I’m not mentally prepared to rewatch this, but I will cause it’s you guys 🙃

Sonicluis

I think you guys overlook the fact the Jace did make it away and they were up high. But she sheepstealer started attacking beala Jace had to fly down to save her.

mbdd

#sundayrundown team black still has 3 heirs Joffery Velaryon (last strong boy), then Aegon and Viserys Daemon and Rhaenyra's 2 children.

SSJ VEGITO

Chyle this one had me absolutely SCREAMING at the damn TV! 😱🤦‍♂️😦💀😤🤬🤣

SSJ VEGITO

I'm utterly exhausted after having just finished this episode 😵 And damn near HOARSE from HOLLERIN at this damn TV (as if the actors can hear me lmao 🤦‍♂️🤣). Idk how this was ep ONE with all THAT goin on!!! And we're supposed to endure an entire SEASON of this!? ✌️💀🪦😂

#SundayRundown You guys are wrong, first off Rhaenrya was being stupid and naive to think Alicent had any power to do anything she promised in the last season, she was also stupid to question Jace when all he has tried to do was keep her safe this whole time. You guys are also wrong that his plan failed because it actually was working, him and Baela were working perfect as partners, having each other's backs, getting each other out of tight situations and taking care of the fleet, the problem was SHEEPSTEALER swooping in and fucking everything up. Jace swooping down to save Baela who was being hunted by Sheepstealer, but then quickly realizing it was Rhaena and being too caught up in trying not to fight her, allowed for him to take his eyes off of the fleet for literally a second and be shot down, but you can't necessarily blame him for that, that blame falls on Rhaena for taking a wild dragon she only rode on once and barely listens to her into the first battle she saw.

Zach Hershman

The 3 boys are direct heirs. Baela and Rhaena are also distant heirs through Daemon's claim. Either of them being named queen would require Rhaenyra and all of her kids to die, though. It would also require Team Black to win this war. That would leave Daemon and his 2 daughters as next in line.

Namikaza

Yeah, I'm sorry but I would think Rhaenyra is crazy too. Why in the world would you trust anything Alicent says. We know she was sincere, but Rhaenyra and her allies have no reason to trust anything this woman says.

TsukishimaGlazer

Damn you guys switched up on Chris? Happy fathers day

Zach Hershman

But Alicent did do most of what she had promised. She sent that letter to Ormund Hightower out which kept his 15,000 soldiers away from King's Landing. She also got Aemond to go back to Harrenhall, so he won't be an issue. The only things she got wrong were that she didn't know about the Triarchy fleet that was coming, and she had no way of knowing that Aegon would flee (but he's currently in the process of being delivered to Dragonstone). The Triarchy trap was going to happen no matter what. Rhaenyra being there on Syrax, a much bigger dragon, would have made the grapnel that killed Vermax fairly innocuous. Syrax would have to be hit with at least 2 or 3 of them to take her down. Rhaenyra being there on Syrax could have easily changed how that battle played out. Well, at least until Sheepstealer showed up.

Zach Hershman

Jace did originally make it away, but Corlys was counting on them to continue attacking and burning the fleet. It's quite possible he would have met a similar end while trying to burn another ship.

Duffy the Nar Slayer

This is a pointless argument. They're to woke to understand that Jace locking Rhaenrya up had nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman and everything to do with the fact that she is the leader of their army and campaign. If she dies that's it, they lose. Yes, there are people on her council that ignore her cause she is a woman. Jace wasn't one of them. To put it bluntly, Rhaenrya is just a bad leader who makes bad decisions. She has a chip on her shoulders and tries way too hard to overcompensate for the fact that she is a woman. You can't go to the frontlines and 1v365 an armada of ships. Visery's was a man, did you ever see him on the frontlines; no. Otto even stopped him from going himself to talk to Daemon when he seized Dragonstone back in season 1. Look what happened to Aegon last season when he against his Council flew to the frontlines to fight. It was stupid then, it's stupid now. Regardless of whether you're a man or a woman.

Ashleep

Happy Belated Father's Day, Chris!

