Fun fact the character Waylon is played by Steve Earle, a famous country/rock musician who has struggled with addiction. His version of "Way Down in the Hole" is used for season 5. He also had a hit "Copperhead Road" which is a banger even if you don't like country imo, which I don't too much personally but it's pretty rockin

I know bird talked mad smack but to be fair they did hit him in a face with a bottle prior to that, so isn't a little bit of back lash expected

Yeah I'm all for a little beating up on homophobes, but not when they're restrained, about to go to jail, and you hold all the power anyway and it's kind of your whole job not to beat up on defenseless people. I don't feel sorry for Bird because he sucks (love to see Fredro Starr whenever he pops up in something though), but the principle of it bothers me.

Will you guys do double drops for The Wire?

I think those were state Senators; not US Senators. Micky asked a question about Baltimore and while I don't live in Baltimore the city I live in, St. Louis, is extremely similar. I think the biggest issue both cities have is they're one of the few major cities where the city itself isn't connected with the county. St. Louis and Baltimore will always be near the top in crime because the city/county split impacts the crime statistics even though in a case like St. Louis the criminal area is in a relatively small area. The city/county split has massive impact over time in terms of tax revenue and business opportunities. In St. Louis, over time businesses moved to the county and downtown has slowly died. If I were to make an educated guess this is probably the case with Baltimore.

The senator is a State Senator in the Maryland Senate, of which there are about 50 from each district, not a US Senator... It's plausible that someone who's wasn't involved in local politics up until now wouldn't know who he was.

If Mickey was still wondering why Baltimore is as bad as it is, from what I've gathered it's mostly due to a long history of social injustice.....also the drugs are a big reason as to why the city is as bad as it is, the drugs and poverty/missed opportunities in the community create this vicious cycle. From my experience the police in Baltimore are either young and just starting out (which means they handle situations brashly) or they've been on the job for a while (which can sometimes make them lazy so they'll try to be sneaky about most situations), these qualities in policemen don't build much trust between them and the community they claim to want to protect (there are many who consider it just a job or who aren't as morally sound as they'd consider themselves to be).

Two things, 1-Lit means intoxicated and has for over a 100 years, only in last decade or so did it also mean cool, 2- Steve Earl and Donnell Rawlings in the house!

White Flight destroys entire neighborhoods throughout the 20th century. The crack epidemic of the late '70s/'80s/early '90s destroyed a lot of East Coast cities. Philly, Baltimore, and DC were hit particularly hard by it (all 3 cities subsequently gained notoriety for their extremely high homicide rates). The War on Drugs made the situation even worse. Police resources focused less on murders, rapes and robberies and more on rounding up broke corner kids (who are immediately replaced) and tossing them in jail where they become hardened criminals in a meaningless cycle. In all of these cities, city governments tended to focus on developing and pouring money into their downtown districts and their wealthiest neighborhoods instead of the poor or working class ones (you see, it's trickle down economics, except, you know, it never actually trickles down). Lack of engagement and media focus on city politics and elections breeds corrupt city officials. Blue collar jobs have been steadily disappearing for decades, creating the slow death of the working class. State Governments, which tend to play to suburban or rural constituents, don't like to give tax money to cities. Outsiders tend to think that crime-ridden cities are the way they are because people just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and stop being lazy. Or, more commonly, they just attribute it to their racist beliefs. All this isn't unique to Baltimore, it's common in cities throughout the U.S. and, in some form or another, probably the rest of the world as well. The root of most social problems is poverty, and poverty has to be tackled from many angles at the same time: welfare, jobs/training, health, education and criminal justice reform.

Shit still reminds me of how much I fuckin hate police

Wow no Tokyo hate this episode. We’re actually getting somewhere.

I love your reactions to Bubbles immediately shooting up after what appeared to be a life changing moment. You all (besides Chris obviously) expected him to at least make the attempt to quit after hearing that testimony. Instant gratification is a cheap literary trope that many writers use when they're too lazy to portray the journey of an actual addict. The look in Bubbs eyes was enough to see that those gears were turning. Problem is, Bubbs has no family, and his only real friend in the whole world is an addict that is content with how things have been going. It's hard enough beating drug addiction. It's nearly impossible to do when you're in the battle alone. Heroin of all things.

kivu_king

i like spidey, he's a nice addition to these reactions, also, the highlight for this episode is surely the bar scene with mcnulty and bunk being drunk lovable fuckers

It's interesting (and kinda hilarious) that Prez is Marketa's least favorite person in the show right now. Seeing as... well nevermind haha. I know Chris must be dieing inside at the irony of it all 😂

A L

please turn Marketa's mic down. it is ridiculously loud. edit: it looks like it's just the uncut

I really wish you would make the uncuts downloadable. Vimeo is terrible. I have very fast broadband but it keeps buffering today and it stuffs up the synch between the two videos.

Was that Clay Davis we spotted at the dinner? SHEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT.

You guys are doing a great job. Collectively you're picking up stuff that took me a couple watches to pick up.
