Itachi uses the ultimate genjutsu technique Koto Amatsukami to free himself from the Reanimation Jutsu. Itachi then joins Naruto and Killer Bee to fight Nagato, who is still under Kabuto’s control.

Healthy Nagato is strong AF. He was able to subdue BOTH the 8 and 9 tails jinchuriki on his own. If not for Itachi, Kabuto could've just won right there lol

A healthy Nagato able to utilize all the rinnegan abilities was incredibly strong so Kishimoto had to have Itachi regain control or naruto and killer bee would have been killed easily

The reinigan in the six paths is not a metaphor. Jiraiya and other characters explicitly mention the eyes and the fact that all 6 of them possess them. That is not metaphorical. It's just a physical manifestation of Nagato's chakra so yes there is truly one pair but it is not metaphorical. That's why Tobi goes to Konan looking for Nagato's body. Not any of the paths of pain.
