I may be wrong, but it seems that Madoka's wish make the girls who turned to witches dissapear just before transforming. Sayaka undergone that fate

Re: why are there no magical boys? Kyubey explained in an earlier episode, the girls in the second stage of development experience the greatest emotional fluctuations between hope and despair, which makes them the most ideal candidates for gathering energy, according to Kyubey anyway. And yes, the ending is a bit confusing, there is a lot to proces and it needs to settle. You could say that Madoka's wish results in her basically euthanizing magical girls right before they give in to despair and become a wish. I think Madoka's reason for making such a specific wish (and not just deny Kyubey or the concept of magical girls) is both that she on some level acknowledges that Kyubey did advance humanity, and perhaps even more so she wanted to acknowledge the hope and the wishes that comes with the magical girls. She wanted to keep Sayaka's wish intact. There is A LOT to discuss about this anime, so I will recommend looking up discussions for your own enjoyment, rewatches on reddit is a great place to find great discussions. Unfortunate about Rebellion - it is somewhat controversial, but IMO it is a masterpiece (though I probably had to watch it a few times before I realised how much I appreciated it). Anyway thanks for watching this series, it stood as my #1 favorite anime for several years until it got usurped by Clannad (and a few others) - if you are open to a different genre (and if you haven't watched it already) Clannad would absolutely be my recommendation for the next show for you to watch. That is, unless you have any long term plans to read the VN, though personally I prefer the anime over the VN. Alternatively, an often missed gem of an anime that should tick most of your boxes and, interestingly, also a magical girl series: Princess Tutu (further, I can recommend both the sub and the dub). The Monogatari series is one of the most well-known modern anime, it is heavily psychological and by the same studio that did Madoka Magica. It is really, really, really good but I'm having trouble imagining if it would suit your tastes, haha. You'd definitely need to up your tolerance for lewd/inappropriate behavior because it is not in short supply (this has nothing to do with what makes it good though). Also it is on the longer side. NANA is a great series, I wouldn't call it psychological but more of a drama, but it is very interesting and an emotional heavy-hitter. A few shorter psychological ones that are all extremely highly regarded: Welcome to the NHK, Ping-Pong the Animation and the Tatami Galaxy. All of them are fairly unconventional, but in a good way. Finally, the (movie) series Garden of Sinners (aka Kara no Kyoukai). It consists of 9 (medium length) movies that are extremely gorgeous and fascinating (but a bit confusing at times), by the same people that made Tsukihime and the Fate series. Also if you haven't already watched it, I guess Attack on Titan? It has some relevancy with the final season coming up very soon. I could definitely come up with more, though in terms of "objectively" good series that are finished and within the psychological genre I think this is a decent baseline

2026-09-06 17:00 so no movie then? You only need to watch rebellion since the other two are just recaps

If that's the case, I recommend Munoun no Nana or Talentless nana. Its basically a reverse murder mystery because the protag is the one doing the killings and she has to make it appear as though she is innocent. Its also only 13 episodes long so it isn't too long.

Had a lot of fun with this watchalong, was a real treat to revisit this story and see how well it held up. I'll just reiterate my offer from youtube to mail a copy of the bluray if you are interested, I'm in Canada as well so shipping shouldn't be too onerous.

As for anime recommendations, a few that come to mind are - Kino no Tabi (2003) (an episodic show about a traveler who visits "countries" which represent different ideals, very though provoking and quite dark in parts) - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (An incredibly mature drama about Rakugo in the mid-20th century, incredibly gripping and also fairly dark) I will also echo Made in Abyss, which many others have recommended

I second talentless nana. Great show.

Useless fact: the airing of these episodes was delayed because they contained scenes of devastation, and the Great Tohoku Earthquake had just happened then (the one that had also hit the Fukushima NPP)
