#SundayRundown I love Little Carmine as a character. He's adding a lot of color to the show in just these couple of scenes: "He's an old-fashioned guy, pop. Very allegorical" & "maybe that's the sticking post".

The New York family has no say or authority over the Jersey Family. They are two completely separate organizations. They occasionally go in together as partners on some business ventures such as the esplanade. The Lupertazzi Family is trying to bully the Soprano Family into giving them a much bigger cut of the profits of the esplanade. Why? Because they are assholes and they can. The New York family is a much larger and more powerful organization than the Jersey Family. Carmine even states that he thinks of Jersey as a glorified crew; that's how much larger and more powerful his family is compared to theirs. Carmine already bullied Tony into giving him a cut of the money he made off of flipping the properties earlier on in the season (after Pauly told Johnny Sack), which New York had absolutely nothing to do with. He's trying to do the same thing with the esplanade. Tony refuses and is trying to hold the line. Johnny Sack is trying to use this conflict as an excuse to get rid of Carmine so he can be boss.

So I'm gathering Carmela is jealous of Meadow for being able to live the life Carmela wished she could live. She could walk out that door, but she'd have to leave everything behind and start over completely fresh.

A lot of interpersonal and parental parallels in this episode. In addition to the ones you guys pointed out, there was also meadow and carmine jr., both were shown thriving when away from their parents, but both started falling back into bratty modes of communication once they’re back in this environment (even if meadow was provoked). Then there’s tony and aj, who both share a similar type of obliviousness, except tony is slightly more perceptive and inquisitive, likely because of therapy. He’s constantly on the edge of realization but always falls short, even when melfi tries to push him. And then as a contrast to all of the family interactions in the episode, tony and meadow show a more pure relationship, where even if there is some disconnect, there wasn’t any malice, jealously, or anger seeping through, which just makes tony say all the wrong things to carmela.

#SundayRundown Such a satisfying payoff here after all these episodes of Paulie talking to Johnny behind Tony's back. Carmine has no clue who Paulie is except thinking (falsely) he's some guy whose Dad was run over by a trolley. It's a pretty great episode for his character. Silvio has him dead to rights during their discussion. Paulie is too stubborn & frankly a little too stupid to admit that's the case. He then bungles his way through a robbery (seriously you were at the hospital you knew that her car was in an accident) leading to a murder. All so he can cling to his tiny, bottom rung on the ladder. This is all there is for him.

#SundayRundown Paulie stands out as especially evil, even by mob standards. And I see him as a liability more than an asset. Furio was a Mr. Eko situation; they had to write him out because he wanted to work on other projects. Speaking of Lost, congratulations to Suraj for not immediately bringing up Eloise Hawking, lab rats, or Daniel Faraday. I'm not sure I could have done the same.

Not only is she jealous of meadow, she’s more on aj’s wavelength when it comes to literature lol. Remember she looks over his paper and that seems to be part of the reason why she was so miffed about his grade. It puts a wrinkle on the women are more aware and the men are just oblivious divide.

Jamaal Ellison

Damn that's great catch. No wonder she was annoyed.

#SundayRundown It's possible Carmella lost it over the subtext of Billy Budd since subconsciously she was associating Furio with the character. She placed him in the pure & innocent role with Tony being a stand-in for his antagonist John Claggart. In the book Claggart is described as "naturally depraved" & having an "elemental evil in him". Meadow's analysis ruined the fantasy in Carmella"s mind & clouded things for her. It was that much more antagonizing since Furio was gone now & the fantasy was all she had left.
