Our baby boys Jules (maybe 5?) and Jasper (maybe 11?) playing a lil board game! I've thought long and hard *giggle* about when to say more about their backstory but honestly.. there isn't one. I purposely want to leave them vague for the sake of horror villains everywhere, I LOVE when bad guys don't have a ton of overly-explained backstory.

Here's all I know about them (nothing spoil-worthy):

Both their parents were surgeons. Mom died when they were kids, dad died when they were in their twenties. Jasper became a trauma surgeon and Jules became a plastic surgeon before they gave it all up to do their own black market experimental shit "enhancing" the human body, soon culminating in a weird little underground circus project.

The end! The rest is up to the reader. Should they be sympathized with cuz maybe their parents pressured them into the medical field then died, leaving them to mentally downward spiral? Or should they be hated for going into careers of helping people only to get god complexes and treat humans like lab rats? I dunno! All I know for a fact is Jasper is emotionally stunted and Jules is a theater kid with a great stache and a weird erotic love for the things he creates (sexuality label experts help me out on that one lol)

I cant claim to be an expert at labelling things but in my headcanon I did image it would only be a few years later that after the a frog dissection class in biology that one their classmates/crushes mysteriously vanished when one of them wanted to experiment a little more.

As a theatre kid, I have classmates who are exactly like this lol

NOPE. Nope. Nope. In my head villains are born adults because I can’t handle the tragedy of kids who had no chance whatsoever of being normal. It’s confusing to hold sympathy and aversion at the same time. I also can’t handle horror. I’m such a softie. Interesting villains have a deranged moral compass, but they had choices and went down the wrong path. I love flashbacks that show turning points in a villains backstory but it makes me want to cry when they’re in childhood.

I’ve worked with a lot of docs. Most of them are assholes so it’s not a leap for them to become villians.

How interesting! I somewhat agree, we could always use flashbacks/tidbits of villain ‘motives’, horror or otherwise, explaining why they do what they do (but I don’t mind if its a psychological result of their upbringing). You can definitely take the route of J&J consciously choosing to be wackadoos! Possibly random but I thought of a good example of UUGH villain for me (that’s not horror!): that new Mufasa movie. Scar was such a cool bad guy in the original Lion King, no motive other than he wasn’t king and wanted to be. Then that movie comes along and turns out he was evil because he liked Mufasa’s chick or something? (haven’t seen the movie) Way to ruin the sinister side of him 😑

Redmari

Ha!! My sister (who I go to when there’s medical stuff I need to draw) was a surgical tech for a while and has said the same thing 😂

I’m legit SURPRISED when I work with a nice doctor. As a nurse, expecting a doc to be an asshole is my default.

Peach

Oh to clarify- I agree that we are all products of our upbringing and that can be an interesting angle for a villain, but when your home life is unbearably abusive I feel like- well what did you expect? No chance to rise above, no tragedy of “they could have been a hero if only they made a few different decisions” or the drama of “here’s where it all started” I do like the head cannon of them both being surgeons with god complexes so out of control they create the circus. Surgeons are pretty bossy I think. Way wore assholes in surgery than in pediatric clinic. But you’ll find assholes everywhere if you look long enough.

Redmari

I know it’s horror but Dr. Heiter from Human Centipede was a biiiig inspiration for the brothers. In the movie all we know is he was a well known surgeon for separating conjoined twins but then just decided to go the opposite route and fuse people together in his free time lol And that’s all we needed backstory-wise and I loved it! Leaves so much open room for discussions like these on morality and nature vs nurture

I know the cultural reference (thanks Tom Cardy!) but I don't think I can actually watch it. A book is so much easier to take a break from if it's too scary. Plus no jumpscare soundtrack! I probably could watch horror on mute.
