I know there are tons of people who say that the Californian was too far to help the Titanic. The Carpathia was 58 miles away and she came! If the Californian was close enough to see a ship firing rockets in the middle of the night, even if that ship wasn't the Titanic, she was a ship in distress. They could have woken the wireless operator at the very least to find out what was going on. It's an unwritten rule of the sea to help another in distress; your day might one day come. Tragically, everyone on the Titanic might have been saved by Hamburg-America steamer Ypiranga, as it was only an hour or two hours distant from the Titanic, but it was called away the previous day to search for the missing German steamer Augsburg, which was supposed to be drifting helplessly in the mid-Atlantic.

This could also be a story told by our dear friend Mike Brady :)
