Ahoy lovely Patrons! Since we returned from Australia it's been pretty full on making sure that all our ideas and thoughts are incorporated into the new design. We made this video to show you our thought process and some of the modifications we've made so far. Hope you enjoy and please comment below on your thoughts!

Hoping you are going to set aside space for the transfer of the "Delos Wall of Fame" photo's? I'd suggest the ceiling of the saloon as it gives space for more pictures.

Rusty Comer

Looks absolutely Aamazing!! I’m truly excited for you guys! You might want to consider designing in some kind of passerelle system at the back of the boat for all those places that require med-mooring. Cheers!!

Ashley Simms

Love the new boat plans! So much fun to watch the process.

Ghostship

Love it! I Capt on catamarans and often look at how much rain runs from the roof, so when you said “rain catchment” I was smiling

Rick Mann

Wow, I missed this news! Congrats!

Rick Mann

If it's still early enough in the process, I'd like to discourage you from a parallel hybrid approach, and encourage a series hybrid: electric motors, batteries, and genset. Far less mechanical complexity, more modular, easier to maintain, and likely more efficient.

Mattias Persson

Nate See

Very nice, love it! Couple of thoughts... Love the rain catching system... curious, what will you do if/when it's completely filled in a big storm? I assume there's a runoff somewhere so it doesn't overflow into undesirable spots? What about adding a few trolling pole holders in the back? Zatara had a large custom shade cover cut for the center/bow of their cat. They seem to love it... might consider how a large shade could be integrated beforehand?

Israel Dayan

Availability to open the window in front of the helm , to have eye contact , and hearing the one who handling the anchor in the front, for better communication . 🪟☸️⚓

Michael Nathaniel

So incredibly excited for you!!! Can’t wait to see the finished product and the first bit of sailing you do in Delos 2.0!! Congratulations! My family and I will be watching every step of the way.

Anne West

how do you move the traveler?

Sadie Johnson

“What would I want on a boat?” Answer: a dog. Maybe I watch too much Parlay and have fantasized for too long about cruising around with my dog. But that looks like a great place for Sierra to have a dog! Also, please make LOTS of nerdy videos about the parallel/hybrid electric-generator powering!! I first heard about this idea a few months ago and have spent way too much time thinking about it!

Carol and Greg Gegner

If you can, over the props put a hatch so you can have easy access to view/remove lines from a prop.

Benjamin Valyou

I think it would be worthwhile to double check the torque from Maggy supported by that rear roof segment. Probably fine but raised our eyebrows a bit. Looking great!

Anne West

will the extra weight of the extended roof over the stern of the boat affect the sailability?

Tim S

Hey Guys. Very exciting. The outdoor sink and grill is a must. I use mine all the time. Think of the heat you aren't putting inside! My Seawind has a grill that raises up with shock arm assist so it can stow neatly, but get high enough to exhaust the heat put if the cabinet when cooking. I doubt you will add propane back, but a nice flattop electric would be perfect. I only wish I had more counter space to filet those bigger fish easier. You might want to consider what kind of hand rails/grabs are incorporated into the roof edge. There are times you may want to hold on moving fore and aft. Also, build padeyes into the bow corners. You may want to get creative with downwind sail rigging with that wide beam. Cheers.

Anne West

where does the dinghy go?

Tim S
>>129200791

And a tuna door on the side comes in big handy when at a side tie dock!

Juan David

Excellent adjustments. If you could provide the model I work in Virtual Prototyping and can let you guys look at it in VR. That way you can really immerse yourself in it and look at the design at scale and get a good sense of the changes and how they work and function in practice. Don’t mind signing an NDA as I know the builder may be reluctant to share the models with a 3rd party. Message me if interested.

Juan David
>>129199046

Not sure where you will put it with all the windows around the living area. I think it’s time for the wall of shame/fame to find a new home. Perhaps online and actually be able to get the story behind the picture.

Troy Sublett

Love the changes! Very nice! Let us know when you are going to get into the electronics, lighting etc. We will nerd out with you!! We will be waiting!

Frank

I thought about a cat design but realized I would miss the rocking motion fore to aft of the boat at anchor.

