Hey everyone, it's Early Access Day! Next week's video will be the "Buckley vs Billboard's Top 10 Songs of 2025" video, but before we get to that, we have a look at generative AI being used by the dumbest people in the world. Enjoy!

Webster's Dictionary chose the word "Slop" as its Word of the Year, in response to the ever-growing use of generative AI to make extremely pointless videos, like the trend a little while ago where people would insert themselves onto a movie set meeting various celebrities (the irony completely lost on them that meeting the actual humans would be much cooler). But while we can laugh at the "creativity" of those who continue to defend generative AI, is there anything else we can do about it? Buckley looks at the inevitability of the tech, and tries to understand just why the least creative people in the world are so enthralled with it.

It's not just the content AI slop that I find worthless, but the AI slop ads you see on YouTube before AI slop videos as well. Some dude pretending to be a doctor telling you to drink water with cinnamon to cure your type 2 diabeetus. Or that lotto officials want to kill another dude because he figures out how to hit at least 4 numbers each week. Let slop be slop so we can laugh at it, but without some sort of regulations, it can become dangerous or revenge "fake" porn central.

I think AI’s great. It filters out all the idiots I always wanted to avoid anyway. It also shows how worthless a lot of human minds are. It’s the ultimate filtering tool to show how far we’ve fallen as a species. Another thought, growth can’t happen forever. It’s like the numbing of video game graphics. I haven’t been impressed in a long while now. So there’s nowhere to go but off of the flat earth.

What always got me is whenever people try to use the "well now anyone can create art! It's more accessible now!" I don't necessarily want that. I'm not an artist, I can't draw, write, or do any of that shit. And that's fine, I don't want art created by me, I want art created by people who are good at it. Not everyone is meant to create art, and that's fine. We need great art, and we need normal old nothings to consume that art. There is nothing wrong with not being able to do art. Not everybody is meant to be an artist. Art is supposed to be difficult and thought provoking, if it was easy, then it wouldn't be as special

I still believe that no computer could ever replicate the feel and depth that comes with a work created by an artist. And I like to think that most people can sense that depth and prefer to consume something that has real human emotion as opposed to something that feels relatively empty. At least that’s my way of holding out hope that AI doesn’t completely overrun the world of art, entertainment, and media. Because I believe we will always appreciate and prefer art we can connect with on a human level.

I think that, unfortunately, a lot of people won't know or care. The fortunate part I suppose is that it's going to be stuff that doesn't matter, garbage posted on socials. As far as actual movies or TV shows, or more long-form Internet stuff, I think that the people that do care will notice, and that it definitely won't replace true human emotion. And no one will care about AI actors or internet personalities because it's harder to make a parasocial relationship with a robot.

On the small scale, I can see how AI art is neat, for people that can't draw something and maybe want help creating an image for their DnD character or something, because as someone that does attempt art, it sucks to be so frustrated when you can't draw something the way you imagine it. But what has been birthed into the world unfortunately *isn't* something small and harmless. In order to create, AI has to learn. Which again, if it was from teams of artists that specifically made their art for this kind of use, the same way there are lots of "how to draw characters" books that exist. But that isn't that. The AI music isn't that... not to mention the severe strain on resources... a total nightmare.... But aside from all that, I originally came back here to say that, the very morning I watched this video, a few hours later I was on IG and I saw the video post of The Mean Time Radio (a podcast) where Jared wrote a song called Slop and like... the timing was impeccable. And seeing the IG videos of Patrick's reactions as well as Jared just jamming to his own song while it plays, fricking hilarious!!! I watched both parts multiple times, it was just too funny. Crazy how timing is sometimes.
