Hello dear friends!

There's been a few discussions recently regarding the best ways to organize models. Let me introduce you to Michael, who created a special program for these purposes. Try it out and let us know what you're thinking. It's absolutely free, and the video demonstrates the process through the example of Great Grimoire's models.

Here's what Michael has to say:

What you need to know about 3D-Model Organizer Modules:

  • It’s a FREE program for Windows to organize your models
  • You can create a variety of renders (turntable videos, papercut outs,…) with it
  • A powerful tree tag system to filter your collections
  • It keeps the models in their original archives
  • It supports the online import of sets! So not everyone has to do the laborious work.

I prepared a video for you which demonstrates the model browser and how to import the June set of Great Grimoire on a freshly installed 3D-MOM.

https://youtu.be/j_fnnUKH8bo

What you can do: You can either follow the video step by step by installing it and then opening this link:

https://3d-mom.at/RedirectPage.html?ic=31e529f3-bcf1-4201-a87c-ceb0234feba9 (but beware that you need to own the June set on MMF)

or if you want more information, you can visit my website: https://www.3d-mom.at where you can find other tutorial videos and can get a glimpse on the other features!

Feel free to join the discord server and let know your feedback!

If you are extra motivated, I’m looking for volunteers who want to help me to add additional sets and other creators to the imports. This is not a business for me, it’s designed to be a community pursuit, so that in the end everyone can have their collection in a fancy model browser with minimal effort.

Thanks!

Hm. I do need a program like this, but this one doesn't seem to be close yet. To begin with it's beyond unnecessarily complicated. Installation actually requires 4 programs to be installed, one of which is a required legacy version of a program (Direct) you'll almost certainly have the current version of. Then the interface is multiple windows that all do pretty much one thing, and you continually have to reload them. The "basic tutorial" is 20+ steps, and I don't see a way to open it again if you've closed the window (besides reloading the program). There's no immediately clear way to open the program if you don't allow it to create a shortcut or startmenu item. No obvious .exe, so I've been opening it from a .momf collection. the Next, it's excruciatingly slow. I just loaded up the simplest model I could, a scraper. While the render was a matter of seconds, for some reason creating the thumbnail took almost 4 minutes to complete. The next part, the video, took 6 minutes. All told, 11 minutes for the simplest, single .stl on my drive. Unless you're really committed, I suspect most users will be frustrated and bow out. (This was not a system resource bottleneck.) I did do these one after another to test speed, so maybe it's faster if done all at once. The file system is very scattered as well. It can only read ZIP files, and it won't display/automatically read into folders. So you have to point it at a top-level folder that has all of you .zip files thrown in without organization, or you have to manually add each individual file. On a positive note, it will automatically convert .rar to .zip, and it was able to read and use files that I have on Dropbox, which was my primary concern because I have too many files to store locally. However, if you open the model browser and attempt to access the .stl, you'll discover that it unzips the file and *saves a copy of it in the install directory.* So each local file opened that way takes up twice the space. For me it takes files I want remote and creates a local copy. There is an option to close the archive which deletes the copy, but with thousands of models if you forget even occasionally this eats up a lot of space. It may purge these files at some point, but they persisted between open/close. While running these basic tests, the install directory more than doubled in size. Relatedly, I used their built-in collections thing to download the free model. For some reason, instead of going to the directory where it knows my models are, it downloaded this to the install directory instead. Maybe it's just because this was a sample, but if it does that for other files it would be irritating fast. Anyway, while this is headed in the right direction in terms of features, it feels like pre-alpha. Until some of the usability and speed issues are fixed I can't imagine using it personally.

Hi Chris, Michael here! I would prefer the feedback on the discord channel, but thanks for testing it! Regarding 4 programs, as you mentioned DirectX should be common, but I had one case where this was the problem, so for completeness I added it to the install menu. A Runtime for Webviews should also be installed already, but I need quite a newer version of it. And Blender, if you want to make nice renders, you just need a plugin or a programmable render engine like Blender, I can't write that on my own^^. But I get your point that it takes a bit before you can start. There are multiple windows, because if you have multiple monitors like many people, you can order them as you want. What do you mean with you need to refresh them? The basic tutorial is maybe already an advanced tutorial. Without the rendering stuff, I could trim it down to about 5 steps. And yes, that is something that many people suggested (because as you mentioned rendering videos costs a lot of time, so they just want to be able to add a picture and get it into the model browser). The real program files are on your main drive in your Program Files/3DModelOrganizer folder (usually), There is a second folder you choose because the program isnt able to put files in there without privileges etc. but you can find the .exe there. And yes the top level folder that you select, there should be all zip files unorganized, because organizing is that what you want to do with the program, so I would just select the folder you download stuff to? Yes it keeps the files in their original zips, and unzips the parts it needs when you want to access the files (there is no way around it). You can see which models are "opened" and can close it per context menu if you select the "Finalized models" on the list window in the organizer. The size increase should be due to the videos and images it creates (yes beauty has its price). But if you only want an image as a poster it shouldnt take much more space. Yes, the free model gets imported to a different folder (this comes from the earlier days, thanks for pointing that out). The imported collections go all to the location you choose. Regarding render speed. I dont see much to gain there. Some styles need a lot of time while others are faster. But the "Jack of All Trades" should be on the faster side. Rendering videos takes time, do you have rendered videos before to compare? I was kinda new to this, so Im happy for insight. I queue them up and let my computer run through the night, BUT i know that only a handful of people would do that, so the others should probably stick to just create a poster, or wait for people like me to export the renders. I have sure work to do :) and its still in Beta.. We could discuss this more on the discord, if you would like to. Regards Michael

I haven’t had a chance to play with this yet, but if it does what it looks like it does, it’s the BEST PIECE OF SOFTWARE EVER! Over two years of being subscribed to about 20 mini Patreons means I NEED a way of organizing minis! I’m sure I’ve completely forgotten about some really nice ones.
