I'm looking for your feedback here, what did you think about our RTX 4070 review? Was I too easy on this product or fair?

Comments

Karl Kiss

Just right: Given the data and the current context, it seemed a fair conclusion. I think that we don’t like the current context which is why you may be given to feel you were too soft.

Lockstar64

I think you weighed it up fairly and explained your reasoning well. It's perhaps good for this era, but not so good overall, and certainly not ideal. It was a good video.

Corey Kast

I think you were a tad bit too soft. I get that the 4070 is good value compared to the rest of lovelace, but it barely competes with the value of last gen. It would be different if last gen were bad products. I only see the 4070 as being slightly above par, feature wise with last gen, and below par on performance (compared to 6950xt). The 4070 is basically a 6800XT for slightly more than current 6800XT prices and with 4GB less vram 2.5 years later. It's only saving graces is its power efficiency and DLSS.

hardwareunboxed

Fair enough, I certainly understand and appreciate that input.

Alexander Bailey

I was torn between just right or a tad too soft. I ended up voting too soft as it seems to me that without DLSS 3 game support the card just doesn’t show solid value compared to last gen offerings. I felt that the review was excellent and showed good comparisons and conclusions overall from the data sets.

Mark Lewin

Nvidia and to some extent AMD have really worn you guys down. This is going to end up the same price as the 6950xt, and we were hoping that we'd be looking at significantly better performance than that at this price point by now. And for as heavily as Nvidia has been leaning into ray tracing, I really would have expected better on that front.

The review was generally right on when focussing on the current state of the market, especially in comparison to current and last gen cards. What I don't think was portrayed as much is how the performance delta of this xx70 class card launch vs. previous generations of xx70 class cards. The 4070 broke about even with the 3080 (albeit at a much lower power usage), where as the 3070 was ~25% better than the 2080. Because Nvidia has artificially made the market worse by the insane pricing, it makes the 4070 not look as bad as it should. TLDR: I personally would have appreciated a little bit more focus on how the 4070 deviates from the performance increases that previous xx70 launches had.

tangofan

I agree with Corey. Calling the 4070 a 'good value' seems a bit of a stretch. It might be an 'okay value' or 'somewhat acceptable value' in a sea of bad to terrible value Nvidia cards, but 'good value' seems a tad too positive. I understand though I think where you're coming from, as this card does seem to be one of the few current options where buyers don't get crazily ripped off (only a little ripped off perhaps).

Mlke Lostracco

You guys were right on. I don't think you went too light either because you called them out for pushing raytracing but then not upping the VRAM on pricey cards. I can only speak for the US market though. Yeah, Nvidia raised prices. People are hung up on the name/class/bus etc. because they want a dirt cheap 4K card. Can’t blame them but the reality is that Inflation in the US is WAY more than the gov’t/press reported 9%. Our family of 4 is up over 25% on our grocery budget and that’s with my wife buying non name brands and dropping the “extra” things like candy and soda off the menu. It’s not realistic to think these companies are not going to raise their prices. I don’t like it either and wish they’d take a hit and meet the consumer half way on the price increase!! On the other hand, I don’t need to play above high 1080p and can stay with an RX6600 or a RTX3060. Plenty of other used cards for well under $400 to play at high settings/fps 1080p or even a mix of high/med for high refresh 1440p. I’m not defending any company out there and in my opinion both AMD and Nvidia played games with the 4080, 70ti, 7900xt and 7900xtx releases as far as prices go. Thanks for all the work you guys put in for us. I always enjoy the content even if my stubborn self doesn't always agree. You guys are honest and just give it to us the way you see it. Love it.

I think the thing is that at the end of the day. The 4070 is the same as a 6800xt, $50 cheaper despite being 2 years newer, and still has less vram than the 6800xt. It is not a good value product really, but it just seems that way compared to the absurd current gen lineup. Where you can buy a 3080 and 3070, for the price of a 4080...

Warren

Sure, the RTX 4070 is the same price as the 6950XT now, but based on HUB's charts, the AMD card consumes 200 more watts -- that's more than double! -- for at most 20% more perf at 4K. So does it -really- cost the same in the long run?

Warren

I voted 'too harsh' because the power consumption part was almost a throwaway footnote in your review. Being able to get 3080-ish performance for 140 watts less than a 3080, and in a smaller physical space, is kinda a big deal, isn't it? That's a savings of TWO entire 7800X3D's! Other reviewers (rightly) spent more time on this, giving consideration to how much electricity costs you'll save over the course of a few years of ownership and regular use. For anyone who wants to keep running costs (or heat) down, this card should be a no-brainer even with the higher MSRP.

Chris Hadsell

I just finished watching it--he was like Goldilocks says: "Just right!" I also saw the GN one, and he was just about the same, perhaps a little hard on it, here and there.

CD

I reckon 'just right' - it's a step in the right direction for prices, but not enough to "soften" yet. You also call out some valid points around the rasterisation vs features conundrum. Although I must say it's becoming more difficult to land a 6800XT deal in my local market thesedays.

Steve Phillips

First, I do not play games. I am 75yo and follow HUB so I can have an intelligent conversation with my grandson (because he is a 'gamer!') I view other enthusiast sites (GN, LTT, LT1 & AHOverclocking) so I have a 'feel' for the general sentiment of the market towards the Card Cartel (come on Intel!) To be honest, I was actually taken aback by the lack of criticism and overall degree of positivity for the 4070. Speaking as an observer, I believe that Nvidea is constantly striving to push the envelope, pricing wise, and I would not buy one of their products because of this belief. I also think that there is not enough card specification difference to merit the price steps they are trying to implement. I do think that HUB is a leader in fair, objective reporting. Please keep up the good work!

