Tony knew that Jackie Jr had to die if he was going to maintain respect. He put the choice on Ralphie who he’s still angry at for killing the stripper. If Ralphie gave him a pass he’d weaken his standing with the rest of the family. If he killed him Tony gets the credit with family(which was shown when Chris apologized) but none of the blame/guilt with Carmela or Meadow. Tony was willing to let his best friend’s son, a kid he’s known his entire life be murdered to maintain respect.

SergeTroy

To be fair, within that criminal underworld the kid wanted so badly to join, he more than had it coming. Remember that he practically emptied a clip into the dealer, Sunshine, personally and in the corse of a felony. He’d be on death row for any state that still had capital punishment. The mob just got there quicker. But otherwise I agree with your analysis of Tony’s reasoning.

PIG

I’ve been waiting for them to see Michael K Williams for months now. Damn I miss seeing the dude… And now John Ransome…

It’s important to remember that part of the reason why tony and carmela are so lost with aj is because meadow had the same parenting and turned out better. Not only that, but both tony and carmela are aware of how terrible tony’s mom and dad were and from their perspective, they’re doing things differently but these problems are still popping up. Add that to the fact that sincerely talking to aj is going to bring up a whole lot of baggage, especially for tony, and it just compounds on the problem.

Yeah Chris is wrong on this. Tony knew Jackie had to die, but he just didnt want it on his conscience because Jackie Snr and Ro are pretty much family to them, so he put it all on Ralph, knowing that Ralph's ego would not let him give Jackie a pass. Like he said last episode "Who cares about shit people say behind your back?" He knows Ralphie cares, and he knows in the mafia, perception and reputation is everything. The conversations between Tony and Ralph were basically both of them trying to pass the buck to each other....they both knew Jackie had to die. Tony didnt want to give the order for the aforementioned reason, and Ralphie didnt want to do it because he is with Jackie's mom and the kid is essentially his step son. Ralph doesnt "care" about Jackie, just doesnt want the guilt and the grief that would come with having him killed.

Veya

Well tony was willing after his initial impulse was to tell chris “no” about jackie jr. There’s also a level of self-loathing involved because tony got reminded of his own poor treatment of carmela by watching jackie jr cheat on meadow.

PIG

Tony is a complex character, one of those sides being that he’s pretty intelligent despite being undereducated. He always an edge over the other criminals and intelligence is just one of them.

PIG

“If your kid turns out to be a genius, you say, ‘Well, we raised him right.’ If he turns out to be a screw-up, you say, ‘Well, that’s his life.’ -George Carlin. Nature is probably way way more powerful than nurture. Parents pick and choose taking credit for their kids when it’s probably nowhere as important as genetics.

Was Tony referring to Len Bias? The young man was supposed to be Boston's answer to Michael Jordan, and he was set to be the next Larry Bird. Bias could have been a rookie NBA Champion with Bird. But Tony was racist, saying it was crack. It was pure cocaine, and his heart couldn't handle it. Bias is the biggest what-if in sports.

The hour was late and it was dark; I’m sure he had just offered to walk her to her car. True gentleman that Jackie. 😢

Wes

Ralphie is on Tony's "good side" since being made captain. He wasn't trying to undermine Tony by killing Jackie Jr. Tony put the decision in Ralphie's hands, thus absolving Tony of being the one directly involved in having his best friend's kid. Jackie Jr. is not part of the family and committed a cardinal sin by shooting at made men. He had to die based on mob rules and Tony knows that. Like others in the comments said, that whole convo from the previous episode was Tony and Ralphie trying to pass responsibility to the other, but Tony ultimately won.

Wes

Meadow sees the hypocrisy of her father and even her mother, and for the most part abhors the things that Tony does. But she understands the dynamics of being a mobster's child and you can't say certain things in front of outsiders, like what Kelli did in front of her cousin. I think Suraj said she's adapting, which she is. She's falling in line as a lot of people adjacent to the mob do, because even though her father and his associates do horrible things, that's still her dad at the end of the day. Naturally, most of us ride with our family for better or worse.

The chess scene Jackie Jr was the perfect symbolism of his entire arc in this show. He was impatient. Immediately he moves his pawns in an "illegal" way and has to restart and then when he realizes he's going to lose right as the game started (just like his short time as a criminal) he immediately flips the board and storms off (which also mirrors him robbing the card game) and is immediately killed. Michael K. Williams' (RIP) character even says "you should've let that play out, it's the only way your going to learn" and Jacke refuses to listen (just like he did the entire season). Jackie thought he could live a mob life just off his "fawtha"s reputation without any of his dads experiences and when he had probably WAY more opportunities than his father ever did. As for Chris' statement about Tony wanting to give him a pass. Tony literally couldn't give him a pass even if he wanted to. That's one of the reasons he gave it to Ralphie in the first place. It's also Ralphie's fuck up to begin with because he put the idea in Jackies head about robbing the card game and Tony knows it, just like Tony knows Ralphie has been setting Jackie up for failure the entire season (Tony also DESPISES Ralphie and only tolerates him because he the top earning Captain in his crew) So Tony put Ralphie in hard spot where he has to make a call that neither actually want to make (Ralphie was BEGGING Tony to give him the order). Very smart of Tony all things considered.

Erik D

Exactly, Tony knew Jackie had to die. It is also a moral and political cop-out to offload his guilt on Ralphie, knowing of his cruelty.

Javi

It would have to be him but the difference in time is weird lol bias died in the 80s and tony is reading a newspaper in like the year 2001 or so

A L

Normally Chris is spot on with his commentary, but I think he's totally misinterpreted the scene between Tony and Ralphie. Tony absolutely wanted Jackie Jr. killed, but he didn't want it on his hands. He basically told Ralphie it was his mess to clean up.

SergeTroy

For Chris: “You wanted to be in the game. Now you’re in the game.” Levy to Orlando

Wes

I'm sure it was meant to mirror the Len Bias story, but also I think it was to parallel what Jackie Jr.'s was going through in some ways. Jackie wasn't necessarily talented, but he was the boss's kid who had everything handed to him. Christopher even called him the "heir apparent", so I think great things were expected of him just because of who he was.

Sean Carleton

Coming to HBO in 2027, Time Traveling Wise Guys.

I watch while I'm working, so my attention is primarily on work, and I missed that Tony was talking about the current paper. I watched the show as it aired.

Remember a few episodes ago, Carmela guilt-tripped Tony into giving 50 grand to a school. Wasn't this the same school AJ got expelled from after the pool incident? If so, I'd probably send him to a military school anyway.

pinkfairy

Carmela wanted Tony to give 50 grand to Meadow's school Columbia University, not any high school level education school for AJ. Unfortunately, ivy league colleges take large sums of money from rich families in return for some level of protection or support of their kid. That's why Carmela wanted Tony to "donate" some to keep up with the other rich kids.

Jamaal Ellison

Okay thank you for the clarification.
