Everything you saw Speirs do actually happened.

"D-Day" is just the name of the day (June 6) the Allies began their offense on the French coast/Normandy (Operation Overlord). The failed Operation Market Garden was episode 4 and continued fighting in Holland in episode 5, and the German offensive, the Battle of the Bulge, was episodes 6 and 7. D-Day was in early summer and now we're past Christmas into the early months of 1945, so it's been well over 6 months since Episode 2. Hope this helps.

Except the hearsay flashback of him brutally executing prisoners from earlier in the series; that was just soldiers trading unconfirmed gossip and the show giving it to us in a sort of fantasy as the soldiers wonder if it's true. But the things that happen in front of everyone in battles are confirmed by the many witnesses.

I'm not sure if this anwers Marketa's question about military tactics but soldiers holding the line was common place, especially on the Eastern Front. It allowed other elements of the military to flank and penetrate key points so the German lines could crumble. This war was on a grand scale so there could be situations where soldiers are holding a line for hundreds of miles waiting for a push by the army somewhere far away. One thing to keep in mind, WWII is the deadliest war in human history in terms of total number of deaths. Between 60 and 80 million people died and a lot of the front lines were a meat grinder.

Was excited for you guys to get to Lt. Ronald Steve Rogers Spiers. Did not disappoint. And yes, it really happened. Spiers was a total G.

It also serves the purpose of holding the line prior to an attack. As the episode shows, the allies were going back on the offensive. But before they could start pushing forward and taking those towns, you HAVE to build up your forces and reinforce your supply lines beforehand or the attack wouldn't be successful. Chris nailed it. You hold the line until the attack is supplied and ready.

Hoobler’s death sucked. Imagine going through some of the toughest training in the army, jumping into Normandy, assaulting town after town, surviving Market Garden, getting the shit blasted out of you in Bastogne.... only to get taken out by a misfiring German weapon, what a shame.

The one thing really annoying about this episode is how it makes you think Dike died in the fighting while he hide behind the haystack, but he was in fact transferred out and promoted. That's Spielberg, I guess, though.

"D-Day has at least been going on for a week now." Dude! D-Day was June 6th. Last episode was Christmas. lol

Aes86

1 glaring inaccuracy . Dike was actually wounded during the attack, which is why he was incoherent, he was suffering from blood loss, but like Hoobler earlier , they didn't realize it right away. 1 glaring accuracy. Speirs did run through and back the German lines during the battle.

I'm a little late to the party but I'll try and fill in some behind the scenes stuff: I go by the name "Shifty" whenever I'm playing an FPS game. Mostly to honor him. So the name isn't forgotten. There's a story about him that really shows how great a marksman he was. One day Shifty is patrolling or whatever. All of a sudden, a mile away, he notices something he hadn't seen before. A tree suddenly was there where it wasn't before. He let Lipton know of his suspicion and of course, it turns out to be a tank.. or an 88. I forget. But they promptly responded. It was a testament to how gifted Shifty was and how well he was trained not just by Easy, but by his upbringing.. his father. The part about Shifty taking out that sniper is also true. Except, oddly enough, in the show it looks like not too much of a difficult shot. But in real life it is a crazy fucking shot. The whole of Bastogne and The Breaking Point was filmed in a giant hanger. There were static "trees" and also some that were rigged to "blow up" during the mortar scenes. So yeah, not exactly filmed on site. And alot of CGI for other stuff. Spiers was most definitely badass. And as other said, everything happened the way it happened. Some insight though on that part where Winters wanted to go into the field and was held back by Colonel Sink. The only reason Spiers was picked by Winters was he simply happened to be the first person he saw when he turned around. It was just a chance thing that it was the best decision. Just incase there was any confusion about Nixon giving his furlough to Peacock. It was because they wanted him out... so while Peacock thought everyone was happy FOR him, they were happy to get RID of him. So... one of the reasons why the 101st survived Bastogne was not just because of how good they were... but because of how bad the German strategy was. The 101st was surrounded, but the German army only attacked in sections so they were easy repelled. Had the Germans attacked from all sides they would have been done for.

Yeah Dyke was a decorated soldier as well, shows even people who on paper should be good leaders can fail when needed.

To address Marketa's question about why they were just sitting their being shelled... the basic strategy with assaulting a possition is you would shell it with artillery as much as possible to break or weaken the defenses. If Easy Company was not in those woods, the Germans would just have moved into them. That's why Easy Company had to be there. The Germans didn't have the materials left to assault a position like that , but they could keep shelling it and soften it up so when the Allies attacked them at Foye, they'd be weaker. And if somehow their artillery did force Easy company to retreat... then they could advance and take that position. Sadly in war you have to end up just letting the other side pound you just so they don't control the ground. Easy Company had to sit there and take it so the Germans wouldn't take it, and they couldn't attack as they didn't have the men or supplies to launch an attack yet. So all they could do was sit there and hold the ground until the assault was ready.

I think what confused Marketa is why the higher ups would knowingly send troops to their possible death. The harsh reality is that commanders at that level literally have to treat the ground troops like pawns to get the job done. For example, that general from the previous episode. Winters and Nixon tried explaining the shitty situation in Bastogne but that general kept saying “hold the line” despite the losses and shortages. He only cared about the tactical importance of that area which he kinda needed to do. It’s messed up, but it was necessary at the time.

Been loving these BoB reactions, one of my alltime fav shows. Can't wait for the rest of the episodes and the conclusion

It's important to note that Normandy is a region in France. The 506th, in this episode, are in Foy, Belgium--around 300 miles away from Normandy. They were in Normandy for a few days, starting on the night of June 5, 1944. It's now January 1945. D-Day began and ended in Episode 2.