Joan Peterson

Is that thing actually safe in the crazy, unpredictability of the open ocean? No appeal in appearance either, especially side by side with your beautiful, sleek and sexy Amel. Just not fans of this change.

Pete Gasson

outside beer fridge is a must and a designated area for the still and Nuggets bike

jpiland73

Something to consider, a gray water system. You collect water from your shower and sinks in the bathroom and use the water for your toilets and deck/anchor wash. It is a simple system that does not require any filtering but saves a lot of fresh water just for non potable uses. This would allow for fresh heads as well instead of saltwater heads. Also, I love the design changes that you guys have made. I can't wait to see it on the water!

Dan Moss

Such a cool update. Curious if you designed-in any built in camera mounting systems?

Sailing SV Delos
>>129223884

I’ve been dreaming up a cool dolphin cam setup at the bow. like on a track we can raise and lower real easy. maybe a keel cam would be fine too. we’ll see….

Sailing SV Delos
>>129216534

The sister ship did a circumnavigation covering about similar route to ours. I spoke to the owners and a few that crewed on her and they had positive remarks. Right now she is on 2 nd circumnavigation…. This hull is an updated design with some improvements so our thinking is she should be as capable as her pedigree suggests. It will be different for sure but I think change is good 😊

Sailing SV Delos
>>129216285

Oh she’ll rock to and fro I bet…. But sitting here in a rolly anchorage in the Marquesas as I type this I think its the rolling side to side I can live without!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129212555

Hey Juan that is awesome! I can view the model on Rhino and its pretty cool but I’d love to connect and see what sort of cool walkthroughs we could come up with for the vids and such. Lemme get the design changes in a good place and let you know. David will definitely want an NDA but we already have one so easy. I’ll be in touch in a few weeks ⛵️👍

Sailing SV Delos
>>129208325

Hey Tim, yes absolutely very wise words. Noted and thanks for the suggestions. PS- Might revert back to propane for outside grill so we have a fallback should all electrical crap out. Maybe with a burner or two just in case? On Delos we carry a camping stove for this reason.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129207034

According to David the designer structure is lighter than it looks since it’s aluminum, kind of designed like an airplane wing really. Light and strong. Overall weight will be fine but we may need to move our batteries a little further forward for balance. We will see!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129206632

Yeah, I spec’d it out to have the same rating as davits so on paper it looks good. But real life is different so we will see. The structure is similar to an airplane really, but only more rigid. It will be a cool moment to measure flex when hoisting for the first time 😉

Sailing SV Delos
>>129205332

I think I’d like to have a similar system to what we have on Delos. It’s basically a continuous line with blocks at either side of the traveler that is moved back and forth in either direction. Search on Anderson Line Tender for an image. I would just run the loop to the cockpit. Thats the plan anyway 🙌

Michael Williams

Of all the things that stand out to me, it is the difference between a wider captain's cabin-berth with a mono hull and the narrow cabins with the cat. Unless moving the closet space forward to the ladder improves the elbow room dramatically?

Katie Litchfield

Is Maggie’s platform going to be hydraulic? That is one thing I’ve always found appealing on larger cats- the concept of a true water-level platform seems both ultra luxurious and practical. The outdoor kitchen is fantastic, but the dive storage area facing Maggie’s platform? *chefs kiss* I truly appreciate the re-arrangement of the kitchen. It seemed like there was so much “wasted” square footage in the original design. The breakfast bar setup is a winning option. In the “kids cabin” is there potential for an extra fold-down upper berth? Perhaps making one of the two Berths tuck away to become desk space of some sort? I can see a potential future desire for teenage-type hangout space. It is so nice to see you both looking so positively excited about this project! Even with all the challenges you know it is bringing- you seem to be brimming with joy. 💙

David Gray

Hi guys! The design looks awesome! The only thing I thought of are the ports on the roof of the saloon. Are you able to see the main sail well enough? Have you thought about running Acrylic Plexyglass down the center with ports that you open for ventilation?

Krystal Couture

it looks like it will be a beautiful and functional boat!

