The hong kong and taiwan situation aren’t the same, hong kong was never a country. It was always a colony of the british empire which is why it has a different government. In 1997 it was handed over to the ccp. Without getting into the nitty gritty, it’s supposed have more autonomy for 50 years but the ccp have enacted tighter control over certain things. But broadly speaking it does legally belong to china. For taiwan, they always had a separate sovereign government. It’s the government in china that fought against the ccp before, somewhat during, and after ww2. Regardless of what the china claims, taiwan in practice is and always has been a separate country. The governments have always been distinct entities and unlike hong kong, wasn’t a colony to a different political entity.

disagree on Taiwan. I don't know where you get your history lessons, but I think you need to re examine what you have learned. If Trump loses the next election and refuses to leave, then US has a Civil War 2, and the "MAGA party" loses and retreats to Florida, claims sovereignty over the whole United States, does that mean Florida becomes "always had a separate sovereign government"? We can say they have a separate government entity, and we can discuss whether they could be independent or not, but historically, Taiwan is part of China. Just like whatever the "MAGA part" will say, Florida is part of US, not "practice is and always has been a separate country". Also if you really want to be be specific, the reason why CPC (Communist Party of China) didn't take over Taiwan when they won the China Civil War? Guess what, It's because good old "American imperialism". “The issue of Taiwan was ignored and the US administration made it clear that it would not defend Taiwan against a communist invasion. So while the US were on the side of the GMD for the civil war, the decision to defend Taiwan with US armed forces only came when China intervened in Korea. This policy was formalized with the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty (annulled in 1978) and the Formosa Resolution (still in force) after the First Taiwan Strait crisis in 1954.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan#Republic_of_China_(1945%E2%80%93present) Also, add some history about "the government in China that fought against the CCP before." Because it sounds like what you are saying is like an invasion. The CCP and KMT used to be separate factions in a United Front: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_United_Front. But after that, the right wing KMT purged and massacred the left-wing part of the KMT and CCP: "On 12 April, many communists within the KMT were purged in Shanghai through hundreds of arrests and executions on the orders of General Bai Chongxi." And because a right-wing “empire” was doomed to fail, this led to the CCP's successful revolution against the KMT. And KMT goes to Taiwan, does the same thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Terror_(Taiwan) "The KMT carried out persecutions against those who criticized or opposed the government, accusing them of attempting to subvert the regime, while dramatically expanding the scope of punishment throughout this period.[7] It made use of the Taiwan Garrison Command (TGC), a secret police, as well as other intelligence units by enacting special criminal laws as tools for the government to purge dissidents.[8] Basic human rights and the right to privacy were disregarded, with mass pervasive monitoring of the people, filings of sham criminal cases against anyone suspected of being a dissident, as well as labelling any individuals who did not conform to a pro-regime stance as being communist spies, often without merit.[9] Others were labeled as Taiwanese separatists and prosecuted for treason.[10] It is estimated that about 3,000 to 4,000 civilians were executed by the government during the White Terror." It's more like a rogue faction of the KMT invaded Taiwan than official ruling. Because most of the remaining KMT government just merged with the CCP after the civil war. This rogue faction got hold of Taiwan, and because America wanted to maintain influence on China, we now have this very often misunderstood place called Taiwan that was seemingly never part of China.

I didn’t bother reading past the first two lines after “Where you got your history lesson”. My family who were part of the kmt? Who would know about this more than most? They are and always have been two distinct political entities. I’m not squabbling over the the current political situation or what labels are being applied. They are literally two different entities that have literally fought each other. So yes, a separate entity even back when they were in china and it’s different than hong kong because hong kong never had independence.

