00s Bisexual Chic

Were emos bisexual? What was up with Madonna and Britney? Was it queerbaiting? Was it just a coincidence that this video dropped the same week as My Chemical Romance's new song? All this and more! Video by Ada Černoša and Verity Ritchie! An appendix video will be uploaded to Patreon in a week or so, if you wanna join us over there! http://patreon.com/verityritchie https://twitter.com/verilybitchie https://www.instagram.com/verityritchie/ Buy my book Hugged as a paperback or PDF on my Etsy! https://www.etsy.com/shop/VerityRitchie

Exciting! I was 13 most of 2000, so this will take me back. I also was the same age as Harry Potter when the first few books came out. :D

Yeah! I'll try to make it but I still have to convince my partner ^^ How long will the video roughly be? Her English is not as good as mine so this will enter the bargaining :p

My shift at work starts at exactly that time 😭😭😭 but I will certainly watch later tonight when I get home, so excited!!!

I am curious about whether the pop punk/emo scene coming under fire for being not only misogynist but allegedly actively predatory (between Pete Wentz dating a 15 year old when he was in his 20s and PATD having to oust one of their longtime security personnel due to accusations of sexual misconduct) will feature in the appendix; it's a rough subject and idk if it's specifically relevant to the discussion of bisexuality in the emo scene but it is one of the factors that makes that time period and subculture hard to revisit as a former fan

Any group of that many men, especially ones who become rich and powerful -- if we hadn't heard about those things, we could be sure there was someone we hadn't heard of. At least that's how I think of it. Someone who was ousted, and someone who moved towards more age-appropriate partners over time rather than less, is pretty good for a music scene if that's all there is.

@Tegan--I mean, I agree with you that comparatively it's not as bad as it could be (though I wouldn't say the two examples I gave are 'all there is'--just what had an impact on me that I remembered off the top of my head), but it's still bad! With Wentz in particular, of course I'm glad that it's not a trend of predatory behavior, but their relationship did a lot of damage to *her* and that affects my relationship to the music.

This video is everything! I was one of those girls who didn't think I could possibly be bisexual in the 90s/2000s, because bisexuality was fake/performative. (The image of Tatu kissing is just seared into my brain, my greatest fear as a teen was being a 'poser'). Even though I was attracted to girls I thought that was just, like, nothing special (like Kurt Cobain said, "everyone is gay") and I actually convinced myself that I was straight because I was into guys. There just wasn't any other model for me in late 90s suburban midwestern USA. I still clearly have a lot of baggage about this because this video made me cry! It's really good.

Can you explain what is gender not conforming in more detail.

Verity Ritchie

Gender nonconforming is generally considered to be someone whose gender expression (like they're style, their mannerisms) don't conform to the traditional expectations of their own gender. So a woman who is very masculine would be considered gender nonconforming and a man who is very feminine would also.
