As it pertains to a show replacing Sopranos: trust me (even though you have no reason to, considering you don’t know me), Deadwood is the right choice. I don’t think that, from a writing/dialogue perspective, there is a better show that has come out of the HBO Family. Amazing show.

Stan the Man

So a lot of people when this show first aired did not like this coma stuff(interesting that someone mentioned The Lost finale). But it all ties in to where the show is going. You can watch The Sopranos for a few different reasons. The mob stuff, the comedy, the day to day of Tony Sopranos and his families. All that is great. But for those who wanna go there, there is also something more happening just under the surface. For example, the opening montage of the season. Meadow was “The Guardian Angel”. And as much as you guys credited Paulie for saving Tony. It was his daughter’s voice that saved him. Meadow. Meadow called him home. Next week is one of my personal favourite episodes.

Stan the Man

Agreed. Deadwood has some of the greatest dialogue of any show or movie. And it has some of the best characters. For me, top GOAT shows are Sopranos, the wire, deadwood, Mad Men & Star Trek Deep Space Nine. One of the greatest TV sins of all time was how the end of Deadwood was handled. If you know the story, it’s an an extremely upsetting example of a misunderstanding that ultimately ended a show way too early. Thankfully we had the movie. Which is better than nothing.

PIG

Godfather 1 and 2 during the break would be great! To be honest, whatever is easiest for you guys. Please don't sweat it.

PIG

I was one of those people so long ago. Now that I'm much older, I love it. Very Twin Peaks.

PIG

@SundayRundown: You guys said Paulie saved Tony, which is pretty funny and understandable. I think it was actually Meadow calling him "not to go" as a kid. Broke my heart. When my mother-in-law was passing away, my wife called to her, and the heart monitor picked right back up, and it suddenly stabilized. She was in an induced coma. Could be coincidences, certainly, but when you have a kid, it changes everything inside of you. I would say for the better.

PIG

I remember The Wire making fun of it. The Wire is my favorite show (to this day), and I thought it was pompous of them to jab at Dexter and Deadwood at the time (it was the last season). I would love them to do the entire Star Trek run, I really really would love it.

Darrell Henry

You guys should replace it with Sons of Anarchy. Think Hamlet but biker gangs. However if you want something shorter go with Deadwood.

Jeff

notice everyone has to specify that it is specifically the dialogue that is top tier and not just writing in general. the dialogue is great, sure, but the writing in general can be very frustrating--from introducing then randomly dropping storylines out of nowhere, major characters meandering for entire seasons (some multiple seasons) with no development or arc, comedy storylines with minor characters given more attention than key characters. And don't get me started on that fan service movie. Most of deadwood is spent meandering; if youre looking for a structured plot with focused character progression, look elsewhere

NICK Luna

In honor of Tim Daly aka Superman in the animated series, i propose you guys watch Wings.

phunkrsd

Oh no, I can go on about the writing as well: loved everything about it, except for the (quite) abrupt ending.

This episodes showcases perfectly what Tony meant when he told Silvio a while back about how heavy the crown is. Every move and decision you make affects everything. The crew smells weakness and indecision as soon as it rears its head. If anything, it shows how effective Tony has been as a boss. Regardless of all of his faults. Highly intelligent and a true alpha male, in the most primitive way sometimes, lol.

#SundayRundown The coma dream is extremely important for Tony’s character this season. When he first wakes up, he asks, “Who am I?” and “Where am I going?” The dream forces him to confront those questions. Tony tries to move through the dream as someone who is simply a family man, which is how he wants to see himself, but he is mistaken for Kevin Finnerty, who represents who Tony actually is. The confusion becomes so profound that even Tony no longer knows who he is or where he is going after he dies. This storyline is especially important because of how The Sopranos portrays death and the different ways people interpret what comes after. Remember what Christopher talked about in Season 2, Episode 9, about his vision of the Italian mob’s version of hell. I also think watching The Godfather Part I and Part II between Part One and Part Two of this season is a great idea. Those films add another layer to understanding The Sopranos, especially its themes of family, power, identity, and the cost of becoming the person you think you’re supposed to be. Then, The Godfather Part III would be a good watch after finishing The Sopranos. Also, Chris, thank you for noticing how AJ blames Carmela for everything because it mirrors how Tony blames Livia for his own problems. AJ is essentially a miniature version of Tony. He inherits many of Tony’s flaws, but since he’s perceived as less masculine and less powerful than Tony, it’s becomes easier for audiences to hate on AJ than it is to criticize Tony and Carmela’s bad parenting because they are super shitty parents.