Colin Hannah

I think it was about right. I know gpu pricing is currently out of control but accepting some inflation is reasonable. 20% maybe too high but maybe not. Hard to say. NVIDIA and AMD also seem to be struggling to put out new cards and set prices with a big change in GPU demand over the past few years. And reviewers should be stating that these are technically good products, pricing aside as prices will change.

CanadianTechAddict

Generally spot on, but a little soft. Looking at msrps for comparison is, frankly, useless ... they didn't matter then, and what the price was then doesn't matter now. Compare to current prices only ... then I think you didn't stress enough that this thing generally TIES somewhere in range of the 6800xt-6950xt, 3080 - 3080ti... 2 fricken year old cards. TWO YEARS .... and it's the same price or more? That's absolutely insane. You just didn't stress those enough, but I have to wonder if you are just worn down by these recent releases and stagnation on price to perf. Otherwise, great review.

hardwareunboxed

Yeah the 'good value' did come with a number of qualifiers.

ZarconDeeGrissom

600 bucks, 'mid-range', even with inflation over the gtx10 series, not in this multiverse, lol. nvidia is, uh, (redacted) delusional, or completely out of touch with reality, lol. Thats not even getting into the alleged 'green' companies with the watts these things require when we are all supposed to be reducing our whatever-footprint. Nvidia, remember when innovation implied doing more with less (size/watts/cost), this isn't it, lol.

Timothy Wood

It's a relative judgement, the current market is terrible and pricing Vs performance is obviously being manipulated to upsell and maintain the crazy lockdown margins. The 4070 is ok but not a good buy. Really more of the same price to performance. That's at MSRP, the reality is much worse in the UK with prices of the good models around £700. At that price it's a hard pass.

Timothy Wood

And only for the bottom of the barrel MSRP cards. Wait until the masses realise they'll be paying $100 more for the cards they actually want 😉

Tasos Kalaitzis

As consumers we need to "push" to get the market back to where it was, this pressure can also come from media like you, so terms like 600 bucks mid-range doesn't help. We shouldn't accept the new prices in the market, otherwise in the future we will need more than 3000 to build a really good system.

Eik Brønsro

I Think that the prices do mark the spot where the old world can pay. If you can’t you have to wait for prices fall to your liking.

Lord Ba'al

Maybe slightly soft on it Steve but it's hard to tell with no direct competitor at the moment. At "$600" msrp it's about 100 too much for what it is assuming you can find one for that. I think I'll be waiting for what AMD brings before deciding what my next card will be. Though I wonder how of a bonus DLSS3 is on a card at that level.

Tomáš Pavlík

all seemed right with the review - except it has 12 GB vram, which is at the bring of beeing used now in 1440p, so in 1 year I am not sure if it would be 1080p card, because of vram

Nikos Stefanopoulos

If you care mostly about power efficiency, you wont choose the 6950XT, you choose the 4070. In 4K the average fps difference is 17 fps and in 1440p is 20 fps

Kdansky

There's not much you can do about it. nvidia has essentially browbeat us into accepting awful prices at all tiers. It's a monopoly that's overcharging the customers, and as a reviewer, you cannot change that fact. Is the 4070 a good deal compared to 5 years ago? Absolutely not. Is it a good deal compared to the lack of options that we have right now? Probably yes.

Yellowswift3

I thought it was a fair review, so 'about right'. I didn't think that you were overly positive about it, but in the current line-up and pricing, it could have been worse than it is. Like you said in your review, $600 is still too much, though I'm a little surprised Nvidia didn't price the FE model above that.

Eleriam

There's one thing I want to commend you on Steve: you were really smart comparing the value of the RX 7900 XT. I suspected but had no easily quantifiable evidence of how much better deal an $800/£800 7900 XT is. Now we know! Knowledge is indeed power. If people don't heed your analysis despite the clear evidence, that's on them.

Adrian Wujtowicz

I think a little soft but I guess the card ain't half bad when you consider inflation 😅😅

Jon B

i think the review was fair. i checked the actual pricing in my region and at 669 EUR its slots in quite well with the competition and is even competitive with the used market. you can pick up a 3090 here quite easily for around 700 euros to put things into perspective. so in that sense you only sacrifice a few frames to get something new with fresh waranty. the 7900XT sits at 899 new here. is it a good card. yea but thats also a lot of money. personally i think 12gb will be fine for a long time (for most people). unless your the 1% of gamers who has to play all the latest obscure games at 4k ultra. so i agree that its a good product. do i wish it was priced more like a 970 or 1070 yea. but times change. inflation and all that bs.

McElvisss

I thought slightly too soft, but only because of the value. Your conclusions about performance were spot on, but it’s pretty much 3 years now of price/performance improvement for consumers and it’s really not on imo! *insert Jesse Pinkman “he can’t keep getting away with this” gif*

Antanas Legota

I think "A bit too soft". Even though there were multiple points made in the review, that product looks good only because everything else is bad, there were also multiple times when one could hear "it's fine" between the lines. I might be wrong, but I believe that those who voted "too soft" wanted to hear that this is bad, and we're still far away from "normal pricing". Part of me understands that "ideally 500$ would be OK" is what you can realistically expect from current market, but I'd want to just delete that pandemic-mining-shortage period and the effect it had on pricing, therefore say that" 400$ would be ideal price" for such product. And even though I believe I understand your position - someone who skips most of the review and goes directly to conclusion could get different view. I've rewatched "Final Thoughts" part and I think it's too easy to misinterpret what you meant there. Other than that I believe review was great as always, pointing out potential competitive products (both AMD and NV itself) that are in the market.
