Bisexuality is so cool and beautiful! As a certified dyke my opinion of bi women is always we should be hand in hand if not kissing straight on the lips :P

Bestlaf

I'll have to miss the Première unfortunately. Have fun everyone!

Verity Ritchie

Sure is! I cover 4 bi-themed reality shows, beginning with her shit show!

Vince Whitacre

Won't be the same without Bestlaf though ☹

Ghosts And You Might Die

I am excited!! This is exactly what I want, on a Friday of a miserable week, amidst the chaos and awfulness of the world, thank you for this well-timed gift. 🙏 Literally rubbed my hands together in gleeful anticipation when I saw the screencap. 😼

Verity Ritchie

I hope it helps distract for a while from all the chaos! This is 90 minutes long, so a good long while!

Thanks so much for talking about Brooke's season of the Bachelorette! I'm a fan of the franchise and I've seen such little queer media analysis of it. I've thought so much about it and its representation of bisexuality and it was great to hear someone else voice some of it. Just some errant Australian bi thoughts: - The Australian Bachelor/ette franchise is incredibly boring because it positions itself as 'wholesome' reality TV about the fantasy of true love. It always leans away from anything tawdry and I think that's a big part of why it has been losing ratings at astronomical rates well before having a bisexual season. I personally find the blandness part of the charm though, and myself and my housemates watch religiously, gasping at each chaste kiss and boring revelation. - I think Brooke is best described as a women who happens to be bi rather than a bi activist. She's spoken a lot about the pressures of representing bisexuality on the show and you really see it in the thought that went into it in all the over-explained teaching moments, but I suspect that she herself was not that well-positioned to consider the importance of including gender non-conforming people or trans people or bisexual men on the show. At least in my years of following her she has sort of tripped over a lot of conversations about gender and bisexuality (her season as a contestant being one of the more notable instances). That combined with what seems like a clear decision on the network's part to play it safe leaves the contestant line-up so very conventional. - Holy shit, the biphobia in the response from fans was bad. I had to actively unplug to avoid seeing the floods of comments from lesbian fans who were so very disappointed in her. It sucked.

I would be surprised if Brooke had had all that much say in the contestant line up at all! They had to be a surprise to her after all. I would've thought it would be the producers deciding on the bland line up. Brooke clearly did her best with the situation, but ultimately the producers are the bosses, and it looks as if they had a vision. I don't blame Brooke for anything we criticised in the video, she seems like she was really trying to do her best!

This is an excellent video, and I can't imagine the amount of time you put into it! Also, I just wanted to point out that your efforts of upping your production value are not going unnoticed. The better sound, the better picture, the better backdrop, everything looks and sounds super sharp! Hope the new chair is also helping :)

Verity Ritchie

Thank you, Asaf! Its cause of you lot that I'm able to up my game! <3

This was such a good video! Would be really interested to get your take on how the bisexual storyline on the first series of Love is Blind was handled. Saw it the other day having watched your video and it made me think about a lot of what you discussed. The gist is that there's a bisexual guy (Carlton) who doesn't want to tell his fiancée that he's had relationships with men in the past for fear that she'll reject him. Due to the nature of the show, everything is both very traditional and very intense with people saying 'I love you' and proposing sight unseen after knowing each other for only a few days. Once the couples get engaged, the fact he hasn't told her is framed as 'he has committed his life to this woman without being honest about who he really is.' Note: they have known each other for 5 days at this point. It's all handled very poorly. His bisexuality is mostly treated as an earth-shattering secret that he's hiding from his unsuspecting future wife. His appearance on the show is framed as him making a choice to be with a woman in a 'real' relationship and his background as a preacher's son is highlighted in relation to this - further enforcing the idea that this choice is the moral one. Spoilers but, not surprisingly, it all ends in tears. Overall, it was a pretty miserable watch so feel free to avoid like the proverbial if you've had it with ill-advised bi representation in reality TV but, nonetheless, would be interested to hear your thoughts. That aside, the video looks great and can't wait to see what you cover next. Thanks! x

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Catriona! We considered talking about Carlton in this video, as we had seen Love is Blind, but our video was already so long, it seemed like it wouldn't fit. Carlton's story is really stressful! I think Carlton was so deeply frightened of the biphobia he might have faced from his bride that he went on the offensive right away and couldn't manage talking to her about it. He was a huge arsehole, imho, but I understand that that came from a place of fear and insecurity. I think it was a horrible situation for him to be in, it was all very sad. I think if he had told her in the pods, it would've been better however...I don't think she would've married him. I think she was seen as the hero in the end and he became the villain, but lets be real, what are the chances she would've accepted his bisexuality from day one, ya know? Maybe I'm being judgemental, but I didn't get the impression that she was a bi-friendly person when I watched it (which granted was like a year ago).

Catriona Lexy

Yeah, poor Carlton didn't cover himself in glory by any means. Being open from the beginning would've been the best bet but the isolation and the pressure of the situation undoubtedly got to him. And, aye, didn't seem like the bride would've been very open to a bisexual husband based on her reaction, regardless of when she was told. Maybe if there was more support on the show - like one of those 'relationship counsellors' that they wheel out on other dating shows - there might've been a better outcome or a more substantial conversation had but that might be asking too much from Love is Blind! :) Thanks so much for your reply!
