Last night I was working on this cartoon to post today (for National Grammar Day) but decided to scrap it. I think it's too nerdy and esoteric. I'm posting it here so you can see an idea that, well, flopped. "Dangling participle" just sounds funny to me. I might do a cartoon about dangling participles at some point.

I once thought I understood the rules around apostrophes, and created an e-mail signature that proudly displayed my support of the Apostrophe Protection Society. At the end of the day, I reviewed my mail outbox and discovered that I had unwittingly committed a cruelty towards apostrophes in every single one. Grammar is hard. Grammar is fun.

As an editor, I appreciate it. Just today, I corrected a dangling participle that almost got past me to publication.

Nancy DeStadio

Be mindful of those walking howls when in the woods!

Karen Jagielo

Above my head! 😂🤣 but, dangling participle is funny in itself...🙃

Jojo

I'm not a native English speaker and I want to make sure I understand this. "Walking through the woods" is supposed to modify "her", but now it seems it could modify the lone wolf, which creates confusion for readers. This mistake is called a dangling particle. Correct?

Scott Metzger

Yep, that's right. A correct way to write it would be: "Walking through the woods, she heard a lone wolf's howl, which sent a shiver down her spine."

Jojo

I work with journalists and copywriters and they'd appreciate this 😊😊

On a totally different subject would you consider a cartoon addressing the ability of cats to disappear or seemingly become invisible. Today I searched everywhere, under every bed, sofa and chair. No cat. Suddenly he appeared.

Scott Metzger

That's a good topic! Both of my cats do disappearing acts. I'll have to do a comic on that.

Nancy DeStadio

Cloak of invisibility. Every one who lives with a cat knows this phenomenon. My disappearing one today is a 20 pound black cat. Hard to miss under any circumstance.