Okay so i did read the rest of your comment and it appears you don’t seem to know what separate entities and “in practice” really entails or are just nitpicking while saying stuff that i already knew. An “alliance” doesn’t happen between two parties that aren’t separate in the first place. So i’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here (it’s also for this reason your US/florida point makes little sense). They warred with each other, so yes, they were still separate. And an alliance broke down later so yes, for all intents and purposes, separate entities. Likewise north and south korea are obviously separate entities, so the idea that “korea was unified in the past” is meaningless in the current landscape for a similar reason. The same goes for the us having roots as an extension of the british empire. So again, “taiwan has always been a part of china”, this seems to be you not understanding what was being said. I said they were distinct two separate entities so i didn’t have to get into the nitty gritty of the history. Saying taiwan has always been apart of china is meaningless in the current political situation, in practice. Nobody cares that it was part of the qing dynasty or the pre civil war landscape. We’re talking about two political entities now that are currently at odds with who should be in charge and again, in practice, are separate entities. I’m also well aware of the atrocities of the kmt in taiwan after they moved there. It’s just immaterial to what we’re talking about in the context of current government not being part of the ccp. And again, china didn’t invade after winning the civil war because of the US. Yeah, duh. Again not material to the current political situation now of two separate and conflicting governments claiming two different things. "This rogue faction got hold of Taiwan, and because America wanted to maintain influence on China". Calling chiang kai shek's part of the party a rogue faction is eyebrow raising to say the least and is usually nationalist dog whistle. "we now have this very often misunderstood place called Taiwan that was seemingly never part of China". This has nothing to do with what I'm saying which just reinforces you didn't understand my point or are simply nitpicking. i even made the distinction to call it "the government in china that fought against the ccp" to make the point that it was part of china. I'm saying "in practice" again, a point you didn't seem to take in, to not get into the discussion about ideology of what's considered china or not because that isn't the main point.

I don't agree on "separate entities" thing. Back in the day, it was one country with two political parties under one KMT-led government, just like American. It's not one country ruled by two separate entities. And the two parties split up because the KMT felt like they wanted a dictatorship, then they went to war, and the CCP won, KMT lost. Some of the KMT higher-ups knew they couldn't remain in power, so instead of surrendering like many other KMT officers did, they ran off to an island, took it by force, and later Americans came to push this "separated country" narrative, and here we are, that's about it. The reason I said about where you got your history from is me trying to be polite. I know there is alternate history being taught, so I also went out of my way to try to include some source. Also ,t his "separated country" theory is a new thing to push independent propaganda and to push young people away from sympathize with China. The way I see it, this alternative history thing is really disgusting, you can recognize the history of being part of China and also want independence. It's like some white supremacist saying America was always a white country, it's not. And this is basically a party telling you not to read and believe written history, only believe the history that aligns with the party's interest, and anyone telling you otherwise is the enemy. My main goal is to prove that Taiwan historically should belong to China, and since the CPC now is the legal ruler of China, it should be considered so. I don't really care if the current government wants Taiwan to be independent or not, my opinion doesn't really matter, I'm not the government, and all I want to do is to correct some history, that's all.

Veya

Your sources were wikipedia. And they don't even dispute anything I've said. Your comment was fundamentally just squabbling over the wording i used and basically ignored the specific fact that i included "IN PRACTICE" to avoid any ideological and labeling discussions which just doesn't really end with nationalists on both sides. That's why it was so annoying. You fundamentally misunderstood the comment. Not to mention you're basically just using ccp dog whistle talking points despite trying to appear otherwise. They are separate entities whether you like it or not. Saying they were one china before doesn't matter. The xihai revolution was in 1911, the kmt was founded in 1919 and the ccp was founded in 1921. We're in 2026. They were separate far longer than they were unified lol. This is why your america/florida comparisons doesn't work on so many levels. There's no alliance there. They were one country for far longer. This is why the two koreas were brought up (which you also ignored). You also didn't address the fact that for any "alliance" to happen, they would need to be separate in the first place. They are again, just separate. Even if anyone wanted one china, there is still dispute over which party would rule it, because again...they are separate entities making those claims. Your history point also doesn't hold up. "historically should"" is meaningless. china went through a ridiculous amounts of territorial and regime changes throughout dynasties. nobody is going to take "china was part of the mongol empire previously so mongolia should rule china as one entity" seriously. If we go further into history, china didn't even include any of the southern portion of the country. You aren't correcting history. You are in fact repeating common ccp dog whistle and propoganda.
