Years ago, I did the cartoon on the left spoofing Dungeons and Dragons (DnD). When I was in middle school, I played DnD, but I didn’t get into it as much as my friends did. By the time I got to high school, I completely lost interest and spent most of my free time running and drawing. That’s the thing about playing DnD – it takes up a LOT of time.

With the huge popularity of Stranger Things, DnD has become more widely known. So someone took my old comic, edited it, and posted it on Facebook. Then a Facebook page for role-playing fans recently shared the edited version and it went viral.

I hate the edited version. I get why people think it’s funny, but the “does this make me look fat” line is a tired cliché.  It’s been done so many times. Also, they used TWO fonts in the speech bubble. Ugh.

The original comic is based on personal experience. My wife and I were at a party, I said something that bugged her (but it wasn’t a joke about her hair—I’m not that dumb), and she called me out on it after we left the party. I can’t remember what I said, but I’m sure I deserved to be called out on it.

The other day, I reached out to the guy who posted the edited comic and asked him to credit my page with a link to the original cartoon. He did that, which I appreciate.

If you like this comic and would like to share, here’s the original version.

On the bright side: I only became a patron of yours due to such a viral cartoon quite some time ago where a Twitter user said: don't spread that cartoon, Scott doesn't like that 😉

Interesting that the players are red, yellow, green, and blue -- a convention among game pieces.

That really sucks that people do this. And so obvious about it. 🙄 that was nice that he shared your page anyway, but still bothers me, and I’m not you! 😉

Also, love your optimism! 😊 Always be nice to your wife! 😉

Well, that IS a silver lining! Glad to have you as a Patron :)

This kind of thing happens every so often (people changing my comics) and, for the most part, I've learned to live with it. I do report the problematic ones - when my comics are changed to include racist or other hateful language, are used for advertising campaigns, etc. Unfortunately a lot of people think that if something's on the internet, they can use it however they like. It's an uphill battle. Luckily the vast majority of people out there are cool and don't mean any harm. And then there are the others...but that's an entirely different blog post. I have some interesting stories :)

Karen Jagielo

I’m sure you have lots of stories! 😉 just too bad people can’t just be honest and kind.

Thanks for staying on it Scott. Other creators probably benefit from your attention to this matter too.
