Hey everyone, it's Early Access Day, and while next week is the Ten Worst Songs of 2025, I think some of you might enjoy this week's video just as much... especially those of you who like when I put rap songs in the list. Did you know the rap genre basically collapsed in popularity this year? If you hate rap, get your party hats and streamers out! If you love rap, perhaps a black veil? Watch the video to see what I'm talking about!

Over the past several decades, many music genres have risen and fallen in popularity. But Rap and Hip-Hop spend decades proving it wasn't a fad, to the delight of some and the severe dismay of others. Until this year?! After a 35 year streak, there wasn't a single rap song in the Billboard Hot 100 in October. But was this a fluke? A sign of how the charts are now compiled? OR, could we have seen this coming if only we saw the signs that rap has been losing its popularity for like 5 years now? Probably that third one. Buckley's got a theory as to why Rap just isn't as dominant as it once was.

Rap died with the release of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III in 2008. Pre that album, you actually had to have TALENT to be a rapper. Post that albums release we've gotten crappy rappers like Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty, Drake, Nicki, and others who make MC Hammer, Sir Mix A Lot, Snow, and Vanilla Ice seem legit.

Danni Lamarr

Much like with Rock, I guess it had its run.

Brandon Delon

Everything comes and goes. That would be the cycle of life. I think something like a music genre dying bothers many because they know that they’re gonna die one day too. Never mind I listen to plenty of new artists that are pretty good, that will never chart, because most have never heard of. Who put more effort into their stuff than most charting artists. So this is a whatever.

Justin Smith II

There were plenty of untalented rappers before '08 just like there's plenty of talented rappers past '08

Ron

There were always crap rappers (i.e. Mims, Ying Yang Twins, Yung Joc) but they lasted only 1 single if any. Nowadays these rappers post Tha Carter III do what Wayne did, whore the media with incoherent lyrics, bs dreads, and somehow have clowns love you.

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

Would the unfortunate arrival of mumble rap and its respective one-hit/two-hit wonders, and those who's "pussy be yankin'" be a contributing factor to the decline?

Numptaloid

an interesting thing to suggest during one of the strongest years rap has ever had

A Dose of Buckley

Not in terms of the charts. In terms of "good songs"? Very subjective of course. But in terms of actual popularity, when compared to like 15 years ago? It WAS pop music for a while there. If a rap song wasn't #1, a song with a rap verse was.

Oscar Hornstein

Ngl, having watched Buckley make fun of lazy generalisations, it's a bit weird seeing him commit so hard to anecdotal generational stereotypes

A Dose of Buckley

Many of these are based on studies. Gen Z is drinking less, and they're not having sex as much as previous generations.

Oscar Hornstein

Well people across the board are having sex less, might have more to do with the times in general than this crop, and it's not like that translates into puritanical views on sex in media, which seem to be cherry picked social media posts

Cephalo

I blame Rap for not seeking actual talented artists and just went to the boonies of major cities and picked a random person….

Alexa Franklin

I had forgotten entirely about Z100 for…at least 10-15 years.

Millennials coined the term "Adulting"... its been around since heckin doggo was a meme. Mainstream rap is pretty ass nowadays, but I think that's most genres. If anything the broadening of who chooses what music is "popular" really made me realize most people just like bad music.
