Boardwalk Empire has to be next

One thing that stood out to me in this episode is how closely it echoes Cersei Lannister’s line about power/ruling being like “lying on a bed of weeds, ripping them out one by one, before they strangle you in your sleep”. Curious to know if the line was inspired by shows like this. Tony’s grip on the family depends on always being the alpha in the room. His authority isn’t sustained by loyalty alone, but by the perception that he’s the strongest (and smartest) person in the room. Which ties back to Sil’s criticism of Tony’s pride and ego, which he dismisses saying Sil doesn’t know what it’s like to be number 1. Even though Sil’s feedback come from a good place, I’m afraid Tony is right: every decision he makes ripples through the entire organization. Even when it means standing on bullshit decisions like this one of trying to 'protect' Tony B. The burden of maintaining power ends up isolating him from the very people he’s supposed to lead.

I'm 100% down with Mad Men replacing The Sopranos, and it'd especially be appropriate because the creator and showrunner of Mad Men, Matthew Weiner, was one of the main writers for The Sopranos. Plus, it features the brilliant Elisabeth Moss and the gorgeous Christina Hendricks - what more could you want? ❤️

Tony DID come back like the bear, also a major sopranos theory is that tony was the one who orchestrated the pills and money that tony b found in order to give him a taste of the life he had before and get him addicted to the life and he felt really guilty about killing him because of that

PIG

It will probably be a vote, but Mad Men has to be on that poll. One of the major writers of Sopranos created it and it's just as good as The Sopranos.

Avery! 🦆

I second this! Elisabeth Moss at her best

Boardwalk or Mad Men would be great replacements for Sopranos. I just hope you guys watch the Godfather trilogy before you get too deep into season 6

mbdd

#sundayrundown watch the godfather.

So the frame rate slow down at the end had a purpose. Watch again. You’re suppose to think. “Is that the bear”? Because all you see is black and the slow frame rate of Tony’s coat. Then it’s revealed to be Tony. Sopranos is a show that’s soooo much better on rewatch. The show becomes this whole other thing. Season 6 is…I think it’s one of the finest pieces of American art. Especially the last 9(which is technically season 7 but that’s a whole other thing).:

He was miscast. I love Buscemi but at no point do I buy him as a top guy to be afraid of. And you look at the real Nucky Johnson (who Nucky Thompson is based off of) and he looks like James Gandolfini. Seriously. I’m not saying JG should’ve played him but Buscemi looks like a breadstick in a bow tie. He has no screen presence as Nucky. He’s surrounded by more interesting characters. Terry Winter who created Boardwalk and was a writer on Sopranos needs someone like David Chase to rein him in. I love Tommy guns and action like the next guy but so much of it on Boardwalk is just random redshirts so it means nothing. Boardwalk is an ok show. A soft 7/10. Season 2 is good. Season 3 is like a cartoon. But it’s the one time Buscemi just isn’t right for the role. It needed a capital A alpha male type and Buscemi, all due respect, ain’t that. All due respect. Cause I love the guy and it pains me to say. What I hope they watch next? They’ve seen “the wire” by David Simon. Finishing up Sopranos by David Chase. Complete the HBO David trilogy and watch Deadwood created by David Milch. It’s 3 season and a movie. Some of the greatest dialogue ever written is in that show. Mad Men is a great show. One of the best. But it’s not the greatest for reactions.

Stan the Man

I said this in a reply to another comment but you gotta complete the HBO “David” trilogy. You’ve seen The Wire by David Simon. Sopranos by David Chase. Finally there’s Deadwood by David Milch. 3 seasons and a movie of some of the finest writing and dialogue ever written. I guess there’s also Larry David with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Weird that the dudes who wrote some of the best tv of all time all have “David” in the name.

Stan the Man

Do they take breaks between seasons? I was all pumped for the start of season 6 next week

Hank Scorpio

Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire would be perfect replacements for this show

Hank Scorpio

Deadwood is a very underrated show

The Normies

even if the line wasn't inspired by the show, the similarities are interesting about conversations surrounding power!!

Oof, while I absolute adore Mad Men and rate it as one of my favourite shows ever, I wonder how it translates as a 'reaction'-show? The slow pace, even though I loved it, could make it less suitable.. What do you think? Boardwalk Empire would be better, in my view!

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Point taken, but two things: first, LM Reactions (a YouTube channel with about one-third the number of subscribers as the Normies) reacted to Mad Men recently, and they averaged 15k to 18k views per episode. Secondly, I'm a huge fan of Boardwalk Empire but based on a few comments made during The Sopranos reactions, I get the feeling that at least a couple of the Normies have already seen BE. Either one would a be a great choice though, it's a win-win situation if it comes down to BE or MM.

#sundayrundown Watch Deadwood! It's the last of HBO's "holy trinity", and with the movie coming out a few years back, the story has been concluded (as best it could) following the cancellation all those years back. It is therefore also (unfortunately) shorter than The Wire and The Sopranos - 3seasonsandamovie. Also, it is PEAK reaction content! You will not be disappointed.

Joe Lazarus

I hope you consider reacting to these after The Sopranos... "Dexter", "Ozark", or "Boardwalk Empire"

Manny

Definitely should do Boardwalk Empire

Kwame James

Let's go broadwalk empire

SunnydaleClassof99

#SundayRundown I'd love for you to go Person of Interest after this. For it's genre, it's among the top in the last 25 years. I know it would get slaughtered in a poll. So the more pragmatic choice is Deadwood. It's an amazing show & genre that's underrepresented on the channel

SunnydaleClassof99

#SundayRundown Tony definitely heard the crew talking (especially Vito) before he walked into Ray's party. He was being stubborn & prideful about his cousin. If he'd given him up right away though he still would have heard whispers behind his back, they just would've been about him being a pushover for NY. Him commiserating with John isn't the first time he's talked about how much being the boss sucks. Tony likes the power but I think he could've been content being second to Jackie in perpetuity.

Veya

the conversation that silvio has with tony and the therapy scene with melfi is key to understanding one of the overarching ideas of the season. tony says to silvio that being on top means he's alone with all of his decisions and he later tells melfi that he made all of the wrong choices, which in the immediate sense is obviously about tony b, but in the grander sense is about how he chose to be in the mob. his line to johnny about how he's paid enough can also echoes this. this is the season that delved the deepest into tony's past and mindset and in addition to having to deal with adriana and tony b, he's become the most cognizant of the fact that in part, he made his own bed, even if his parents helped him there. also, i'm pretty it's been pointed out before, the picture on the wall at the club is not john dillinger, it's frank sinatra.

Hank Scorpio

No they usually just get right into it

Hank Scorpio

I agree. If I had to pick between the 2 to replace Sopranos it would be Boardwalk. But MadMen would be good as well.

Paul T Hewes

it annoyed me how they talked over that. HE WAS THE BEAR THE WHOLE TIME!

Jesse

Boardwalk Empire and Deadwood are both great shows though Deadwood is on the Mount Rushmore of HBO shows.
