Witness the launch of a legend in this stunning animation as Titanic enters the Belfast Waters for the very first time 112 years ago today.

With her keel laid down on March 31st, 1909, Titanic spent over 2 years being built within the towering latticework of the Arrol Gantry. The ship was built atop keel blocks and logs on a slope towards the water, with a system of launching ways and cradles built below the hull later in construction. When the time came on May 31st, 1911, the blocks and logs were taken out, 22 tons of soap and tallow were spread on the ways, levers were thrown and, with several pistons undoing a lock on the ways and giving a small push, Titanic slid down the ways into the River Lagan. From there, Titanic would be kept at a wharf and in drydock for fitting-out and completion. Olympic, having just had her sea trials after completion of fitting-out in late May 1911, set sail from Belfast for the first time the very same day of Titanic's launch as a publicity stunt for the White Star Line.

Nice video. The only thing that seemed off for me after working at Bath Iron Works building Navy ships for 28 years was the moments just after the forward poppet dropped clear of the ways. We had two huge cables that attached to the wooden crib work that supported the ship. The cables stopped the crib work so the ship could float clear of it as momentum carried it further out in the water. The cranes would then pull the whole bundle, all stapled together with manilla rope, clear of the ship and onto shore. I don't know if they did that back then, but after watching several dozen ships launched down the ways at BIW before the land level transfer facility was built, that was the only thing that seemed off. We did use a hydraulic ram to start the ship, just in case, but usually after driving the wedges the grease on the ways did the trick after the trigger was pulled. But there was this one time... https://youtu.be/J-Hpk17g4A0

You guys should turn this into an experience, it would be awesome to either stand at the head of the slip way and watch it slide away or free cam around it. Maybe a precursor to P401?

Absolutely breathtaking work gentlemen. Olympic at the end of the video is an amazing addition. Have one question about THG discord. What's the server link for it?? Thanks...
