Except Rowling herself admitted that was a mistake after looking back on the books. She had decided on Hermione and Ron being an item ahead of time, without realizing they are actually really horrible for each other; given they have nothing in common.

yeah Rowling has long since admitted that while weaslyXgranger was the original plan, she forgot about it until the last couple years of working on the series when she hunted up her original outline for how the series would end. regardless after seeing this first page layout it is clear that this is something i have wanted for a looong, time but did not realize i wanted it until now.

So far as I know, the hookups for Harry were Ginny(ron's sister) Cho, and a lot of fans wanted to see Luna have a shot at him, but it likely is at best a one shot. But for Ron and Hermoine, for a lot of people, that never seemed to really work out. Oh... who was the one Ron was snogging during the party?
