Ill timed smoke monster joke

Russians were giving info on concentration camps as early as 1941 but the allies didn't believe them

Saitama

The thought that something so heinous could exist was probably quite unbelievable

Daniel Sessions

Anyone see the movie Boy in Striped Pajamas, the Dad was in charge of the a camp and the rest of the family didn't really know, all they knew was that Jewish people, and others, were being gathered up. All around Germany they had these little films about how great they were treating the Jewish, and how the camps were nice places.

Andrew

You have to understand, guys - the Nazi propaganda machine was really strong back then and there was no internet to expose that propaganda, so most of the intelligence Allies had about the camps was from spies & Jewish refugees. And as cliche as it may sound Allies leaders just found it too hard to believe. It's also important to remember that antisemitism was well and alive both in Europe and the US at that time, so even when Allies' own spies told them about execution chambers they just dismissed that as an over exaggeration, let alone the rumours by the refugees. So were there people in high ranking positions in Allies governments & military that had information these camps existed and what was going on in them? Absolutely. They just chose not to act upon that information either because of their own prejudices or because the truth was too frightening. The locals definitely knew or at least had a good idea about what was happening in camps, but what can they do? Nothing as they will only get themselves killed "trying to do the right thing". The better question is: why did none of them come and help as soon as the German army left? Now THAT is inhumane and unforgivable.

Yeah, like... the idea that huge swathes of people could be carted off to prison labour (and eventually execution) camps was really unthinkable. Additionally Japanese internment camps in the US were pretty awful, and plenty of americans were anti-semetic. the US didn't enter the war to liberate those imprisoned in the camps, that was a byproduct of pushing into Germany.

Comparing the genocide of 6 million jews by Germany to the detention of illegal immigrants is insulting to the victims of the holocaust. Putting people in large cages while waiting for asylum hearings or deportations is not cool. We should fix that. But to compare it to gassing thousands of people a day and burning their bodies to ash? Please. Let's have a LITTLE perspective. Good discussion, though. Never not important.

I watched that in a film as lit class in high school. 25 kids, a few of whom were well known hard asses, and not a dry eye in the house.

Gabtab0000

To this day, I still can’t believe that people are denying that the holocaust happened.

They obviously weren’t making a one for one comparison. They were just naming something in modern times that’s happening in their country where people are being rounded up against their will and being put in some kind of captivity.

War trophies and looting were allowed back in WW2 and previous wars. But I think after one of the Geneva Conventions it was outlawed. One of the things I learned in basic training was looting was not allowed. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you can see Cpt. Speirs loot random stuff in the background in some episodes. He takes anything that’s shiny.

The speed or something on my HBOnordic version must be different cause it always goes out of sync after a sec or two :/

In a recent survey of millennials and gen Z, two thirds didn't know how many Jews died during the Holocaust. I was pretty shocked when I read that and it only reinforced my opinion that shows like Band Of Brothers should be watched by everyone at least once in their life.

Also there wasn't an Olympics during WW2. Germany was 1936 with Jesse Owens. Then 1940 was cancelled (in Tokyo) and 1944 was cancelled (London). 1948 was the first Olympics since the war started.

Vendrix

Many Germans didn't know what was going on in their own backyard - not like the knowledge of the camps was spread out to everyone...I don't know why you guys all say "they knew"...???? No they fucking didn't. Do you know what goes on in Area 51? That's in our own country. Think of multiple Area 51's in Germany but instead of being a top secret base, they're secret death camps. Not that hard to imagine.

Cyridius

It is simply not possible that millions of people could be imprisoned like that and murdered without people knowing. The prisoners in the camps didn't arrest, transport, administrate and kill themselves, guys! The majority of German people at that time had accepted Nazi ideology and what came with it, and that acceptance was only broken when they were absolutely crushed. The only Germans of that time whose hands are clean of the brutality of Nazism were the ones who resisted and the ones of defected and fought against fascism in the war.