Skip Vail

Love it and your ideas. I too thought about a rain catchment system and of course bar/beer fridge with commercial grade blenders! I am sure Brian thought about this next one; engines, generator, transmissions & compressor room access so they are all easy to work on , parts and tool storage area with a workbench and the ability to get to all systems with hatches large enough so that you can pull and replace any of them if need be without cutting any holes! On my own trawler I have to be a double jointed bilge monkey to get to the starboard side of my diesel....and if I have a leg cramp or worse I am in deep trouble down in there! Thanks so much for sharing this process, it is fascinating for us grease monkeys!

Mark Gumprecht

Love the changes you made! I like that the dinghy will sit on the deck when traveling, and not hanging from davits. The outside galley will be great, especially on hot days. One question is the mainsail reefing. These big, full batten mains can be hard to handle. I love that Kaza could reef the sail on watch at night by herself, without leaving the wheel. Brian’s ultimate chance to nerd out!

Tim S
>>129208325

Not a bad plan. I carry and induction burner for the backup to my propane... my grill is a flattop propane. It's great for just about everything from pancakes and bacon to grilled mahi. And there's less flame up risk...

Tim S

One more thought. Stern anchor points for a drouge bridle. The cleats might work, but if you have to use a drouge in big following seas, you might want a beefier attachment point, as wide as possible. For a cat, that's one of the safest ways to ride a storm at sea, but the boat needs to be rigged for it.

Tim S
>>129205332

Check out the line drivers at Antal.it. I have this setup for my traveller, it works well and keeps it all very neat.

Erik Adler

inside helm is nice, but how do you enjoy lovely weather at an outside helm. to me one of the joys of sailing is a beautiful day at the helm... (with lots of sunscreen and a hat). Perhaps a dual helm!

Michael Zimmer

An outdoor shower would be super convenient.

Kent Yrjas

Holy Mother of the sea 😀 I love the new design of your boat 😍

Mark Thompson

Wonderful thoughtful design! Question: What is the helm seat like? Room for a nice comfy captains chair?

Michael Wilke

Lot‘s of brilliant ideas went into these design changes. I havbe a 49‘ Aluminium Monohull and some installations that need lots of attention (fuel filters, V-belts, electrical systems) are hard to reach because of > 30 years of constant boat „updates“. I think if you plan two „technical compartments“ in each hull where you can comfortably work on all installations that should be a huge improvements. a new build allows you minimizing the need for boat yoga, you know what I mean :-)

Veronique & Jim Tetlow

Looks amazing and love all your changes and tweaks so far. Can't wait for more updates about everything else. One essential for us would be to have enough space for all the diving gear at the back of the boat (is it where you plan to store yours, where the tanks are on the render?) One idea: a heated hanging locker for the wet/foul weather gear and to hang the diving gear while drying/before storing.

Robin Henkys

What you’ve planned looks smart, and other people have better input on all the nitty gritty stuff needed on a boat, I can offer a big picture question: have you guys already thought about where you will primarily hang out and how you’ll make it cozy? I get a lot of functionality vibes from the design, but I have a hard time imagining people in there. In my mind its going to be very dark, compared to the outside world, under that roof. And you’re surrounded by a lot of metal. Also in terms of your youtube channel I feel that the cockpit of Delos always offered the visuals of a sailing adventure, with little specs of light and shadows on people and details from all the little lines, backlit canvas etc. Maybe theres a way to get sunlight in the back in a controlled way as desired? Make some elements only from semi-opaque materials rather than the 100% opaque aluminium? Might also be worth thinking about the materials other than the aluminium in general, since they’re going to contribute a lot to the coziness of your home. Anyways, as usual I have full confidence in you guys that you’ll do great, hope I could inspire some constructive thought!

