The City of Graffiti | Gachiakuta Season 1 Episode 9 | The Normies Group Reaction!

Rana, Suraj, Navi, Pat, and Marketa present the reaction and review to possibly the best anime of the year, Gachiakuta Season 1 Episode 9 "The City of Graffiti" - SPOILER ALERT - To get a "spell" for their next mission, the Cleaners head to Canvas Town, where they make a tragic discovery. Gob passed away that morning. The Mayor tearfully reflects on Gob’s love for painting and his desire to preserve joy, which led him to become mayor despite being unable to paint himself. Enjin shares that Gob frequently visited Cleaner headquarters and that he’ll miss the mischievous grin Gob wore when sneaking off to paint. Remlin suddenly stands and declares they’re “done,” startling everyone. Wiping their tears, they announce it’s time to celebrate, grabbing the pen Vital Instrument and dashing outside. On the rooftop, Remlin sets up spray cans and explains that Gob wouldn’t want everyone crying. Activating the Vital Instrument, the pen transforms into a brush. As Remlin paints a pattern around the cans, they explode into colorful fireworks. Declaring that Gob’s life should be celebrated, Remlin inspires the city. Another good episode! I love the world building, the explanation of dangerous polluted zones, different ways people can become Givers, and the emotions in the writing. Like we meet Gob for a minute in episode 4, but this episode made it feel like more. I also like Remlin character bc I thinks is very brave to be positive during a hard times! I'm not 100% sure but I think Remlin is Non-Binary bc when the mayor was addressing them, he never call Remain he or she. He kept saying they or them

2026-09-10 02:00 Damn, Marketa quick on the context clues lol but yes Remlin is very much a gender ambiguous character, both in the Japanese and English dub they are referred to using gender neutral terms like kid, they, or just Remlin and in an official character art by KeI Urana herself the words "Boy? Girl?" Are posted around Remlin indicating it is intentional to keep Remlin's gender neutral. Some cool representation in this series.

2026-09-10 02:00 Maaaaan I felt Marketa's gaze the second Suraj made his "immigrant" joke XD While I do agree with wanting to see more of Job, I like to think doing it this way was a very deliberate choice. This show has a big message on secondary/tertiary effects of things that are outside of our immediate concern. In that sense I think the show did a great job having him not really be someone we know beyond "he was there at some point" and making it this impactful. Also I need to give Kei (or potentially any anime writers/editors) props for not doing what I really expected them to. I thought the same as Suraj that Remlin stole something in the beginning, and when they brought up Job's death I thought it was going to be a kind of crime caper arc between Relin and the Mayor

BindingofNack

In the modern world of 10 episode seasons and all gas no brakes storytelling this episode has always stood out to me, not as "filler" because even while this episodes events are inconsequential in terms of big bombastic fights, this episode has such a good sense of world building and subtle storytelling only made available because this season was given enough episodes that it allowed this one to breathe.

Evann Tchimou

NO Remlin is a girl; Kei Urana never said that

Evann Tchimou

Stop saying that Remlin is nonbinary; she is a girl, that's all. Kei Urana never said that remlin is non binary

Envyus

I honestly don't think it's clear. The sub in particular gives them a pretty masculine voice.
