Oh damn, I did not expect this match to be one of the ones watched. I loved this match

They make a mistake & comeback early with a BANGER!!! Another reason why The Normies are GOATED🐐🐐🐐🙌🏾🫡 So Bryan Danielson, vegan since ‘09 & husband to Brie Bella (him & Cena were practically brother-in-laws when Cena was dating Nikki Bella & their reality show with the 4 of them, Total Bellas was hilarious) last match was April ‘15 & he officially retired when WWE doctors said they couldn’t clear him & his neck injuries in Feb ‘16. No one thought he’d wrestle again, but after exactly 3 years of not competing, he kept getting opinions from dif doctors & was cleared April ‘18. The storyline behind this match was the guy 12 years younger had studied Bryan forever as an inspiration. They both played to each other’s weaknesses (elbow for Will, neck for Bryan) throughout the match. This “worked injury” ending was needed because the heel (Ospreay) showed he had compassion by retiring the Tiger Driver ‘91 after it “nearly killed Bryan”. Don Callis started to believe Will was getting soft making a decision like that, which led to Will leaving The Don Callis family 3 months after this match. As for Bryan, he returned 20 days after this & ended up having 20 more matches & retired in Oct ‘24

Bryan Danielson's injury was not real. He does have neck issues, but nobody was actually hurt in this match.

The ending was very much the script (the biggest hint is if the camera lingers on the “injured” person, it’s almost certainly part of the story). Danielson has had a history of injuries and even had to retire for several years, but the lead in to this match was Ospreay (the bad guy) starting to feel guilty for hurting people with his Tiger Driver (the one where he drops Danielson on his neck - this is a move that was legitimately banned in some promotions at times). The finish of this match played into that, with Ospreay hitting the Tiger Driver, not seeing that the ref was calling for the doctor, and hitting a further finishing move (another thing that they would not have allowed if a real injury was suspected). Ospreay’s arc continued from this, with him later turning Babyface This is one of my favourite matches ever. Ospreay was probably the best wrestler in the world at this point, and Danielson is one of the greatest ever

Naw the injury wasnt real, Bryan danielson just famously has head neck and concussion issues that have even forced him into retirement in years pass and him being such a loveable asshole, to his fans he uses that in his matches because all his fans wince when he is dropped on his head/ neck, it also was apart of ospreays story of using the tiger driver and hurting people

#SundayRundown Commentator Nigel McGuinness has had a rivalry with Bryan Danielson for over 20 years. They faced each other 25 times from 2005-2009 mostly in Ring of Honor. Sadly Nigel's career was cut short due to health issues & he wasn't able to make it on a big national level like Bryan. In 2023 AEW began laying the groundwork for a Nigel comeback & possibly revived feud with Danielson. At AEW All In London 2024 Nigel made a surprise return to the ring for the first time in nearly 13 years. The next month on Dynamite he faced Danielson on almost exactly 15 years to the date from their last match. He lost to Danielson but it was amazing to see them compete against each other once again.

We definitely need more Ospreay match reactions! I can only imagine the reaction to the steel cage match with him and Fletcher 😂

Now that you've been told the ending was scripted, let's talk about how BRILLIANT that ending was Because when Ospreay hit that Tiger Driver, he IMMEDIATELY spins around to hype himself up for the final Hidden Blade. At no point did he see Danielson spasming, and he never saw the ref checking on him because the ref leaves to call for the doc right before Ospreay turns back around. As far as Ospreay was concerned, he hit the Tiger Driver, turned around, Danielson got up to his knees and he hit the hidden blade, and the ref also had HIS back turned so he didn't see Ospreay getting ready to hit the move. Such perfect timing Also, people going into this match were annoyed it was just a match about "who's better," more or less just a friendly exhibition, but the fact is that's what this ending needed. We needed them to have zero animosity between them, because storyline wise that was needed for Ospreay's internal conflict in the months following this match. He never meant to seriously hurt Danielson, but he did, and now he has to get through that

HalGLC

That's the thing, I was worried that Fletcher would "poison" them against Ospreay lol

What an absolute dream match! This was a stop in the epic last year of Danielson. Hope you can watch his main event match vs Swerve Strickland at ALL IN 2024. Peak emotion!

#SundayRundown I prefer when WWE reigned Bryan in and saved him from himself (seriously, I'm surprised he wasn't killed in the ring), but he had some bangers in AEW. Nothing as memorable as the "YES Movement," but fun stuff, especially the Kenny Omega and Hangman Page matches (Bryan's best AEW work).

*A bit of background* Brian Danielson/Daniel Bryan is a phenomenal wrestler with a crazy career. He was in super-high-rated matches 20 years ago in Ring of Honor, one of which was against then ROH Champion Nigel McGuiness(the English commentator for this match!) There is a TON of fantastic RoH material, their vibe is a little AEW but more indie, they were the gold standard indie promotion in the US for yearrrrs. You would recognize SO MANY current big names that either got their start or at least spent some time wrestling in RoH or training in their school. Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Daniel Bryan, Kurt Angle, Big Show, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry, Damian Priest, Penta, the Hardy Boyz, and probably others I've forgotten.

**Recommendation:** CM Punk was recruited from RoH. He and Samoa Joe(who you've seen once or twice now I think) had a three-match series in 2004 that was fantastic. One of those matches was one of the very few US wrestling matches to get a 5 Star Rating from the Wrestling Observer in that era, and put both of them on the path to "the big leagues". Punk's only other two 5* matches were vs John Cena in MITB 2011 and 2024 in his Hell in a Cell match against Drew McIntyre. Joe has four 5* matches, one against AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels in TNA in 2005 and another three weeks later in ROH against Kenta Kobashi, whose finisher CM Punk eventually "borrowed". Joe then didn't have another 5* match until Double or Nothing 2025, also 20 years after his last one. Will Ospreay? He has at least a dozen 5*(or higher!) matches, quite a few of which were in Japan, but plenty in AEW as well. It was a huge deal when he came back to the US to wrestle for AEW. Kenny Omega was his opponent in some of those, and he holds the highest rating for a match by the WO ever. The 4 highest rated matches of all time were all between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada

Navi mentioning Dynasty Warriors at the start of the uncut popped me. What a fucking game, 3 was a huge part of my childhood lmao

Shockzz1234

Just in case you didn't know, they've done Punk vs Drew HIAC already! Just look for their Punk vs Drew series! The rest are very good recs!
