Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose Day, and this week's bonus should have been #311 just for the theme of it (if you watched MTV in the 90s, there's no way you escaped seeing the music video for "Down"). Anyway, a look at how misinformation spreads on the Internet when people don't read past the headline. Enjoy!

At the beginning of 2026, a bunch of "news" accounts posted something that shattered the hearts of Gen X and Millennials everywhere: MTV, Music Television, the channel of everyone's youth... has officially died and has gone off air. Thing about this? It's not really true, and you'd have known that if you actually cared! Buckley looks at the actual news, and tells you what's actually playing on that station these days (you might be surprised to hear that the channel known for pivoting to reality shows in the 2000s doesn't really play those anymore either).

RIP MTV... sorta (Extra Dose)

Missing MTV is just missing childhood, which I don’t actually miss. Let’s just keep going forward. Not like there’s much choice anyway.

This Boomer saw the first video on MTV when I was an undergrad. Got to see a lot of Devo at the start because they were pioneers of music videos. Some were great, Art of Noise had a couple that scared pop music lovers, etc. Phil f'ing Collins had excellent videos back then. I haven't paid attention to MTV in decades now.

All I could think of, after that baby clip was the sound of Sting crying “I want myyyy… I want myyyyy MTVVVVV….”

My friends brother worked at MTV on Bravia & Butthead. His take was that people always complained about there being no music on MTV, but whenever they would try to switch back to music videos, viewership plummeted. People never seem to want what they say they want. They just don’t want the new thing.

I do miss when MTV played music videos, actually. Gave me something to watch while waiting for my order at the local kebab place.

I remember watching ridiculousness and Worlds Dumbest back when I was young. At least Worlds Dumbest had comedians to do SOME clever commentary but looking back on Ridiculousness really was just foreshadowing the way “entertainment” was going. Doom scrolling, reaction channels, streamers, stitches — I guess the more things change the more things stay the same…

I liked MTV but even back when it showed videos they had horrible shows (TRL, The Real World, Road Rules, Wild N Out with Nick Cannon, Making The Band, The Challenge, My Super Sweet 16, Teen Mom, MTV Cribs (except Redman's house episode)). The concept of watching videos on MTV died when YouTube was created. As for the award shows they had, movie awards lost its luster when the critically panned Twilight movie series kept winning awards. VMA's lost its luster when the talentless Lil Nas X rode controversy to VMA wins.

Heh I'd imagine YouTube was the real slayer of the MTV music video, instead of dealing with commercials. YouTube you just type anything and boom it's on