Mark Masuhr

Love the design as revised, especially as Delos 2.0 is envisioned to be a true voyaging boat not a "anchor each night" near shore cruiser. Couple questions, observations, the renderings you shared don't show any mainsail or foresail sheet winches or headsail furling winches. What are your plans with regard to them given the forward halyard (and reef line) handling station? Also are you considering rigging the mainsail to permit down wind reefing without the need to head up, especially since the forward halyard station/cockpit will be more exposed to breaking seas than a traditional rear/ center cockpit. Or are you envisioning so sort of windscreen for that area? Looking forward to Delos 2.0 future evolution.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129199046

I think we can hash out some ideas. It's such a cool thing for people to see when they first walk in. I'd probably want to preserve all the old ones that are fading in a book somewhere though and maybe start fresh? thanks for your thoughts.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129200791

Yeah Rusty, that's a great idea. On Delos the swim ladder and passerelle are combined into one which I always thought was very clever. It's even made out of alumininum so I can probably base it off a similar design. Thanks for your thoughts!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129202021

Hey Rick, Interesting.... I did consider a series hybrid but here are my thoughts. Sort of rough and in no particular order... I actually think the parallel hybrid will be more efficient when motoring long distances. For example when you go from Mechanical -> Electrical (generator) -> Motor (electric) -> Mechanical there is a bit of loss. I think I remember it being 12-15% depending on the efficiency of the generator and the electric motor. So I felt if you are going to run the diesel for long range, then why not just hook it right up to the shaft in a traditional way and get the same efficiency. Also if you think about it how reliable our diesel has been on Delos the thing just runs and runs and is very dependable. So my thoughts are having that system in parallel with the electric motor allows us to do a few different things. We can be a totally electric boat (no diesel and run off batteries), totally diesel (just run off one diesel engine), or we can divert excess mechanical energy from the diesel to the electric motor and spin it as a generator to charge batteries or power the fully electric hull. I think it's a topic worthy of an entire video so if you have any other info I'd love to hear it and maybe incorporate it when I film that? Either way it's a super cool system and I'm having a lot of fun researching it :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129204899

Hey Nate, Yeah man with that much surface area we're going to have to have an overflow somewhere..... And YES I was thinking of welding in some custom mounts for rod holders and hand lines on the back. That with the fish fillet station back there should be sweet!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129205148

Hey Israel, yes absolutely good thinking! I think the big on in front of the helm and also the large one above the galley sink. I have seen them with gas struts and it works pretty good.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129208997

Hey Anne- When we're at anchor we can leave it suspended off the blocks on the roof, sort of like davits. But when we go to sea we'll lower it down onto the platform and lash it down. The bottom of the platform is integrated into the underbody struts so incredibly strong and the same height as the bridgedeck so it should be as out of the waves as possible.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129229645

Hey Michael- Yeah man that's a definite tradeoff. Our cabin on Delos is actually pretty spacious. But on the cat hull we are limited to 1.6 meters overall, probably less once we have insulation and everything. It is possible to widen it but then I feel the hull shape starts to bulge out and takes away from the sleekness. Always a tradeoff!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129233384

Hey Katie, you have some great thoughts there! We really debated having the platform raise and lower, and even took a look at the one on our friends Lagoon 50. He said that it has broken a few times and the boat is pretty new. He also said it was pretty heavy.... So we opted to just have the platform fixed and instead lift and lower Maggie onto it. We still have some fairly decent sized swim platforms on the hulls so getting into and out of the water should be ok. Not quite the same as a giant lowering platform though..... :). Yes, there is absolutely two bunks in the kids room. One lower and one upper. I think we'll get a feeling for the space after she's built and see which one we want to be permanent vs. folding. But yes, definitely a hangout for Sierra and her sailor kid buddies :). Thanks for your support and sending lots of good vibes your way!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129240643

Hey David- Good thoughts! Well we don't know just yet.... We think they are in the right place but won't really know until she's built and we have the rig up and can really check out site lines. I've asked for all the hatches and windows to be marked (rather than CNC cut) so we can verify placement for everything before we cut them out.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129246849

Yeah Skip, I feel you man! Lot's of thoughts going into the layout of things. It's so nice I get to be part of the build from the very beginning, that way I can start running and planning all the systems. Super cool and very excited!

