Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose Day! This week's video is about maybe one of the most enduring stories of the last month online, as people can't seem to shut up about "Obsession", the low budget movie made by a YouTuber that, along with "Backrooms", has smashed all box office expectations. But what happens when the low budget thing you worked on makes millions upon millions of dollars? Well let's find out!

Obsession, a horror movie made by a YouTuber for $750,000, has lived up to its name online, as people are OBSESSED with talking about it. Buckley looks at the discourse around the Art Director, Sally Choi, who complained about only making $7000 when the movie made $250,000,000. BUT, has she done a good job of getting normal people on her side? Are there "NORMAL" people on the Internet to take a side?!

I do think people need to get paid more, something actually livable these days, but unless you’re at the top, you sadly won’t make that much.

Pim

Scale of one to ten. How big of a deal of a job is "art director"?

I watched a really funny and fascinating comedy standup called "Where's My F*ckin Money?" recently that hit on this problem, where he talked about the huge amount, comparatively, of profit his shows had garnered, and how little of it he received. She definitely flubbed her post. If she'd just left it at the beginning bit and expressed that it would be nice to get a bigger share of the success I think it would've gone over better, instead of acting like she was entitled to it. Still, who knows, maybe she was successful, if that other group really does intend to share its portion of the profits. I guess we'll see.

Sometimes I wonder if I am living on the right planet. I did not have a single clue what this was about. But I was born when there were 4 TV stations, and was mostly through elementary school when we got color TV. You Tubers making movies for paid release? What next.

This video just didn’t interest me. There wasn’t anything one way or the other where I really cared. I think humans have become so boring. It’s just the never ending grinding of the same shit forever. The shit takes different forms but it’s still the same shit. I’m tired. Thank you internet for the endless noise.

she’s cut off her nose to spite her face. your first art director job being a massive hit should lead to higher paying job offers on other projects. hell inde navarette who played the lead girl has people talking oscar nominations, i guarantee whatever she works on next she’s gonna make a lot more than 20k. this girl could’ve rode the same wave but decided to shoot herself in the foot in the name of improving the industry or whatever

As the only person I know that likes the horror genre, I knew something was deeply off when somebody I knew asked me to go see obsession with them.

Scott the K

I would say it’s pretty high . They are responsible for the entire look of the movie and oversee set design from initial concept drawings to what finally appears on film. I would guess that in genre film (horror, sci-fi, and the like) they are key contributors.

In a creative career, unfortunately nothing's guaranteed. This movie could have just as easily made nothing, just like most indie movies do, I believe she got paid $7000 for a month of work, that'd be great money if it was every month, lot of people here would probably kill for $7k a month. But it's an industry where you won't work every single month.

I imagine it's just one of those thankless jobs... it's "below the line", which basically means not the director or any of the cast. The Art Director generally reports to the Production Designer, who's a little more responsible for the things Scott mentioned, but very possible they execute a lot more of it. Maybe 5, 6 out of 10? (in the context of "film jobs", in the context of like... real jobs? Probably a lot lower, I think the world could function without art directors).

If it makes you feel any better, I think this is how even 25 year olds feel now... there's just no "monoculture". But, as of right now this is the 7th biggest movie in the world and 5th biggest movie in the USA of 2026 (that'll change with all the summer blockbusters but it's pretty big). I'll probably watch it if it's on one of the streaming sites I already subscribe to.

Very poor optics and marketing. If she’d been smart, she’d have used her position on this job as a bargaining chip to get better work and get more perks - not many indie art directors get to say they achieved this sort of success. Instead, she publicly pissed and moaned about making more money than most people ever make in a day.

HelterSeltzer

I'm not going to pretend to know her motives but I think she could have handled this better

Niki MG

She better hold on to that 7k like that's the last check she's ever getting. Because it just might be after this.

The producer and the executive producer are two different things. The producer is like the manager of the film and handles all the business side so the director didn’t have to think about that and they could just focus on the Art. The executive producer is like the financer.

Connor Armenti

Honestly I'm just very keen to hear Buckley's opinion on the movie himself if he saw it....
