What is it about dogs wanting to smell the most disgusting things?

I've included the sketch of the first idea, which didn't seem to work. I like the final version better because my wife is a huge fan of those "smelly stores" - the ones filled with scented candles, bath bombs, lotions, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like scented candles. I bought one for my wife recently called "Stinson Beach." And it does kind of smell like the beach.

A candle that smells like a beach? I wonder what scents they used?

Scott Metzger

Yeah I was wondering how they did it. It smells like sea air and it's magical haha

I think dogs like things that smell disgusting to us because they are microbiological set up to digest carrion, so they’ve evolved to like the smells carrion gives off. Our human ancestors, like cats, are at risk if they didn’t eat freshly killed meat, so we evolved to find carrion odors disgusting so we don’t eat it and make ourselves sick.

Glad it delivered! Sounds nice!

Spot on. The unfortunate corollary is that the most delicious treats smell too disgusting to keep in a kitchen cupboard! (Guess how I know...)

Scott Metzger

Yeah there are some nasty-smelling treats! 🤢

Another theory is that they want to cover their own natural smells to fool enemies. They do roll in the stuff.

I do hope "Stinson Beach" smells good!? 😉😅 But seriously, at one time I was an avowed "dog person" (at present I've become a cat person because I was chosen by a cat, and I'm loving it -- but I digress) and my dog ALWAYS sought out disgusting smells to roll in whenever available! Made our trips back home ... "fragrant".😱

I also like the first sketch: different focus

For years, I’ve been praying that isn’t the reason the cats like lying on my shoes.

I agree with the other comment about the interesting different in focus. In the sketch. Remembering your cat Museum of Modern Art cartoon Has me thinking you might try fashioning it into a natural history museum for the doggies, filled with all of the Odorous and otherwise wonderful disgusting natural wonders to be discovered. In for a penny in for a pound: I just got a vision of a replica pit, filled with shoes, the odd dirty socks, and the other contents of my closet floor instead of tar. Actually a treat for both my cats and dogs.
