On July 4, 2015, one of my high school classmates, Melina Thornhill, passed away. She drowned in a lake in Tennessee.

Melina and I weren’t close friends in high school, but we grew up together and she was always friendly to me. When I saw her at our class reunions, I enjoyed catching up with her. She exuded warmth, enthusiasm, and kindness – and she had a great sense of humor. She also was a big fan of cats.

I drew this cartoon as a tribute to her and posted in on Facebook a few days after she passed. Melina is standing behind the cat. If you look closely, you can see her name on Saint Peter’s list.

And wait they will. As it was and ever shall be the motto of every cat “after me, you come first.” RIP to your long time friend.

Wow. Deceptively beautiful, especially now in knowing the story. 😂💗 Sure she would find it funny. (I love the combination of crass and class).