The problem though is that everything she did can easily be overturned by Aemond, once he figures out what's going on, and plus Aegon is quite literally gone and this whole "peaceful Surender" hinges on the fact that Aegon was still supposed to be there so Rhaenrya could swiftly kill the opposition, with him gone she can't do that and while she will hold the seat, the bloodshed will still continue. They just merely shifted locations, Which is what I mean by Alicent has no power, because decisions like sneaking Aegon away will always be made unbeknownst to her, because no one cares enough about her opinion to let her in on these plans. Also I think you are severely overestimating Rhaenrya and Syrax's experience in fighting, because up until this point, they shouldn't have any experience fighting. Viserys oversaw many years of peace and prosperity, Rhaenrya and Syrax have never had to fight a day in their lives and was never trained to. Does she have many more years on Jace when it comes to simply being a dragon rider? Yes. But flying through the skies on nice peaceful days with not a care in the world is completely different than flying and outmaneuvering battlefields and flying arrows and harpoons coming at you, and in that regard Rhaenrya and Syrax are just as green and inexperienced as Jace and Vermax, Rhaenrya was literally just complaining about this last season, about how her father never let her train for battle. Also I think you are overestimating Syrax's size because from what I've seen (and this a previous complaint of mine about the show) Syrax looks to be about the same size as Vermax, Moondancer and now Sheepstealer, so I believe those Harpoons can easily bring her down.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

SO......... How y'all think Rhaena is going to go about explaining this bullshit to Daemon and Rhaenrya???!!!!!

HouseDogget

#SundayRundown The thing is that they were ready. Jaycee and Bayla have as much battle experience as his mom and they worked very well together. They were handling the battle very well untill Sheepstealer entered. They could have saved the fleet untill a wild dragon killed everyone. Also all the hate I see Jaycee getting can very easy applied to Raynera. And if she had died in her first battle by an outside army, it would have plummited the moral. Its also important to note that Raynera and Jace have completely different goals for the kingdom that everyone else because they're following Aegons dream of the threat from the north. So a full assault around the kingdom that kills millions of people is exactly what they don't want.

Did y’all really say he didn’t try to save the dragon? There’s nothing he could have done! The first time the dragon got hit it was on the strap thing it didn’t penetrate the dragon. That second hit the dragon was done. Jace potentially saved his mom by doing that no matter how dumb it was. Jace was distracted by raenas rogue dragon, she tragically has a ton of blame for his death. He was down low bc he was evading sheepstealer. If your placing blame a ton of it goes to sheepstealer. Sheepstealer was already heading towards the battle before she said go. No matter what she said the dragon wasn’t listening. The episode was absolutely phenomenal! A 30 minute battle on the “drink” was badass. The visuals the score the acting all top notch. Felt like a movie.

SnakeYikes

"They're to woke to understand that Jace locking Rhaenrya up had nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman and everything to do with the fact that she is the leader of their army and campaign." Brother the literal plot point was Rhaenyra being upset that even her Son and Queensguard overpower her and disobey her rules even though she is the queen. Viserys wasnt on the frontlines because he was a fucking pacifist in a time of peace, there was no war and he was a frail broken man.

#SundayRundown I am a little surprised by some of your comments in this episode aimed at Jace. Rhaenyra has been sounding like a crazy person advocating that she be let out to fight when everyone has been telling her that she alone is holding up their claim. The entire claim of Team Black stems from the fact that the Lords of Westeros swore fealty to HER. Daemon, Jace etc. are all expendable. She has 5 sons, she can afford to lose sons. She can afford to lose Daemon whose claim is now far behind many others. But if she dies, it is exile or death for everyone in Team Black. She doesnt help her case by then suggesting they march into Kings Landing because Alicent will keep the gates open for her, whatever that means. Regardless of what she may feel, Rhaenyra has not been trained to fight. Definitely not in the books and not even in the show. Daemon gets to go fight because he is a war veteran and Caraxes has seen multiple wars. Jace has been trained to fight since childhood. This is all there in the show, in the first season. Also, Jace wasnt flying above the water for a leisurely time. He was literally saving Baela from Sheepstealer. The bolt came out of nowhere. He cant pull a harpoon out a dragon while flying. The harpoon is literally designed to be stuck in flesh. Even if he did, the dragon was dead as soon as it was hit. I am also not sure if it is fair to accuse him of misogyny when his first act after locking up Rhaenyra was to ask his wife Baela (who in the books has actually trained since childhood for combat) to join him in the fight.