Sailing SV Delos
>>129248754

Hey Mark, Thanks for your positive words. It think it's going to be super cool :)Yeah we haven't made it that far in the rig design yet. There are two mast designers in Australia and I was going to contact Seldon as well. We also shared that concern about reefing that gigantic main sail. We really want Kazza to be able to do it herself just like on Delos :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129267376

Hey Erik, Yeah It will be different for sure. I'm just thinking of our passages and how we often sit at the "helm" but very rarely actually steer with the helm. it will be interesting to see if it feels like we're separated from the elements too much, or if the openness of the windows to the forward cockpit will provide that feeling. I think it's just one of those things we're going to have to experience. It would be possible to put a helm outside with the steering system I have chosen so I know it is possible :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129268443

Yes definitely! We were on our friends HH 55 a few weeks ago and they had one in the aft cockpit and used it all the time. I'm thinking we can put ours over the aft platform maybe? Should be cool :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129279594

Oh most definitely. Probably one that swivels around and let's me kick back and put my feet up without killing my back :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129320059

Hey yes or at the very least ventilated with a fan. The aft bulwark is 600 mm wide and 2.3 meters long so we have space set aside for the tanks, compressor, BCD's, etc. So I think it will be enough. We'll also have doors on the aft cockpit side so gear can be put in or taken out from either side. That's a great idea about a ventilated/heated locker for foulies and maybe even dive gear. I'll note that down. Probably with direct access to outside so we don't have to drag wet gear inside....

Veronique & Jim Tetlow
>>129320059

Yes, direct access to outside would be ideal. A bit like the space for your tanks/compressor etc, maybe a two-way (inside/outside) opening would be useful. You could gear up when dry inside but put it in the locker when wet from outside. I'm sure you'll figure something out 😜

Mark Gumprecht
>>129248754

Hey Brian, I’m not sure how it would look, but since you put that strong attachment point on the roof for traveler, what about making the boom longer to gain sail area you lose from the triangle shaped sail when you have in the mast furling. You wouldn’t want the foot of the sail that long with a conventional sail, but it wouldn’t matter with a furling sail.

David Gray
>>129240643

Awesome! I just didn't want you to over look something like that. We humans seem to only look in a straight line around us but seldom up.

Mr. Bigg

MR. BIGG: LOOK at the joy on your faces! Im smiling there with you! SO FREEKING COOL! You will have so much more breathing space for you two and also, and MOST importantly, Sierra and her little sis/bro (LOL)! My only question is about when you want to dock Delos 2....longer/wider? I assume there will be a cost impact as well as less places that can accomodate the longer/wider vessle! Im really pleased as you will have more room to have me over for a beer one afternoon! LOL. Thinking of you guys! FAIR WINDS!

Chris Marchi

Do you guys use Starlink for your internet while at sea?

Samuel Thumblebee

In case the outside galley will be a gas stove, i assume that the heat will get blown away unless there is some windshield of some sort.

Sailing SV Delos
>>129267376

I'm thinking remote throttles? Every friend I've spoken to says they never use the wheel at all for maneuvering, it's always just using the throttles to pivot around in close quarters. Lot's to learn for me!!!! :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129320917

That's a very interesting comment Robin. You are correct, the design so far for the structure has been purely focused on functionality, IE nailing the specs and structure. But very little thought has been put into the coziness of the interior from a design perspective. Kazza and I actually did a little brainstorming the other day just what about makes us feel cozy about the arrangement on Delos. How the use of wood and textured materials blends together to make it feel like a home, rather than an ultra modern furniture showroom. I think that is a trend in modern boat design that we don't necessarily feel like we need to replicate, although the current renders are basically just that! It will be interesting now that we are happy with the structure and shell to start doing some design work on the interior elements. So much to do, and all very exciting! Stay tuned as we'd love to have your input when we start putting thought into this.

Ben Jamin'

Any safety gates on the aft deck to keep the nugget "contained"?

Sailing SV Delos
>>129354714

Ahoy Mark! thanks for your kind words, yes she should be a go-anywhere for a long time off the grid sort of boat, definitely not a harbor queen :). Actually most of the details regarding the sail plan and rigging are not shown on those renders. They are all on separate 2D drawings that specify all the blocks, where the sheets and halyards run, winch sizes, etc. It's actually quite well specified but there are some tweaks I still need to make here. I went down a rabbit hole the other night of doing research into different furling systems. One of the things we absolutely love on Delos is the ability to furl from the cockpit in nearly any condition without going on deck. This is made possible by the in mast furling which has worked spectacular for us. However, a cat gets a lot of power from it's main sail so a low-roach in mast furling sail probably wouldn't be the best option. I was researching boom furlers and still have a lot to learn about these. I have heard both positive and negative things. I suspect that this is another entire topic for a video as I'm sure we'll get lot's of good information from everyone out there once we start posting! But it's really fascinating to learn about and I'm having a blast :)

