I wanted John's backstory, but this episode hit me on an emotional level.

Spencer!! I needed that Ospreay All-In intro reaction… yesterday! 😉🤣

I really love how we got more of John's backstory and it just recontextualizing the first 2 epsidoes so well of why the apple shooting and his and Ha's current partner ship training stuff. If I was Hal I'd be upset at the Guardians too like he is literally Earths first Green lantern and he's been doing it since the 80's since John was a baby.

I absolutely loved this episode. It’s my favorite of the show thus far. Wow. I love seeing black characters with black stories and black dynamics put into comic book realms Unfortunately a sub section of the ‘individuals’ on the internet heard “black” a few too many times in the episode and their personal fragility got hit as if the John Stewart character’ creation isn’t directly linked to social justice and addressing racism/prejudice….

Man...Hal was lucky he didnt get deaded when he called John and his parents "midwest Huxtables" in their own home...

#SundayRundown I think it's a bit telling that the main villain this season is a Manhunter, because that's exactly what John has been raised to be. He was raised to be a machine, he wasn't given a choice really, his entire identity was to be a Green Lantern. Hell, the first time he's allowed to follow his passions and do art, it turns out to be a GL test. He's never really lived for himself and that's sad. Yet at the same time, I worry that this is exactly what the Guardians wanted. A loyal, unfearing machine with a moral compass. Something just a bit more human than the Manhunters were initially...

#SundayRundown I am so torn about this episode. Because on one hand it was absolutely fantastic and made me really hate John’s abusive family. On the other it did ruin a very good comic book character to do so. Mrs. Stewart is incredibly lovely woman and an avid activist who’s passion for social justice made John socially minded and care about his community, which is why in many of his early stories it was about fighting injustice against the black community. Here she’s just…evil? Like I get it, I get what she’s saying and understand why she feels like that growing up as a black woman in the 60’s/70’s(depending on how old she is) but she’s also an abusive mother that tried turned her child into an emotionless machine that follows orders.

good thing literally no one agrees with you

Stanley Etienne

It's just my opinion. I don't need everyone to agree with me to express an opinion.

Ace

Totally agree, I think it's unfortunate we won't get that version of the character. I don't totally hate what they went for but John and his mom's relationship is one of my favorite parts of his comics and something I could always relate to as well.

Love the channel love the reactions but just watch they answer your questions 😭 yall question everything immediately after it’s said lol

Zeee

How does this ruin a character that no one brings up or cares about? This episode gives me nuance and complexity to not only his mom but John’s entire origin that’s often very straight forward and basic. She’s hard on her son BECAUSE she and her husband grew up in the midst of the Civil Rights movement. They want John to be perfect for the job based on her understanding of what the Guardian told her.

You’re entitled to your trash opinion

This episode was incredible. My favorite of the season. And i thought people wouldn’t like to bc it was a flashback and would think it’s boring but EVERYBODY is freaking out about “anti white sentiment” “privilege” it’s insane. These themes were introduced in the original John Stewart run! And everybody is blaming Gunn for ruining the comics. Very idiotic people and it is super unfortunate bc this episode was great and very deep. Of course Hal grew up with fears, his dad freaking died in a plane explosion. Yet people can’t understand the nuances of it and what they were portraying, which was true back then! (And still today somewhat) great reaction! This show is great!!!!

#SundayRundown Lanterns just keeps getting better with each episode. This one hit home for me- the writer captured a feeling I know all too well, namely the tension that can come with being black in America. Everyone feels it differently (or not at all) depending on upbringing. I was blown away by John's mother's performance. I assumed that John Sr. was a single dad based on how the first two issues never mentioned her and then I was rooting for him to shoot off of her head instead of his dad's. I was thinking "You talk a lot of crap- walk the walk and put the apple on YOUR head!" :-) Having Hal sandbag John's sniper mission was a stroke of genius (why does how Hal found out remind me of the current administration? :-). It lends a new element to their rocky trainer/trainee relationship, not to mention the fact that John isn't there to learn to be Hal's backup, but his replacement. If Hal is truly dead, John will move Heaven and Earth to get that ring. God help Guy Gardner because we know that after spending his whole life preparing to be Green Lantern John won't just let him keep the ring.

Jacob Livingston

can yall put y’all’s post reaction discussion on the full reaction link? Please🙏

Dragon

John's parents and the Guardians are so fucked up. Both teach John to resent Hal Jordan for things that aren't really his fault. John being overly obedient and having no real sense of self (outside of his art) is a really interesting take. I'd be pissed if I was Hal too.

Dragon

I understand what they were going for with the inherent fears that would be present within black men in America, but I feel most people would be scared if they got lifted up in a green bubble randomly at night. The fact Hal wasn't is less about privilege and more about his strength of will. I appreciate the sentiment and message they were trying to convey, it just doesn't mesh well with how the Ring selection works in the DCU.

Sage

I would genuinely hate to get recommendations from you then

Sage

There’s PLENTY of terrible moms in media, everyone just feels better highlighting the dads

That scene of the siblings in the car was so accurate
