The other day was my wife's birthday and we celebrated by spending the day in San Francisco. We did the Alcatraz tour and had dim sum. I grew up just north of San Francisco, lived in the city for 14 years, and had never done the Alcatraz tour. My wife did it once, but back in 1996, so it was like it was new to her too.

If you come to San Francisco, I highly recommend the tour. It was fun walking around the island and the Cellhouse audio tour was fascinating.

Here are some photos of the trip, taken by Katrina or me. Photo #4 is my son before food and Photo #5 is him after food. The difference between the two pictures cracks me up.

Have you been to Alcatraz?

I lived in the East Bay most of my life. Just moved out of CA 2 years ago. Anyway, on one trip to Alcatraz years ago a tour guide was bored and took us on a tour with just us. There are tunnels underground. And he took us to other cell blocks that aren’t normally visited. It was totally fascinating. He didn’t allow pictures though. Definitely once in a lifetime opportunity. I wish they’d offer that tour. I’d pay extra to do it again. People should also know that to your Alcatraz you now need to buy your tickets in advance.

* to tour Alcatraz. Damn autocorrect

I've visited SF a few times but not that part. Sounds like a good part to check out next time -- if the city cleans up to the point that I feel safe coming back.

What a difference food makes! Did not do the tour Wish we had. Fascinating

I grew up in Oakland (left when I was in my 20s) and never made it to Alcatraz. Maybe some day when I visit my sisters. Love the before and after food pics. That would be me LOL

I moved to San Francisco in the late sixties but never went to Alcatraz until sometime in the nineties. I had friends visiting from the UK and that was one of the places they wanted to see so I took them there. It was fascinating and I keep meaning to go back. I have friends who volunteer there doing gardening.

Oh yeah, don’t get me started on how dirty the city is. It’s so sad. I’m hoping the city can turn it around.

Scott Metzger

Definitely worth a visit! Yeah we all get cranky when we’re hungry. In our family, my son is the worst. He just falls off a cliff into total despair 😆

Scott Metzger

The gardens are beautiful! That’s one of the things we noticed while walking around the island.

We live in Germany. In 2012 we were staying in San Francisco and wanted to go to Alcatraz. Unfortunately, our son booked the tickets for a wrong day so we did not visit Alcatraz 😀Maybe some day.

Bert Driehuis

I visited Alcatraz in the late nineties. Should've asked someone to take a picture of me!

Sounds cool! I think Alcatraz tour would be awesome, but to get my husband there may be difficult unless we drive (from Illinois 🤪) and he hates flying, but to be fair, I hate big bodies of water, so we’re probably not gonna make it there! 😂🤣 love the pics!! 😊

Scott Metzger

Bummer! Too bad that happened. I love Germany. Been only once. We want to make a Europe trip in the next couple years. Sometime before my daughter graduates from high school

Scott Metzger

Ha ha well I guess that trip is doomed! I’m actually not a fan of big bodies of water either

We did the Alcatraz tour at night in October for my friend's birthday. This was after watching the Ghost Hunters go there. We even stayed behind in a particular cell (can't remember who had been there but it was supposedly haunted). No ghosts showed up that night, but a good time was had by all.❤️ P.S. Where did you go for dim sum?

Julie Blume Nye

Yes, where DID you go for Dim Sum? Also, I hadn’t realized your son was Macaulay Caulkin’s younger clone!

Scott Metzger

Cool! I’d love to do that. A friend just told me today that the night tour is fun. We went to Yank Sing in Rincon Center for dim sum. Love that place.

Scott Metzger

We went to Yank Sing (the one jn Rincon Center). We’ve been there a few times before and love it. That’s funny you say that about my son. We recently watched Home Alone and I thought there were similarities

Laurie Stoker

Yeah! Yank Sing is great! We used to go there for lunch when I was working nearby.

I took my late father-in-law to his barber here in KY at least once. The barber had the red, white, and blue striped pole on the outside. And inside pictures of Alcatraz covered the walls. He had visited the rock and talked about it the whole time I was there. That barber was crazy for Alcatraz!

Scott Metzger

There are definitely people who are fanatics about Alcatraz. A lot of interesting stories. Especially the 1962 escape - the three guys who got out and were never heard from again.

Scott Metzger

My wife used to work downtown and that’s how she found out about it. We stuffed ourselves 😆

Martha Wells

I've never been but always wanted to go.