#SundayRundown This episode is a great example of what happens when you move away from the source material just for the sake of it. It makes all the characters look and sound stupid. Show Alicent is now willing to let both her sons die (which is just insane to me) to hand over the throne to Rhaenyra, and she is doing increasingly crazy things to try to make this happen. In the books Alicent is firmly Team Green. Show Rhaenyra wants to be warrior queen and go fight on the frontlines. So to give her a reason to stay inside (since she didnt actually fight this battle), the show has to do stupid things like lock her up in her room and make Jace and the Queensguard look like idiots. In Books Rhaenyra is content to lead from Dragonstone. Show Jace looks like an amateur the way he died. In the books Jace was trying to save his youngest brother in the sea battle that the Triarchy had gotten their hands on, and dies heroically. But they need a way for him to die in the show, while Team Green has no dragons out in this war. So they send Show Rhaena riding a barely tamed dragon into war (this doesnt happen in the books). They've simultaneously destroyed the characters of both Jace and Rhaena, for what reason I'm not sure. These are just some examples of how silly the story is getting, just from this episode. GRRM is a great writer who spent decades thinking up the plot of his books. The unnecessary changes by inferior writers is leading to some shoddy storytelling.

Trae Young Supremacist

no to be rude but you are calling nyra dumb but your ideas are worse than hers. jace would die the second he went into battle last season due to lack of experience and dragon size. he kept wanting to go out on his own and nyra told him no, rightfully so. also no his and baela plan wasnt necesarily working because we never saw the plan to completion, you are just guessing what the outcome would be when it is unknown now. one of them could have been shot down regardless. also this is GAME OF THRONES UNIVERSE you dont need major power to backstab and betray someone what are we even talking about? had aegon not left, alcients betrayal of her family could have happened.

Duffy the Nar Slayer

Everyone agrees that both Rhaenrya and Jace are inexperienced when it comes to battle. Don't think anyone watching was expecting Jace to really come back victorious after he decided to defy Rhaenrya's orders and join the battle. Whether he completed his plan or not, he achieved one of his goals, which was to protect his mother. It's unfortunate that he died, but his death is less of a blow and set back to their side than Rhaenrya's would have been.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Okay first off, I literally didn't present any ideas so Idk what you're talking about. Second Rhaenrya could also die the second she goes into battle due to lack of experience and dragon size (Syrax is not that big), that's why when she wanted to go into battle last season, people kept telling her no, rightfully so. Thirdly, just because we never saw the completion of the plan doesn't mean we can't say that while the plan was going it was working, because it literally was working until Sheepstealer. Lastly, you can't accuse me of guessing what an outcome would be when it is unknown, and then turn around and do the exact same thing by saying "had Aegon not left, Alicent's plan could have happened". Because we also don't know what that outcome would be and you are just guessing.

😩 Now usually I’m with Marketa on a LOT of things throughout a LOT of media, but I gotta say how much her (and an uncomfortable amount of other people from what I’ve seen) dislike/confusion/misunderstanding of Jace’s character and his actions frustrate the hell outta me 😂. He’s the oldest/first born child and Rhaenyra isn’t just his queen, she was his mother first! As an oldest son myself, NO first born son is about to sit around and let anything happen to his mother if he has the power to potentially stop it; None lol. AFTER losing his little and closest brother, mind you! 😂 Sheepstealer was the only problem here, not Jace. Like, How is this not obvious at this point?? 😂😂

Billy Blanco

I'll defend Jace briefly as, yes he did go and get himself killed, but all of last season he had been offering to join the war effort to help and was constantly being sidelined by Rhaenyra. I can understand that he would be extremely frustrated with that. Also I don't know how you expected him to save Vermax, how's he gonna cut through the rope attached to an anchor that's already sinking. He's a teenage boy not a superhuman 😂.

