Continued from scene 2

You step aside, motioning her in. Jessica slips past you into the house. You close the door, throw the deadbolt, then double-check it.

She sinks onto the couch, legs bouncing, shifting back and forth like she can’t sit still. Her hands press against her thighs, fingers tapping.

“I know this is gonna sound strange,” she says, glancing up at you, “but is it okay if I stay here tonight? I don’t mind sleepin’ on the couch, hell, even the floor, but—” she exhales sharply, shaking her head. “The thought of bein’ alone right now is crazy.”

Before you can answer, a heavy thump rattles the door.

You turn toward the sound. Another dull thud follows, slower this time. You step to the window, push the blinds apart with two fingers, and look outside.

A man stands in the fading light of the porch, swaying slightly. His clothes are torn—a button-down soaked dark with blood, one sleeve missing entirely. His bare arm hangs limp, ripped open near the elbow, muscle and tendon glistening in the streetlights. His head tilts, his jaw slack, mouth slightly open. A smear of red runs from his nose to his chin, drying in jagged streaks. His chest rises and falls, but it’s shallow, erratic.

Then he moves—a slow, uneven step forward, forehead pressing against the door. His fingers twitch, curling like he’s trying to grab something that isn’t there.

Jessica’s voice is quiet but firm. “Is it one of them?”

You let the blinds fall shut. “Yeah.”

She doesn’t hesitate. “You’re gonna need a weapon.”
