I didn't really get the feeling they hate Michael just that he makes them cringe which is what his character is supposed to be. If anything it seemed like they felt sorry for him because he is just so oblivious but really wants people to like him.

Keep in mind most of us are coming at this from the perspective of someone who's seen the whole show and know what his character becomes. I love Michael but I can 100% understand how people wouldn't like him at this stage of the show

Everyone I ever watched the show with or talked about it back when this was current certainly did. People weren't trained to scan everything they watch for what Fox News tells them offends them back then though. We just laughed at jokes.
