I learned a good bit of Japanese last year before our trip to Japan in November—it was really hard, but really fun and rewarding. I started on Duolingo but I felt it was lacking so I hired a tutor on Preply who is native to Japan. Most people in Japan spoke English but the look on some of their faces when I spoke a little Japanese to them was priceless! Also helped outside the larger cities where not as many people spoke English and with a lot of the cab drivers in Tokyo, who did not speak English.
