I first discovered François Arnaud in I Killed My Mother, by Xavier Dolan, one of my favorite directors- I highly recommend his films if ya'll haven't seen them. He plays a gay character in that. Loved him in The Borgias. And then, yeah, he played David's ex in Schitt's Creek. He's also openly bi, so, yeah, I was assuming they're was some gay shenanigans involving him the second I saw he was cast. lol

Knowing you guys lol, if you really like Francois (Scott Hunter), you should check out Midnight, TX! 🔥👏🙌🤣😂

#Sundayrundown As an LGBTQ+ Canadian who played hockey up to a semi-decent level, I can unfortunately confirm that hockey is an extremely conservative sport. Even today, it wouldn't be a comfortable situation for an NHL player to come out. The NHL even banned teams from wearing pride-themed equipment and pride nights back in 2023 after some Christian players complained. It was absolutely not any safer in the 2000s/2010s. It's usually not about the public backlash in pro sports; it's about the teams, coaches and the culture behind the scenes. The same thing can be said for Shane. Canada is a very liberal place; the hockey world is not. Also, the socks Scott puts on over the banana socks are actually Kevlar socks. They've been popular with hockey players ever since Erik Karlsson had his Achilles cut by a skate in 2013. There's actually something beautiful to be said that Scott is putting on a whole extra pair of socks just so that he can have Kip with him during the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyfTzunzrUk

#Sundayrundown I wrote several comments under the reaction to the second episode on your website but I want to write it here as well since it might get to more people. It's so refreshing seeing people with media literacy. I usually have to go and defend Ilya's behaviour, thoughts and all that but you guys seem to understand basically everything. I love that. I love Shane but Ilya is one of my favorite characters ever. He is complex, vulnerable and tender at heart, he just has a cocky, dominating outer persona that he uses to protect himself. He has a lot of trauma. I can't wait for you to get into the last 2 episodes and see his emotional development. Ilya in the second half of episode 2, explained: During the figure skating scene in Russia he is often unfairly judged for his behavior. Many misinterpret his actions as cruelty, ignoring that he was desperately trying to maintain safety by setting boundaries. While Shane’s neurodivergence may have made it harder for him to read the room, Ilya’s firm 'not now' "go sit down" and "please go" were a necessary protective measure, not a personal rejection. The tragedy is that Shane pushed until the situation escalated, whereas Ilya showed immediate respect for Shane’s boundaries the moment Shane said 'not here" during the shower scene in episode 1. They talked about not seeing each other in Russia which Shane disrespected and came to Ilya in a very public setting. Ilya lost a game representing his home country, his family was pissed at him and he wasn't allowed to be himself truly... Also, it was known that Russia had spies that would follow especially famous people (such as Rozanov) to find any illegal activities. By not wanting to interact, he was protecting himself as much as Hollander. Side note: Ilya doesn't have a citizenship in USA or Canada. Toxic masculinity is a huge part of ice hockey and there is not a single NHL player who has come out. If Ilya was outed, there is a chance he would be send back to Russia, lose his job and money, probably go to jail or even get killed. This is a big reason of why he is holding back. In the bathroom what is also often misinterpreted as an act of cruelty, actually showcases a nuanced interaction where Ilya's harsh exterior breaks as soon as he realizes Shane is in pain. He is being a jerk but as soon as he sees that Shane is hurting he deliberately softens his voice, makes physical contact and assumes the dominant position to help Shane cope with his out of control emotions. He reassures Shane of his genuine interest in seeing him later that night, passionately kisses him, and wishes him good luck showing Ilya's true affection and concern. Side note: There is a short story by the writer of the book and it showcases what was Ilya doing before going to present the award with Shane in Las Vegas. He was actually having a panic attack in the bathroom, scared of seeing Shane after such a long time. In the penthouse a lot of people mistakenly believe that their dom/sub dynamic inherently means that Shane is being manipulated or coerced. This couldn't be farther from the truth. A clear illustration of Shane's enjoyment is seen when Shane asks, Ilya 'Are you going to fuck me?' and Ilya responds, 'We will see". The distinct smile that appears on Shane's face at that moment highlights his genuine enjoyment of their dynamic. For Shane, Ilya's dominance offers a much-needed release, allowing him to finally let go of control in his otherwise highly structured world, while for Ilya, the dynamic provides a sense of order amidst a chaotic environment. It is a mutual beneficial relationship. Ilya would never try and force Shane to do anything he didn't want to do. We've already seen throughout the series how important consent is to Ilya. I love the way Shane tries to talk to Ilya about Russia and all that at the end of episode 2. He wants to know more but he is just too awkward to bring up the topic in a way that wouldn't scare Ilya. They don't know each other well enough and Ilya doesn't open up to anyone. People hate him or laugh with him which makes them stop from asking questions. But Shane is different and it frightens Ilya. The way he says "What difference does it make?" gives me the idea that he never actually thought about not going to Russia and his stupid family because that's just how he's lived his whole life. Play hockey, make money, go to the country where you hated for the whole summer... The thought of "Maybe I don't need to go there. Maybe I can choose myself and my happiness for once." never really crossed his mind. He is just not ready to talk about his feelings and again, pushes Shane away. He knows that he can't have him and it's killing him. I'm sorry. This is long, lmao. I've seen this show 24 times and I'm hyper-aware of literally everything. Sometimes, it's a curse to be super analytical about every piece of media. I can't wait for you to get into the last 2 episodes and see his emotional development. Lots of love from the Czech Republic!
