Identity is a big theme in the show, and especially for Paule. He's the most Italian-American, the most catholic and even the most mobster out of all of them. And whenever one of those identities is threatened he reacts how he react to everything violently. Paule despite being one of the oldest characters is quite immature. And he really can't see life outside that mobster framework.

Ok. So here’s a fun fan theory that I 100% believe is legit thing. We may have in fact met Paulie’s biological father in a season 5 episode. It’s true. What do we know about Paulie’s father? His name is Russ, he served in World War II, he was “lonely” & banged a Nun. If you think back to the season 5 episode “Marco Polo”, the episode with the big party out back celebrating Carmela’s father(Hugh) birthday?(where Carm & Tony bang in the pool) One of Hugh’s friends & war buddies was “Russ Fegoli”. He’s the pompous asshole that Carm’s mom seems to be obsessed with. Carm’s dad even mentions that Russ was getting so much ass in the war that he had a bad case of the crabs(So was Russ really a lonely solider or was this a ruse he used to score with nurses?). A more tenuous connection is that Russ Fegoli mentions his job took him to the Vatican where he met the Pope(Paulie’s real mother is a Nun). There is one more pretty major connection that seals it for me personally but we will have to wait until episode 9 to discuss it. So connecting the two we have the name Russ, a lonely solider in world war 2, the Vatican and a very big thing that is revealed in a later episode. Plus if you ask me Russ Fegoli even kinda looks a little like Paulie, especially the nose. Though since this is a TV show and not a documentary I doubt that’s anything more than coincidence. But if you look at the two together and squint real hard? There’s a passing resemblance.

The biggest question for Tony this season is, “Who am I?” and “Where am I going?” Throughout the episode, the Ojibwe saying is repeated not just for Paulie, but for Tony as well. That’s why he’s so interested in what John Schwinn, the elderly patient, says about his philosophical monism, that good and evil may simply be different expressions of the same reality. Tony latches onto this because it offers him an escape hatch. If morality is ultimately blurred, then perhaps his actions aren’t something he’ll be judged for. Throughout the series, Tony constantly looks for intellectual or psychological frameworks that relieve him of responsibility rather than force him to confront it. He isn’t searching for truth as much as he’s searching for absolution without repentance. This is the same pattern Tony displays with his Catholic faith, he embraces ideas that comfort him but resists any belief system that requires accountability . This episode shows exactly who Tony is. His near-death experience should have transformed him, yet even during his recovery in the hospital, he’s still selfish and entitled. Later, he claims that “every day is a gift,” but his actions show that his experience in purgatory didn’t fundamentally change who he is. By the way, Melfi wrote the Ojibwe note, Carmela vaguely mentions it in the last episode that she wrote something for Tony. It’s another reminder that Melfi still believes Tony can change. But by this point, she also understands that his biggest psychological defense is self-pity

Very insightful!

Interesting theory. Big time Sopranos fan, seen it in it's entirety multiple times and this is the first time I've heard this one.

#Sundayrundown watch the godfather

it's not true that his experience didn't fundamentally change who is, because tony in the past wouldn't have even tried. melfi has constantly harped on tony in therapy for not trying. even if tony's selfishness and entitlement hasn't changed much (and it doesn't seem realistic nor in this show's style for him to change drastically like that), his actions ARE different, like observably so. i don't think chase was going for as something as binary as you're suggesting. there's no way season 3-5 tony forgives money owed to him with no strings attached. that's literally a different action. tony shows more warmth towards carmela and janice. again, that's change in action. i agree with you that, his fundamental behavior and attitude hasn't changed, but again, that's a tall order, and actions do matter. there's more to say about this in the coming episodes, but it's be too spoilery here.

#SundayRundown The Fleshy Part of the Thigh the bells heard at the end of the episode were he talks to Janice and says every day is a gift is a nod to the bells from the movie it's a wonderful life There is a conspiracy theory that in August this year on the 12 that earth will lose gravity for 7 seconds

Stan the Man

Well if your around for episode 9 the theory gets a lot stronger. Without spoiling if you know episode 9 well(The Ride), Paulie is extremely worried about something. Well Russ Fegoli… nuff said.

this show isn't really tribalistic about catholicism vs the other forms of the religion. iirc david chase isn't religious himself. pretty sure they're just using another denomination to show a fundamentalist because it's a way to expose tony to these extreme ideas or else he would have heard them before from his own local parish. also relating the dinosaurs to tony because of age is interesting and a natural enough association. it can also connect to the idea of evolution that was also brought up in the episode. how it relates to tony and paulie, or any of the other characters on the show that are in the middle of crossroads.

SunnydaleClassof99

It's a pretty life altering thing to find out & he's probably the most devoted person to his mother we see so it's understandable to feel a bit betrayed. Of course he reacts to it though in a very much Paulie way 😄

SunnydaleClassof99

#SundayRundown The rapper shot by Bobby is played by Treach, one of the founding members of pioneering hip-hop group Naughty By Nature. I love the conversations with Tony & the scientist. He's played by Hal Holbrook, an amazing actor who had a Tony Award winning one man show about Mark Twain that he performed for over 60 years.

KT

It's also not hard to believe that Paulie is reacting this way because of finances. He sees absolutely everything in his life in terms of money, and his mom has always been the only exception, until now.

Dante Sparda

You’re right that Tony’s actions change after the coma. What I disagree with is the conclusion that this represents Tony actually trying to change. There are multiple times before Season 6 where Tony acts kinder or shows generosity, only to revert to the same patterns. The coma gives him a temporary sense of gratitude and perspective, but his underlying worldview, his need for control, his entitlement, his violence and his rationalizations remains intact. If those core traits don’t change, then it’s just a temporary shift in behavior, just like Janice, not a transformation of his character.

Small correction the Christian guy wasn't saying dinosaurs didn't exist just they lived with humans at the same time
