Hello Patrons, James here. I'm working on a little something and could use your help!

When you eventually explore TITANIC: PROJECT 401, you will be tasked with collecting a LOT of small cards hidden all over Titanic. On these cards will be testimonials from survivors - and even a few victims of the disaster.

So I've compiled pretty much every testimonial I would personally like you to find in the project but I'm interested if you have a favorite testimonial that I missed!

Here's what I'm looking for right now. Submit testimonials in the comments from:

  • 2nd Class Passengers

  • OR

  • A Crew Member who worked in 2nd Class

  • AND/OR

  • A testimonial that describes a 2nd Class space

  • AND/OR

  • A testimonial that describes an event that happened in 2nd Class

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The testimonial must be related to the time between the iceberg collision and Titanic disappearing beneath the surface. So these must be sinking-themed.

  • The testimonial must be between 1 and 100 words (ideal length is around 50 and less).

  • There MUST MUST MUST be a WRITTEN source of this quote. No testimonials from audio or visual recordings. Books, newspapers, letters, etc are all fair game. Include the source in the comment if you can!

Get creative! If someone recalls the words of a Steward, those words can stand alone as a testimonial for "Unknown Steward."

I'm excited to hear what your favorite testimonials are! Here's an example to get the juices flowing:

JACOB W. GIBBONS - 2nd Class Steward - Western Gazette, 3 May 1912.

"The strains of 'Nearer my God to Thee' came clearly over the water with a solemnity so awful that words cannot express it."

Hunter Fitzpatrick

"I passed the purser's window on F deck, and noticed a light inside; when halfway up to E deck, I heard the heavy metallic clang of the safe door, followed by a hasty step retreating along the corridor towards the first-class quarters. I have little doubt it was the purser, who had taken all valuables from his safe and was transferring them to the charge of the first-class purser." - Lawrance Beesley, 2nd class passenger, The Loss of the SS Titanic

Jorn Magnus Karlsen

MASABUMI HOSONO - Japanese 2nd class passenger - "A testament to the will to live" - The Guardian 13. december 1997 (Hosono's diary) "I tried to prepare myself for the last moment with no agitation, making up my mind not to leave anything disgraceful as a Japanese subject. But still I found myself looking for and waiting for any possible chance for survival."

Peter Kyhl

Lawrence Beesley - 2nd Class passenger - description of the liftboy - The Loss of the SS Titanic. "He was quite young,—not more than sixteen, I think,—a bright-eyed, handsome boy, with a love for the sea and the games on deck and the view over the ocean—and he did not get any of them. One day, as he put me out of his lift and saw through the vestibule windows a game of deck quoits in progress, he said, in a wistful tone, "My! I wish I could go out there sometimes!" I wished he could, too, and made a jesting offer to take charge of his lift for an hour while he went out to watch the game; but he smilingly shook his head and dropped down in answer to an imperative ring from below".

Clément Morancho

JOHN HARDY – 2nd Class Steward – United States Senate inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic, 25 April 1912 (answering to a question of Senator Smith asking if there was anything like a panic on board the ship) « Not at all, because everybody had full confidence that the ship would float. »

Martin B.

British Wreck Commissioner's Inquiry Day 15 Testimony of Wilfred Seward (Second class Pantry Steward) Who got you out of our bed that night? - The second Steward. Did he give you any orders? - No, not special orders, only to get on deck. And you went to the second cabin instead? - I went to my own place. What did you do when you got to the second cabin; did you go into the dining-room? - I went into my own place to see the boat-list. Did you go into the second cabin dining-room? - No. Where did you go to put the lifebelts on people? - Down on the companions. Do you remember seeing the emergency door open on E deck? - All emergency doors were open at that time. How long after the collision was this? - About three-quarters of an hour. Were any general orders given at all throughout the ship in the stewards' department? - To get all the passengers on deck and see they had lifebelts. That was the order? - That was the order. source: https://www.titanicinquiry.org/BOTInq/BOTInq15Seward01.php

Hi Peter. GREAT quote. Luckily it's already in the batch of cards for 2nd Class during the daytime!

James Penca

I love this quote Jorn. The only issue I find with Hosono's testimonials is they are translated a number of ways and I'd love to determine which is the most reliable.

James Penca

Thanks for the suggestion! I will certainly have something from John Hardy in the final list.

Jacoby Clements

John George Phillips- wireless operator- Description of the last moments of contacting ships-When I Contacted Everyone about the sinking and that we needed assistance I wanted to reach out to them after we hit the iceberg but the Captain waited last second to give me orders but when I lost hope the Carpathia said they would come.

If we don't have someone in the community who is Japanese or fluent, I know some linguists. I don't think any of them are fluent in Japanese, but it's generally just a matter of putting out the word with them. We'd need to provide them with the source material for them to translate. I definitely think his words would be an important inclusion, though.

Rocco DeSkonko

The requirements say between the time of the collision and the ship’s disappearance beneath the water, but what about testimonials about the time of the collision? I think it would be neat to have two or three talking about how the collision felt throughout the ship; closer to the impact vs farther away

James Penca

Sorry, by "time of the collision" I meant exactly what you mention, how it felt to endure the collision. I already have 5 or more all to do with how the collision was experienced.

So we keep adding more and more stuff just to delay the release... instead of releasing the damn thing on Steam now and add more stuff later. You just keep adding more "exciting" stuff to it and we never see an actual release.