Sailing SV Delos
>>129427102

Ahoy MR. BIGG! Thanks for your kind words :). The additional space will be nice for sure, but of course it always has a tradeoff. Delos 2.0 is also the same length as Delos (53', 16 meters) but will be about 3 meters (almost 10 feet) wider. From what I have experienced is that catamaran slips are usually 1.5x a similar sized mono hull slip so there definitely is a premium. Of course this is not always the case but if you take up 2 slips you can expect to pay a little more. Actually though if. you consider we very rarely go to docks it shouldn't be that much of a hit on our budget. The last time we were at a dock was almost 1.5 years ago for my circumnavigation party. Thanks for the support and looking forward to that cold one if we can cross paths!

Hey Chris- Yes we sure do! Since we're all over the place we use the Global Roaming Plan. It costs $250 per month and gives us unlimited data in port, and 50GB of data on the open ocean. If we need more open ocean data we just flip a switch in the app and pay $2.00 per GB extra, which is plenty for downloading podcasts and checking weather. So far it's worked great for us! Cheers- Brian

Ahoy Samuel, yes I think you are correct it happened on our old Magma and gave me fits. Just when I thought it was time to pop the burgers on the grill would be cold from a gust of wind blowing it out..... But then again gas is a good backup for the induction cooking should our electrical system fail. So I will see how it works and if necessary conjur up some sort of a shield. Thanks for the support and sending good vibes your way!

>>129267376

True. Cats are a different beast. Fun to motor... you can drive it like a tank! Spin on a dime. Just wait till you're doing donuts in a marina 🤪

Rick Mann
>>129501120

In the video they're using bifacial panels, which would not help in your case (panels laminated onto the side of a hull). But what's interesting is that the vertical panels have two advantages: better capture of early and late sun, and because they're vertical, they tend to be cooler than horizontal panels, which makes for slightly better conversion efficiency. I think in the context of a boat, it may be an opportunity for more solar power, which in a hybrid or electric-drive boat can reduce you dependence on diesel.

Rick Mann
>>129202021

It will depend greatly on what the mechanical coupling involves. Transmissions are, in general, like 60% efficient (I think). At least a couple of advantages I see to the series hybrids: • Modular: You can easily replace components (like the motor, drive electronics, batteries, charging, DC-DC converters, genset) because the interfaces between them are fairly simple and easy to adapt: wires. • Generator can run at its optimum speed an efficiency, whereas in a direct-drive diesel, you have to adjust the throttle to adjust the output, resulting in a much wider range of efficiencies, rather than always being at the optimal. • Generally, well-designed electronics rarely break down or wear out. They're virtually silent and vibration-free, requiring only cooling (which any combustion engine will also require). I went to Finland and go to visit Night Train (alas, only on the hard, as it was winter), an aluminum 57' monohull with series hybrid drive. https://oceanvolt.com/testimonials/swan-5557-cc-sy-night-train/ The owner Johan is very nice and would likely be eager to share his thoughts and experiences with you. Let me know if you’d like me to reach out on your behalf.

CATHERINE HACKETT

I was looking at that huge roof and thinking rain catchment and then you showed it. Cool! Love the outddor galley and how you redid the indoor one.

Lance Daniels

I am I'm not the only one who is wondering where the wall of shame/fame will be incorporated...

Carol

Hi I have just joined after watching your new post on YouTube. I love the plans for a go-anywhere Cat. One thing I have noticed about Catamarans is that you spend a lot of time forward while at anchor. It always has a breeze and the views can be epic. Have you considered lounging (with sundowner) options for Delos 2.0? Maybe built-in seating like on the seawind 1370? You know the important questions … ;) Can’t wait to see the evolution of Delos 2.0, I am so happy for all 3 of you.

JK

agree on the lounging forward. Being a remote worker for years, maybe a desk desk set up in the owners cabin. Create space from the living area to create all these amazing videos!
