episode. If you don't want to read all of this, the first point is the most important one IMO. 1) So, in this episode we find out AFO stole Tenkos real quirk and gave him a copy and inferior version of a quirk from a child in one of the orphanages that Doctor Ujiko had, this power could only destroy and not restore the damage. To anime watchers, the big detail involved with the reveal will go over their heads and that is this quirk was originally Overhauls.  As AFO explains what he did, we see a child staring at the ground in the dark in one of the orphanages, this would be the first time we would see this shot in the anime. However, in the manga, during the Overhaul Arc we see this shot as Overhaul explains his motivation and philosophy when it comes to quirks. Sadly this shot and his deeper motivations were cut from the anime, probably for time which is sad because personally I think that what he says about quirks gives some hints to how quirks came to be and then spread across the planet. Regardless, for manga readers you're supposed to make the connection between Overhauls backstory and this reveal, but for anime watchers that shot doesn't mean anything because you've never seen it before. I'll keep these reveals brief as I can 2) You may be asking, what was Tenkos original quirk? Well, in the final Fan/Data Book, Horikoshi revealed that his original quirk was the yellow halo quirk that we see Shigaraki and AFO use for propelling themselves this season. This makes sense and was theorized by manga readers because Shigarakis Grandma, Nana, had the quirk Float. 3) The anime is no stranger to cutting out stuff that happens that actually will be setup or important later on, so its not surprising that the anime either intentionally or unintentionally cut out a small hint that AFO gave Tenko the decay quirk. When we see Tenkos backstory during Season 5, they cut out a small panel of Tenko arriving home with a man in a black suit with his face unable to be seen.  Its hard to describe this without seeing it, but this panel is very blink and you'll miss it, so its understandable that it doesn't seem important on the surface. Tenko being given Decay by AFO was a big theory for manga readers after this and wasn't fully confirmed until here.  If I had to guess, the anime staff just didn't know this would be important later on, like with miscoloring Toyas hair to be red instead of white or the Overhauls backstory and motivations, but maybe the reveal works better if you have no idea. 4) Fun fact for the last one, the hero we see volunteer to go help Deku is based on the protangonist from Horikoshis previous manga, Barrage.

I really dug that Shigaraki saw himself as a hero to the villains. The series has been about the power of heroism and that anyone can be a hero to anyone. Even villains can be heroes to other villains. This was an idea that All For One exploited to amass so much of his power base. It’s what he told Spinner right before the Final War. And now we see that deep down, underneath all the hatred, Shigaraki saw himself as a hero. Just like his childhood friends saw him. They saw him as such a hero that he was All Might when they would play hero. That sequence gave Shigaraki even more depth. Especially when we see some people cheer Shigaraki because they felt seen by his struggle. Great stuff. Too bad All For One pulling an “It was me Barry” ruined it 😅 I did like that All For One refers to his goal to take over the world as “hollow” now that Yoichi is gone. He did this all to regain his little brother. He wanted to rule with Yoichi permanently by his side. Now that’s all gone. Because of Midoriya. Now he just has to settle with world domination. How boring. Midoriya is such a little shit. How dare he keep two brothers from reuniting? And he calls himself a hero.

Not only was Shigaraki given Decay, but Decay is actually a modified version of Overhaul. Only with the reconstruction edited out, leaving only the destruction. You can see an image of Young Overhaul in the flashback when All For One talks about the quirk. Shigaraki’s original quirk was the ring repulsion that All For One and Shigaraki used to fly. Only with some additional boosters to increase speed. So Shigaraki’s aerial aerobatics in 8x05 is a taste of what he could have been like. He was born to fly and All For One clipped his wings in order to make him a tool of destruction.

That little guy who summoned a sword from his hand is from another series called Barrage by Horikoshi. And the guy who gave his shirt was the same guy who doubted Deku. The same guy who wanted to kick Deku out of UA in order to save everyone else. Deku promised that the heroes would bring everything back. Now, after seeing everything Deku did, he was motivated to help in any way he could. So he gave his shirt so that a wounded hero could use it.

All for One manipulating and giving Shigaraki his Decay quirk wasn’t surprising, especially since the manga shows the glimpse of a man in a black suit in Shigaraki’s flashback in My Villain arc. I didn’t expect he influenced his father to have Shigaraku. To be honest I am still mixed on that reveal. AFO already manipulated Shigaraki for most of his life. The Shigaraki Orgin story clearly showed us AFO was grooming and manipulating him from the start. I personally didn’t think the AFO needed to be behind his conception. I am supposed to believe the little girl was too old for AFO to manipulate so he needed the father to have another child? To me AFO could just been watching the family from the start and only got involved when Tenko was born. Nothing really changes at all. It t felt like an extra step was unneeded to me. I do feel like Surge to some extent. At the end of the day the dad still chose to be uber strict with him while the rest of the family did nothing to stop him until it was too late. AFO is probably the only character who felt no empathy or sympathy for. He was truly a monster with no redeeming qualities at all. Even his flashback with Yoichi just showed he was terrible brother who only saw his brother as a possession. What makes me both love him as a villain and hate him as a character is AFO doesn’t even have a real motivation for taking over the world. Once he realized Yoichi was gone he sounded hollow and realized he had no reason for doing what he was doing. All he wanted to do was make everyone else’s lives worse so everyone focused their attention on him. He as much of a man child as Shigaraki was. He just hid it so well.

The Greater-Scope Villain

Yes, everything was All For One’s plan. Tenko Shimura/Tomura Shigaraki was a person that AFO himself created (he literally told Kotaro to have another kid ostensibly to give his daughter, Hana, a sibling, though he had considered Hana herself as his vessel beforehand) and manipulated the entire life of, even creating Decay from the child Overhaul’s quirk and giving it to him after stealing his original quirk as a baby. Shigaraki was never anything more than a tool, a reservoir of hatred and a benchwarmer for the all-powerful body that All For One had created for himself to take over one day. That day is today. The main, ultimate villain of this franchise is, and always has been: All For One, not Shigaraki. Bakugo was wrong—All For One is the true Final Boss, The Greatest Villain, and it will take literally EVERYONE in order to stand a chance at fighting him.

Alot of people have already pointed out the Overhaul link, but I wanna point out how deep it goes. First off, Aoyama's Quirk didn't fit him and caused him pain, and Shiggy has a scratching tick whenever his Quirk feels compelled. Secondly, Overhaul's character is defined as an orphan and had a OCD regarding cleanliness and being touched by other's hands, while Shiggy's imagery is full of his dead family's hands grabbing him and dust and decay. And on a more narrative level, Overhaul comes into the story to help Shiggy mature and develop, to become a whole person. He teaches Shiggy the strength of purpose, the idea of a vision of the future, as Overhaul attempts to take over AFO's throne. Overhaul is "the better Shiggy" that Shigaraki has to overcome in order to become "his ideal self".

I don't care what anyone says All For One being behind all the bad things in Shigarakis life is one of the dumbest twists I've ever seen in an anime and completely ruined Shigaraki as a character for me

Phil

This honestly sounds like a nonsensical and very convoluted way of connecting the 2 even though the fact that the same quirk is really dumb
