Come drop by for the premiere if you can! I know something like Doctor Who can seem super niche, but we've done our best to make this video enjoyable for those who don't watch the show. All you need to know is that there is a time machine which looks like a small wooden box on the outside and is very big on the inside. There, you're an expert now! Enjoy! 😁

We are working on an appendix video just for the Patreon; we had two ideas for this video which kept pushing and pulling the script in different directions until we finally decided its best to just make it into two videos!

2026-09-14 11:00 I think you get at the whole thing with Chibnall way beyond gender roles. Like, he's a very smart producer who wants to move the show forward in producer ways, but he can't imagine anything. Zero imagination. I always feel like it's because he started out in production and admin roles before moving into writing.

Brilliant brilliant, I love your perspective on Doctor Who and thank you for putting together so eloquently everything that was so aggravating about Moffat Who. I first started following your work on YouTube with your Doctor Who videos and I’m so happy you’re doing more, thank you so much this was very interesting, especially the interview excerpts of the former companions actresses (since I don’t know a lot about classic!Who). Romana really intrigues me, I would love to see her or a character like her written by Davies

The Mad Jay Woman

Really enjoyed it (I’ll leave more comments on YouTube to drive them engagements) Can’t wait for the Sherlock follow up

Ohhhh! So grand! So proud to be a patron! Seriously!!!

Thank you for a great video! I also loved your earlier analysis of Davies' work and I love how you build on it in your analysis of the Dr Who - Companion analysis. As a transfem bisexual academic working in a positivist research area I really appreciate learning from you about academic topics I have little knowledge of. Thank you for your content. Lots of love and kindest regards, Alexa.

I think he does have some really interesting ideas occasionally, but I think that he, like Moffat, doesn't know how to make those ideas "emotionally real" as Davies puts it.

Thank you, Sevenswells! I have come a long way over the years, and its nice to be able to really apply the video essay-ing skills to Doctor Who! Romana is great fun! Both of her!

Thank you for making it possible that I can finally send my brother one video that explains my problem with Steven Moffat so well in a way I was never able to articulate. All I knew was that I hated all these comments who said that they prefered Clara as a companion instead of Rose "because she was hotter". And an appendix to Irene Adler!! :D Excited to get constructive criticism for my favourite character in the BBC Sherlock world! ^^

Kira

Thank you for this!! So many good points.

I am glad we got that video on DrWho from you, thank you very much for your effort. I always felt uncomfortable about the way Amy and Clara are portraied, and I couldn't really connect to River Song. After watching TheLesbianGaze I was looking forward to hear your reflections on Moffats era of Doctor Who. Most of the Who-fans I talked to IRL liked Amy most as a compagnion aguing that Moffats women are feminists, more active and confident of their sexuality. At least I understand now why this view makes me feel uncomfortable.

Verity Ritchie

It's very interesting that some people see Moffat companions as so feminist. I think it's maybe because you get these sort of "girl power" moments, almost as if Moffat is telling the audience explicitly that these women are feminist, and some people seem to find that surprisingly convincing.

Watching this reminds me a lot of Joss Whedon and his famous fall from grace. Look it's great you (Joss to be clear) don't want all women to perform sex acts on command and serve you tea but wanting all women to be able to kick your ass with their sexy sexy feet isn't really much better.

Verity Ritchie

Yeah I agree, though to be fair, I've never heard of Moffat being a huge arsehole to people he worked with like Whedon, I think Moffat is less of an arse and just...horny and ignorant!

Simon Patience

I wonder if Moffat was forever ensorcelled by Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct - he would’ve been quite young when that came out.

Verity Ritchie

Well...he would've been in his 30s... Is 30s young? 🥺 Let's say 30s is young still!

Revisiting this video as it's one of my faves and having the thought that Classic Who was really getting somewhere on this front at the time of its cancellation, and RTD had the insight to pick up and expand where they left off. Maybe the show's decline gave it a bit more freedom to slip new ideas in -- some more successful than others, but sometimes with cool results. Not only did they get a ton of a deeply unsubtle queercoding and more brazen political commentary (hello hammer and sickle) through the censors, but Ace honestly feels like a complete departure from the old trend in all the ways she's so wonderfully gender-nonconforming. And she's arguably the prototype for Rose (a companion who gets a full backstory and arc that matter for the drama of the season, a working class teen who experiences growth and even teaches the doctor something during her time in the tardis) and maybe for Jack, too (chaos bicon of a companion who makes a new "friend" every episode). Hell, 10 is kind of like "what if 7, but twink?" I have the kind of love for that era of the show that I have for Torchwood -- so much that's great and uniquely subversive alongside the bizarre and problematic. I can't help but feel they were so close to a big breakthrough, and I'm glad that breakthrough came eventually (if only to be bowled over by the Moffat era).
