Round Table Discussion: the 'Composite' Stigma (Patreon)
Content
Here's a video recording of the Sept 6th, 2022 discussion Royce Bair, Mike Ver Sprill and host Aaron King had about the stigma we often give to "composite" Milky Way nightscapes — where a Milky Way sky image that was NOT taken at the EXACT spot your foreground image was taken. This is technically a composite but the term "composite" carries the connotation of a potential lie about the validity of the image —implying that you also faked the Milky Way. The image is legit, while at the same time cobbled together from two different locations.
We discuss the process, defend and argue against its method, and then end the show coining the new method of capture. Will it be forever known as a composite? A Drop-In Milky Way? An adapted Milky Way? Even a Local Blend maybe?
Here are some of the terms we came up with (from the live audience participation):
- 1 - True Alternate Skies
- 2 - Drop-In
- 3 - Adapted
- 4 - Composite (stick with it)
- 5 - Local Blend
- 6 - Area Blend
- 7 - Digital Art
- 8 - True Swap
- 9 - True Alternate
