This morning a friend of mine sent me a photo of these cartoons I gave to her back in 1993. These are two of the first cartoons I ever drew. They're pretty rough, but the second one actually got published in the Oakland Tribune. I had to redraw it for the paper (second image).

In 1993 I didn't have Illustrator or Photoshop yet, so I used a product called Zipatone to do the shading on the horse. I haven't thought about Zipatone in a very long time, totally forgot about the stuff. Or more accurately, blocked it out of my mind. It was a huge pain to work with. I just Googled Zipatone and this blog post sums up my feelings about it.

Suffice it to say, I was thrilled when I was able to start shading and coloring on the computer.

Love these - even back then your humor was great!

Love these! So cool! And I totally understand on the Zipatone. I clicked on the link and it lost me in the first two sentences… 😳😉

I remember using zipatone (or something very similar) once or twice. There was also a product where you laid the sheet of shading over the drawing and then used a stylus to rub over the shading which was then transferred to the drawing. I also remember doing lettering using that pres to transfer technique. For shading in pre-computer days, I usually used a shading template, a piece of hard plastic with a raised stippling design that you placed under your drawing and then used a soft pencil to lightly go over the part you wanted to shade. I remember a very nice word grain design on one of my templates. I wonder which junk drawer that ended up in?

My friend sent me a couple more of these oldies. Maybe I’ll post them later

Advertising art mostly. I did paste up for K Mart local weekly ads and often had to use clip art product illustrations that needed a bit of shading to look good. Later in some drafting course (maybe architectural rendering?) we used ziptone type stuff, the rub on lettering and the stippling templates. I also used those for posters and such for church before we got a more advance computer than the TRS-80

Ah, yes…I briefly worked at a newspaper in the mid 90s and saw the ad dept using Zipatone at the time.

The only reason I understand it is because I'm a drafter! I trained as a mechanical drafter, drawing by hand. Eventually worked in mapping and have been a civil engineering drafter for 19 years. We have old hand drawn plans that include something like zipatone at our office.
