Today's eBook update is by Guest Artist, Benjamin Barakat. Although my ebook is mainly about photographing the Milky Way as points of light, I am adding a few pages on how to do star trails, including today's advanced technique by Benjamin.
The above image was made the traditional way: hundreds of high ISO images from a timelapse sequence (900 images @ ISO 3200, 20 seconds each, f/1.4 — using a 20mm lens), stacked end-to-end in StarStaX, with final image processing in Photoshop (including some additional tweaks in Luminar Neo).
In order to make the star trails as colorful as he wanted, Benjamin had to darken his stars in Adobe Raw Converter (ARC is the engine for both Photoshop and Lightroom) BEFORE giving the images to StarStaX for stacking. This darkening process was to try and recover some of the star highlights that are typically blown out by the high ISOs used in timelapse photography.
Although timelapse allows one to obtain two final products: a timelapse video or a star trail image (depending on how you process the images), Benjamin did not believe that high ISO timelapse photography was the best technique for really rich star trail photos. Benjamin feels the above image, albeit richer in color than most star trail images, is still a compromise.
His new, dedicated technique for doing star trails, revealed in the attached PDF, produces even better results, with richer star color variations and more apparent trails.
