Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose Day, and today's video gives you a little more of an answer to the question "what the hell did Buckley do for all those years?" AND will give you info to use in arguments with your co-workers. Enjoy!

As the monoculture continues to erode, people find out about the most popular songs in the country and say things like "I've never heard this, I don't know anyone who's talking about this, HOW is this supposedly so popular?!" Buckley tackles one of the most recent theories: they play in store and gym playlists which artificially boost the numbers. Learn some previously undiscovered Buckley Lore while finding out the much scarier truth about why these songs are so popular.

Carson Daley on TRL. Watched that all the time and in many ways hated it. Play part of a song I actually want to hear and then cut it off half way through. Some things are better today. Now I don’t endlessly sit and watch MTV all day long. I guess that’s good.

I’m pretty sure I saw the video this person is referencing. The point was more to do with the “blue dot fever” trend. The point was that, someone like Post Malone, Maroon 5, and Megan Trainor were more famous because they were everywhere- on every Muzak playlist - not because they had an active fan base. In terms of the music licenses - (disclosure, I work in hotel management) you submit a record of how many TV’s you have in public spaces, how much you’ve made on live music, karaoke, etc. and then there’s a lookup table to determine your annual fee. You don’t have to list every song or songwriter. The licensing companies distribute based on their own policies. If you have a system like Muzak or DMX, they cover the license. The business has to pay a license for any TVs. If you notice a business that has the volume turned off on all their TV’s and they won’t let you turn it on, it’s because they refuse to pay for a license fee to ASCAP,SESAC,BMI or any of the smaller licensing firms ( more and more are popping up as artists sell their catalogs to private equity companies)

"You don’t have to list every song or songwriter" yeah for an individual, that would be insane for sure. For the company I worked for, I forget the frequency but we had to report it at some regular interval, and it was just the list of songs and how many times each one played overall (they didn't care what specific venues or anything like that). Though that might have been for our own licensing now that I think of it, as obviously we had to pay for the rights to even use the songs (they get everyone comin' and goin', the stores/gyms/restaurants pay for the right to have a song play, the company distributing pay for the right to provide the song in the first place, so on and so forth).

I didn't know they cut off songs, but I get it, probably to give the illusion that they were getting through as many requests as possible. I met an radio industry big-wig once who said he hated requests because "they only serve to satisfy that ONE listener, your job is to satisfy a MILLION listeners". Always kinda stuck with me (as everyone's known my request policy for nearly 2 decades).

I imagine it’s different for radio stations and the like. I seem to recall having to log things back in my high school radio days. I expect it’s all computerized now.

I've heard of Ella, but who the fuck is this Buckley guy!?

Aaron Rainer

Lol, I'd never even heard of her until your autopsy, still haven't heard the song all the way through.

Ash Archer

Came for the topic, stayed for the Buckley lore! It’s interesting!

Niki MG

I had no idea this woman existed until the musical autopsy.

You remember when they fucked over Tom Green over over "the bum bum song?" Basically it being on top of the charts for an entire (work) week was basically exposing them for the shit not being chosen live, if I remember correctly.