Cyridius

The fact of the matter is that German people broadly knew about the Holocaust and consented to it. Historical research validates that fact. The idea that the German people were innocent of the crime was a myth spread by Nazis in order to excuse their participation, and it's one of the many Nazi myths that their apologists and supporters have gotten to take hold in popular consciousness. But it is nonetheless a myth, and a dangerous one, because it hides exactly how fascism operates. And it's obvious that people would know when you think about it. You can't carry out an incarceration and killing of MILLIONS of people without a massive logistics operation. It's just not possible. Prisoners did not arrest themselves, transport themselves, administer themselves, feed themselves (when they were fed), or kill themselves. Not to mention all of their property and assets that the Nazis stole - where do you think that went? This all required mass participation and coordination.

You know this from reading on it, or are postulating from a position in 2020 about what it must have been like in 1939? Because things are not the same now or information as accessible in the 1930's - 40's as today. Yes they knew people were being arrested. There was a ton of propaganda, doesn't mean they knew the conditions or what happened to the people after being arrested.

MarkyO

I'm QUITE late to the party.. I woke up super late and needed to do some "work"... Anyway... yeah there's a BTS docu about the filming of it where it shows that they all went through tough training. Fun fact, Colonel Sink's RL actor was one of the one's training them. And also the guy in episode 1 who was like "Any refusal in the plane or at the door and you will be out of the airborne" is also one of the people training them in real life. Another fun fact, David Schwimmer had very little contact with the rest of the cast. It was as if he was Sobel already. Although not on purpose. It just happened to be that way. A troubling fact, or... A sad one. Many of the extras in the concentration camps had cancer. That's why they looked so thin and sick. Because they were. Don't think I have much else on this episode. It was pretty straight forward. Everyone else touched on things.

Vlad the Third

This exact shit is happening TODAY in China. Millions of uighurs in camps and NOBODY is doing jack shit about it. Twitter is filled with virtue signaling puritans frothing at the mouth about manspreading or whatever bullshit but when it comes to that.. crickets.

GenAntilles

Whether German people knew what was going on is a difficult question. With the Gestapo and other secret police and Nazi enforcers, anyone who would speak out against those camps would end up in one themselves. The Nazis killed thousands of their own soldiers and tens of thousand of their own civilians when they dared to speak up or take a stand against that stuff. It's easy for people now to say they'd never do nothing if it were them... but you never know until it's you. For most of them, they just tried to justify or rationalize it... or they just put their head down and pretended it wasn't happening. I mean we have China likely doing almost the same thing now... and what is anyone doing about it?

There's not much we can do about it sadly. China has the world's largest army and the world's largest economy and the government could care less about how popular they are. The best we could do is more economic sanctions.

Besides being the theme of this episode, "Why We Fight" is also the name of a series of famous wartime documentaries by Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) to boost recruitment during WWII and to sway Americans' opinions towards the war (Americans were largely "non interventionist" before Pearl Harbor and felt that the conflict in Europe wasn't relevant to them).

You talking about the training the actors went through reminded me of Ron Livingston’s (Cpt. Nixon) video diaries during boot camp. https://youtu.be/Ju11gCisOL4 It’s spoiler free in case the Normies wanna check it out.

On a somewhat lighter note the boat trucks that you guys noticed were D.U.K.W.'s (called ducks). They were trucks that could float across rivers or land on beaches from landing craft. Now the exact same ones from WWII are used as tourist buses/boats across the US and other places. They don't have a great safety record because the DUKW's weren't exactly designed for safety, they were designed to float for a few minutes and get to land.

DeucesBruh

The Nazis did not kill anyone who didn’t have blonde hair and blue eyes. The Nazis considered those features ideal characteristics of the “Aryan Race”, but it wasn’t the rule for whether you were put into a camp. Jews, LGBTQ+, Gypsies, Catholics to a lesser extent, were all considered “undesirable.” Just heard some talk about that in the video, just thought I would clarify.

Thee Chronicle

Slavic people (Orthodox Christians) and Jewish people were the 2 main groups hated and targeted by Hitler. blonde hair blue eyes wasn't that much of a thing since Hitler obviously had neither feature lol.
