Red Keep 110 A.C.
Rhaenrya
Life Rhaenrya thought, can get complicated awfully fast when a new member is introduced to the family and the birth of Aegon was the perfect example of that, the subsequent births of Helaena and Aemond haven’t helped either.
With the queen’s fertility proven and the lack of a cock between her legs Rhaenrya was just getting further and further from what belonged to her, the claim she had over the Iron Throne was less secure than it had ever been before. Even when her uncle, the person recognized as the most dangerous man in the Seven Kingdoms, was in the Red Keep sulking about his displacement in the line of succession and angry enough to do something crazy she didn’t feel so vulnerable.
Rhaenrya needed a more stable base of support if her claim was to be respected, she had no doubt Otto Hightower was still petitioning her kingly father for the title of prince of Dragonstone to be granted to Aegon. Luckily Rhaenrya’s cousin was the ruling power in the Vale, so she had at least one of the Seven Kingdoms fully behind her.
Not only was Jeyne also a woman who had to fight for the right to keep what was hers but Rhaenrya had made sure to communicate with her constantly and she was happy to say that they were now very good friends, Jeyne would fight to give me what was rightfully mine the only thing that was an obstacle were her unruly vassals who wasted no opportunity to try to install a man on the seat of the Vale.
Rhaenrya was already three and ten and soon her father would try to get her to agree to a betrothal something that at this moment she viewed as unnecessary but if she got the chance to pick her husband herself then it wouldn’t be so bad. She doubted that her father would take her choices in mind as Rhaenrya doubted her father would be happy to know how much she wanted to have either her uncle or Ser Cole as consort.
Even so, Rhaenrya figured she could stall a little longer perhaps even for another year, as she was thinking about marriage Rhaenrya barely paid attention when her door was opened and Ser Criston Cole entered the room, her long-time companion and sworn sword knew that she loathed when people interrupted her private time so she knew that something big had happened and with the war in the Stepstones long over she doubted it had to do with her uncle, her father may say he doesn’t care about what Daemon does but the fact that he keeps requesting updates about his health shows just how much he cares for his brother.
“There is news from Dragonstone, my princess, a dragon rampaged through the town and your father commands you to take Syrax and deal with it, by all accounts it seems to be a young like your own and should be easily intimidated back into the volcano, he hopes that the Cannibal will take care of the rest as his habit of letting a dragon grow only to kill it and then eat its eggs is well known”
These were grave news indeed, worse still, she was the princess of Dragonstone and sworn to defend it. A great tragedy like this one will surely sour the minds of the people that had always been loyal to her family.
“You will be of little help to me in this quest Ser Criston”
“The fact that Syrax would never let me mount her also is a great excuse” he threw out a wry smile with the comment and that alleviated some of the anxiety she felt at her mission “You must hurry, the message took two days to arrive, and no one knows what has happened since then”
Rhaenrya thought about passing through Driftmark first and asking for help, but she figured that her father and the Velaryons were still on bad terms, the fact that her father valued his pride so much as to risk her life incensed her a little, but the confidence he must have in her abilities offset the dark thoughts and gave her a sudden bout of determination.
She was Rhaenrya Targaryen, and she would not fail!

Dragonstone
Even if the cause of her trip was something so tragic, Rhaenrya couldn’t help but enjoy the feel of the air around her as Syrax closed in on Dragonstone. Any enjoyment she had faded when she saw smoke in the distance coming from the port town that she had visited before with her father.
With a word Syrax dove down but instead of a town filled with sorrow Rhaenrya heard cheers, she doubted they were for her as the smallfolk couldn’t have known about her arrival but once she got to the center of the town, she saw the cause of their newfound happiness.
Deep in a trench of its own making lay the body of a dragon, lean and nimble as it looked the cause of death was easy to see, as the hilt of a massive sword could be seen atop its head.
The people paused when she landed but many knew that the only dragonrider that her house boasted right now in the Seven Kingdoms was her and so the party they had continued.
There was a word that they screamed at the top of their lungs, and she could hardly believe what it was.
“Targaryen! Targaryen! Targaryen! Targaryen! Targaryen! Targaryen!”
She was certain that her house had done nothing to help them and yet here they were claiming for the last of the Dragonlords. With her mission accomplished, at least from a certain point of view, Rhaenrya took to the skies intent on reaching the castle and finding out just what had happened on the island.
Someone had killed a dragon, it was inconceivable! Not even in myth was there a knight who went to battle without a stratagem and survived the wrath of fire made flesh.
The castellan came rushing out when he heard Syrax landing and after a quick bow started telling her why there was a dead dragon in the middle of the town.
It was the story of a quest for vengeance, of a son who lost his mother to the fury of the dragon and who forged a sword so monstrous only he was capable of wielding it, the tale of a man who looked for anyone to company him on his journey and was decried a fool for the idea, he who called all the people that were content to hide away until the dragon left cowards and then stole a horse and headed for the lair of the dragon.
A legend had been formed on Dragonstone when man and dragon sailed through the air while fighting and crashed into the town. At that moment all had seemed lost, the brave man lay on the ground barely moving when he heard the cry of a mother scared for her son, the sight of the tragedy he lived repeating itself in front of him gave him a last burst of strength that saw him jumping with his sword onto the head of the dragon and with a scream that sounded more like a dragons roar than the voice of a man the deed was done.