PIG

Yeah Deadwood kinda floats to end like… deadwood. But still great because of the whole ride there. Tying the knot is so hard in the end….

I do like Silo, it's solid SF like the Expanse but I got to support Deadwood for the next series to watch. Deadwood, The Sopranos and The Wire are a solid trilogy of shows about the rise, decline and collapse of America seen through three places, the Town in North Dakota, Newark in New Jersey and Baltimore, Maryland. The Davids (Milch, Chase, Simon) put some much love and dedication in these shows, seems right we finish the trilogy at the start. Wild West Shakespearean drama with it's record setting profanity and character soliquies is something the Normies should experience.

#SundayRundown Regarding what Chris said about hating AJ, this episode incidentally has the scene that pretty much makes me want to write off the little moron completely - AJ being pissed at his Mom about Chris and Bobby stopping him from trying to buy a gun. It's absurd how clueless he is - the dumbass actually thinks that his mother and sister got together with Tony's top guys to discuss killing Junior, and they collectively decided to box AJ out because they think he isn't ready. Stellar writing to showcase how delusional AJ is, and it drives me up the f*cking wall. Also, joining the masses to shill Deadwood yet again. Deadwood is as awesome as AJ is stupid.

Jesse

I agree, Deadwood is one of the great HBO shows, it's only three seasons and a movie so it won't take too much time. It has one of the best characters in any show in Al Swearengen and the dialogue is impeccable.

Marvin Botello

If my calculations are correct, then the Sopranos reaction videos will be done around the week or the week before Thanksgiving.

Veya

the centerpiece of the episode was meadow calling out to tony to bring him back. they've always had one of the most pure relationship in the show. a big point of the episode was to contrast the fake family with the real family and the ending scene with carmela further reinforces that. meadow saving tony was foreshadowed in the opening episode of the season, if you go back to the the song (not the opening credits, but the one in the episode proper), it associated her with a guardian angel. also the quote featured near the end of the episode is incredibly important and very layered in how it applies to the show. there's a lot to say about it in the upcoming episodes of the season.

SunnydaleClassof99

Deadwood would be so amazing for them to dive into. I really feel like it would add something new to the channel as well.

SunnydaleClassof99

Wings definitely feels underappreciated in comparison to all the heavy hitter sitcoms from that era.

SunnydaleClassof99

#SundayRundown Just an absolutely fantastic episode. So many amazing threads here. Carmella's session with Dr. Melfi is massive. We finally get her unfiltered thoughts on how she's become entangled with crime & what she actually feels like that says about her.

adrian toribio

watch Boardwalk Empire next it's great

christopher

From would be a great show

NICK Luna

A person of taste, i've been doing a rewatch this year and it's gold,.....gold jerry, gold!

SunnydaleClassof99

It was on for eight seasons during NBC's ratings glory days. I very rarely see it mentioned though. I feel like I've seen every episode an absurd amount of times thanks to USA reruns back in the day. I wish someone would clean up the picture & give it nice a proper release. I know that's a pipe dream though 😆

NICK Luna

Its a shame the show isnt seen anymore. During my rewatch ive noticed a ton of jokes that were on wings that was reused on friends.

Stan the Man

That’s like saying “notice how everyone mentions how great Bob Dylan’s lyrics are but don’t ever mention the songs”. Deadwood has some of the best dialogue ever recorded. It’s such an amazing feature that it’s the first thing people think of. That isn’t a slight on anything else in the show. What makes deadwood great are the characters and the writing. I know people went into the show expecting gunfights galore, they want those western tropes. Deadwood was more interested in the building of a community and society. You say the show “meanders”. I say it marinates. It’s just a shame we never got a 4th season.

#sundayrundown watch the godfather

VenturaInTheBaja

LILLYHAMMER is the sequel to Sopranos. Was hilarious. Also SILO is good stuff.

Moe Davinci

How many episodes is The Wire? That or Broadwalk Empire seems like good fit for the crime drama replacement after The Sopranos.

Erik D

Suggesting 'Mad Men' when Matthew Weiner's name comes up is a sign; it's kismet.

DC

yeah deadwood is honestly the best written hbo show. Tight three seasons. Ends really well because they knew it might not get picked up. And a movie to give it more finality.

Gayle ED

True Detective series 1, Fargo.
