As a dad. It's a lot more than just setting rules. I get what Ellis is saying, but for a kid you communicate with you the way you want, it takes a lot of work as the parent. It's good work and seeing your child be comfortable talking to you about anything REALLY makes you fee proud. Just don't be a dick and your kid shouldn't be a dick either. Role models are real

It goes without saying that people speak from their level of experience - when it comes to most things. James asked Ellis a question, he answered from his level of experience lol. Let him live and learn. Sometimes, in situations when you're the most experienced person in the room, the most mature and experienced thing you can do, is give grace because you were once learning/are also learning. I think what James is thinking of about being drawing the line at children taking their free time is because everything else that he mentioned like work and eating is the bare minimum to keep *ourselves* alive, and it isnt really a new routine. Even as kids, we still went to school, needed to eat etc so that stuff is less like a chore than bringing an entire new life into the world. Taking care of yourself takes time but taking care of 2 ppl takes even more

I had sooo many thoughts, ideas, expectations about what I would be as a parent, before I became a parent, but once you have kids everything goes out the window. Every child is different and you adjust your parenting style to best fit your child. My little one was diagnosed with autism and the way I parent him, isn’t the same way I would parent a neurotypical child. Also, to each their own, but if you tell your kid to get over something, they learn that you are not a trustworthy person and internalize a lot and build resentment.