“We are treating the man in the castle and I’m happy to say that the master thinks he will survive, he is very scarred and the vambrace he wore on his left arm has fused into his flesh, he also lost his right eye. It was cauterized to prevent infection so he can’t even get a fake eye” the castellan spoke somberly but with quiet hope for the man that had saved Dragonstone from further tragedy.
“I would like to meet him when he wakes,” Rhaenrya said as she fell onto a chair “you look troubled, is there something more you have to say?”
The castellan hesitated and then took what looked like a letter and a pendant that was undoubtedly made of Valyrian steel “Another reason that the man went looking for the dragon was that it took his mother’s torso, and this was with her, he said it was her most prized possession and the inheritance she was about to give him”
Rhaenrya couldn’t believe it, why would a woman of such low standing have something so valuable and why wouldn’t she sell it?
“The master took it from him and while we would have liked to respect his privacy the fact that he had this was suspicious, he read the letter and…” once more the castellan was hesitating and this time Rhaenrya didn’t have as much patience with him, she swiped the parchment from his hand and went to read it.
The first thing she noticed was the familiarity of the letters, she had seen them before the telltale signs of someone who learned Valyrian first and the common tongue later, only two people older than her could have written this letter.
I have no words to describe what I’m feeling, I will be married soon but all I can think of is you, I know now that the sweet words we told each other were true. What might have started as lust slowly became love and if I could, I would escape the trappings of my station to live with you.
My sweet Vaelerya, I’ve lived only sixteen summers but if I died tonight, it would all have been worth it just because I met you, I spoke to you once when in the hills around the Dragonmont about the life I wanted for us, we lost ourselves in fantasies of a world both of us knew would not last.
We named each of the daughters you wanted to have and the only son I wanted, in that lovely dream, we traveled the known world together and once we were too old, we returned to Dragonstone to spend the rest of our days living peacefully in the place we met.
I have a duty to my family that I cannot escape and to protect you I must leave you, but before I leave, I want you to know just how much you mean to me, with this letter comes a pendant that will never lose its luster as I would never lose my love for you.
Know that for the rest of my days you will have a place in my heart that no one can usurp, my heart breaks as I write this… but once you’re reading this I will be long gone, for if I stay and see your face come morning I will not have the strength to leave.
Vaelerya, I continue to be racked with agony. In this entire world there simply aren’t enough words…There are far, far too few to adequately express a love that goes way beyond the feeling conveyed by the words ‘I love you’.
And yet, even if I knew all the prettiest phrases, what mere words could possibly convey the fullness of this feeling that’s nestled in my heart and consumes my entire body and soul?
‘I love you’ is such a simple phrase. It’s just nowhere near enough. I leave this day with this indescribable feeling weighing on my heart. Far more than just love.
Yours, always and forever, Viserys Targaryen.
The world seems distant as she finishes reading and she can hear the laughter of a woman, it isn’t until the floor moves beneath her feet and she falls from the chair that Rhaenrya realizes she is the one laughing.
“Princess!” the castellan shouts as she remains on the ground, but she can only think of the man, the man that is probably her brother. Something ugly and fierce crawls under her skin and she almost rips the letter in her hands to pieces before she stops herself as a question blooms in her mind.
“What is his name?” it is not a request, the polite tone she had for the castellan is long gone and the only thing that remains in her voice is the fury of a dragon.
The castellan opens and closes his mouth several times, with her patience running short she stands up and grabs the man by the lapels and screams in his face “What is his name!?”
“His name is Baelon” the words quench the fire that was raging in her veins and all Rhaenrya feels fades away, a broken sob leaves her mouth, and without thinking she grabs the pendant and runs toward Syrax.
There is a haze in her vision, something has broken in her heart at knowing that her father loved another before her mother and that the name bestowed on her baby brother was nothing more than the name of the babe he wanted to have with another woman.
She needs no words to command Syrax, the she-dragon understands where she wants to go, the trip to King’s Landing is short or it seems short as the words in the letter repeat endlessly in her head.
Without noticing she is already back in the Red Keep, her feet take her to the small council chambers and as soon as she crosses the door the conversation inside quiets down.
Rhaenrya barely pays attention to the words that Otto is speaking, she has only eyes for her father and once she is in Infront of him she speaks again.
“Congratulations, you have a son” the words coming out of her mouth may as well have come from a corpse with the way she delivers the words there is confusion in the King’s face, confusion that gives away to horror and understanding once she throws the pendant and the letter to his face “His name is Baelon and he is currently on Dragonstone being cared for by the master there, why don’t you go and see your bastard!”
There are gasps all over the room even the Kingsguard are not prepared to hear the words and soon she is running toward her chambers with her father shouting her name behind her, but she can’t bear to see him, to know that the love he had for her mother was nothing compared to the love he had for this other woman.
The sounds of shouting fill the halls as she runs, behind her chaos is the only thing left and even now she can barely enjoy the shock that was present on Hightower’s face when the word bastard came out of her mouth.
Life, Rhaenrya thought, gets more complicated when a new member is introduced to the family.
