I drew this comic in 2015. It remains one of the most popular Christmas cartoons I've ever done. It's also one of my favorites because Danny reminds me of myself. I would totally screw up like this.

This was one of those ideas that popped in my head out of nowhere and made me laugh. But I wondered if enough people would get the reference. So I as I was beginning to add color to the comic, I emailed it to my wife to see if the joke worked for someone else than just me (see second image).

My wife has always been a good sounding board. She's an excellent judge of when a joke doesn't work or if it crosses the line into bad taste. Sometimes she says, "I don't really like this one" -- but I draw it anyway. And that annoys the hell out of her. But generally speaking, I follow her advice. If I'm on the fence about an idea and she doesn't laugh, I scrap it.

Her response to my email was, "It's funny. You should draw it."

I've gotten my share of hate emails about this comic it over the years, but I don't care. It's one of my favorites. And I thought I'd share the story behind it.

It's certainly a surprise from someone who usually draws cute, innocent cartoons. But I'm glad somebody did it.

Paul Saunders

It's perfectly executed. She was right

Mitchell Karp

Thanks for sharing both the comic and the commentary. Great stuff 👍

Yeah, some of the hate emails I've gotten have started off with phrases like, "Did you actually draw this???" "Is this really your cartoon?" And then they go on to say how disappointed they are. I love drawing cute animal comics, but if a random, weird joke pops in my head (and it works), I will use it.

Eike Decker

I love this kind of humor.

It’s brilliant. The expression on Danny’s face is priceless.

20 years ago when I moved from the Midwest to Massachusetts what I like to call the creative placement of the letter r in most of the words caused for some very confusing conversations. To this day I still hear something very different from what people are actually saying.

The expression on Danny’s face is hilarious! 🤣 I must not get it completely cuz I’ll admit, I don’t know what a bilbo is… but the misunderstanding is so funny! (And, maybe you shouldn’t write a children’s book… 😉)

Tilghman Lesher

In the Lord of the Rings, Bilbo is the adventurer who discovers the long lost Ring, and who eventually turns it over to his nephew, Frodo, to be taken to Mount Doom, to be destroyed.

Lisa Krolasik

I didn't know what a bilbo is either but I don't think it's necessary to know to think this is funny!

Karen Jagielo

Thanks for the explanation! 😊

Some people take themselves way to seriously. This is funny because it’s funny. End of discussion.