christopher

Last season we saw what happened when a ruler went to war

100%! In an AKotSK comment, I pointed out the difference between the changes being made in both shows. AKotSK makes adjustments while still connecting the dots George left in the source material, keeping the themes, characters, and story intact while adding connective "tissue" and the result speaks for itself. With HotD, that's even more important because the source material is... a little bare bones for this medium. There are already very few dots to connect. The problem is that Ryan Condal and Sara Hess often seem to ignore those dots entirely and replace them with their own ideas, then handwave criticism as budgetary constraints, production realities, or audiences not understanding the themes, characters, or how the industry works. That's the fundamental difference lf why this show gets so much hate or criticism, and a big part of why George is heavily involved in one adaptation while being completely detached from the other, now.

Zach Hershman

Syrax may look to be of a similar size in the "chest" as Vermax, but Syrax is MUCH longer and has a MUCH wider wingspan. I know Rhaenyra and Syrax are just as green in battles as Jace and Vermax, but that's where Syrax's wingspan and long, slender frame would come in handy. Syrax was bred to be agile and fast. She is even able to keep up with Caraxes in races. Her speed and agility would have made it much more difficult for them to hit her with the first grapnel. Syrax is also quicker than Sheepstealer, so she could simply outrun him when he showed up.

PurportedGrey

Well, this episode did exactly what I was expecting. It had the series' highest highs and lowest lows, personally. I loved the action and the battle (for the most part). It's not remotely close to Helm's Deep, no matter how much Condal wants to compare it, but it was still a genuinely great battle, both visually and emotionally (minus the Sheepstealer change and Lohar's actress being a bit cringey in places). I also enjoyed Ormund's introduction, Corlys/Alyn, Roddy the Ruin, and the Dragonseeds conversation on the Isle. But holy shit, they are truncating storylines, skipping important moments like Jason Lannister's death, and writing some incredibly contrived plot developments. (Another accident or misunderstanding, anyone?😂) Rhaenyra was probably my favorite character in Season 1, but now she's approaching Season 7-8 GoT levels of stupidity. So many of her decisions no longer feel organic or consistent with either her S1 characterization or the situation she's in. I've been rolling my eyes at nearly every Rhaenyra scene since that absurd Sept infiltration in Season 2. That said, I'm not ready to write the show off even with my criticism and nitpicking. I'm interested to see how they handle the major moments still to come because they're some of the best material in Fire & Blood. My main concern though moving forward, is that these changes are starting to create the same kind of fractures GoT suffered from. At some point, changing one thing means changing five more things to make it work, and the cracks start to show. I also think making Alicent and Rhaenyra the same age and childhood best friends is starting to show it's weaknesses. It worked in Season 1, but it's completely pulled Alicent away from her role in F&B. Instead of being the ruthless matriarch and driving force behind the Greens (besides Otto), she often feels like a bystander, which is a problem when her defining trait should be an almost fanatical determination to protect her children and their claim and not easily flip and throw them to the wolves... or dragons in this case.

PurportedGrey

Also, Zach, along with the growth you mentioned, dragons develop thicker scales as they age, which act as natural armor. Syrax isn't nearly as heavily armored as a dragon like Vermithor or some of the other older dragons, but she's still more capable of tanking those bolts than Vermax or Moondancer. Those dragons are only around 18-20 years old, while Syrax is nearly 40, which makes a pretty substantial difference in that scale protection.

Rando calrissian

Please show this to marketa. Something tells me even if she reads this she'll argue against every single one of your points 😅

DC

she always does the divisive gender politics stuff without actually doing the leg work to justify it. Like she enjoys getting mad at possible instances of misogyny so she'll uncritically "die on a hill". As if there's no other conceivable normal reason for a son to not want his mother and queen and representative of their entire movement to risk her life on a whim. And of course she would think its because she's a woman because the alternative is her facing the idea that she's making rash risky decisions that may not be for the best to the point where her son doesn't trust her. The fact that he died, in a way, could have meant he did prevent his mother from dying and it actually worked. That's difficult to litigate I suppose but it's clear that death was very possible and his decision eliminated his mother from being a potential victim. Maybe its intentional and she's like this for engagement or something because im certainly wasting my life right now
