Game of Thrones 7x5-6 | Watch Along

PurportedGrey

Every time I watch these episodes again all I think about are the last 6 years worth of Glidus, Alt Shwift X, and Quinn The GM memes and jokes at the expense of D&D. It's been turned into a comedy rather than a Grim Dark Epic Fantasies in it's final act.

Daniel Bjork

Alright what we doin after GOT? If its not The Wire or LOST I riot. The Leftovers is also acceptable.

Chris Bruneau

when all our heroes got together and went north of the wall, I yelled out "avengers assemble" --just couldn't help myself! :)

Chris Bruneau

Well, Girls--you are now beginning to understand some of our frustration with the reduced quality of the writing.

Terry Maturo

Arianna on point with them watering down Tyrion

Diegesis

Sorry about the mix up on the Tiers guys. Got it sorted.

OldManGrim

okay so Tyrion is shocked because Dany's actions are very much tyrant-like; he sees his countrymen roasted to ash, using dragon fire to execute someone...very "Mad King" like.

Athasin

Probably House of the Dragon.

Athasin

Fun Fact: A group of crows is called a murder. A murder of crows.

Chris Bruneau

that is a great show and extremely realistic, I've got cops in my family, trust me

Oscar H

I can't believe I was the only one who was pro Dany/Jon Snow when it came out live...after 7 seasons of the show I grew used to the themes. Aunt/Nephew relation via a non-Targaryen mother is not as incestuous as blood brother/sister doing it. Plus, I knew it was kinda the Targaryen staple anyway. It's still miles as yucky but for me it's because the writing didn't cultivate the storyline to better flesh out their relationship, that's my gripe with it....more so than the incest of it all.

Joe Blankenship

These last 2 seasons have lots of cool stuff to look at, but as far as story and characters go, they really fumble the ball.

Matthew s

Bran and Tyrion fighting for the Least Valuable Player award.

PlasteredPear

Daenerys parents are siblings too btw.

LSTER

ruthless ladies, where is your compassion for the Tarleys 😤

Joeb

Lol every time I rewatch this episode I'm amazed at how insanely ridiculous all the popup npcs are north of the wall, appearing out of thin air to die to some deadly thing a really incredulous number of times

MarisoL

Where did the white walkers get those chains from? And you girls are right, perhaps some of the audience expects Jon and Dany to get together but at this point the characters weren't shown to be romantic interested with each other.

Travis

I think it makes sense for them to watch House of The Dragon. I would love that!

Hennnyy

I remember on my first watch of this show a few years back I stopped at the finale of season 6 cause I heard the quality took a nose dive and I didn’t want to ruin my perception of what I thought to be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Been peeping season 7 with y’all for the first time and my goodness I’m already pissed lmaooo. I agree with every sentiment, it’s like the characters are complete caricatures of themselves. I’ll finish up the show with y’all but I can already feel the heartbreak. Surely it can’t end as bad as I’ve heard it does right?… right? 😭

Chief Doodle

Tyrion having this thinking whilst being the same person that used wildfire is crazy thinking

Ryan’s Biceps

Exactlyyyyy… do they not know that incest happens a lot in Westeros? Or even in heaps of historical royal families.

Christopher Somers

Its gets worse. Like a horrible car accident, but you can’t look away no matter how hard you try.

Dashi

I'm sorry but davos even mentioned jon staring at her "good heart". Not sure if you just missed it but that wasn't something they just added in episode 6

Dashi

its almost like they feel the need to show us that incest is bad and gross (duh we know) It's a show! Incest is a thing that has been said happens! It is what it is

Chris Thompson

Well sure if you want to subject them to more shallow, clunky, ropey-ass writing then sure, get them with the HotD!

Travis

Jeez ok negative Nancy

Christophe

Glimbus and Schwizzy are the reason I can kind of laugh about the downfall of GOT

Christophe

Yeah Dashi hate to sort of agree, it feels a bit performative. Like yeah, I get the initial grossed-out feeling but who tf cares, this isn't real, the actors aren't related, get over it. And honestly, there are worse things in the world than an aunt and nephew who are of a similar age and are consenting adults and never spent any time together growing up getting it on. You can even make an argument that it's completely fine morally, even if it's still okay to be personally grossed out by it. But either way, calm down.

Vasili Brasinikas

The most annoying part about the Sansa/Arya scenes is that yes, they are both smart enough not to fall for Littlefinger's bs, but on top of that, they have Bran there. The guy who sees and knows everything. That whole subplot just feels like manufactured melodrama. While there were warning signs before, these two episodes are really where the show goes careening off a cliff, imo.

Vasili Brasinikas

The episodes do drop breadcrumbs almost immediately after Jon Snow shows up on Dragonstone that this is where they're headed. It brings me no joy to say this, but I just don't think Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke have that kind of chemistry and so it seems to catch a lot of viewers off guard when they really make it explicit in episode 6.

Vasili Brasinikas

I would love if they did The Leftovers because I think they'd really vibe with it, but it's definitely a lesser known show.

Christophe

I forgot how stupid and pointless that whole fight between Arya and Sansa is. I just remembered its dumb conclusion but the whole thing is so incredibly contrived. As to the incest... it's whatever. They didn't grow up together, they're consenting adults, they're the same age, and they still don't even know they're related. The thing that's bad about that relationship is not the incest, it's the fact that their relationship was badly written and Emilia and Kit have zero chemistry together. It doesn't work, it feels like they don't even really like each other and that's why it feels icky and weird, not the fact that they're aunt and nephew. It's just another example of the show choosing to tell, not show, in these later seasons. They tell us Jon and Dany are falling in love with each other. They tell us Tyrion is smart. They tell us we need to worry about Daenerys turning into the Mad Queen. But they don't really show us any of it. Also girls, in these last seasons, don't think too hard about stuff. Don't think the lore will make sense, don't think people are going to be smart, none of it. It won't make sense and you're unfortunately wasting your time trying to figure it out.

Christophe

He did say it and I do think the girls missed it but it wasn't really true, was it. Just because Davos tells us, doesn't mean we got to actually see it. I certainly didn't. Jon didn't really look at her in any special way before that boat scene.

Dashi

I mean we don't have a reason to not believe him either. I'm not saying it's well written (because it's awful) but it's not like it just appeared from thin air this episode. It's at least been breadcrumbed

Eric

Yeah. There's so much wrong with season 7 and unfortunately it'll only gets worse in 8. It's very clear that after the first 4 seasons the writers didn't know how to progress the story and they wanted to wrap GoT up quickly to move on to new projects.

sablo

You guys needs to start accept the incest thing because its part of this world, haha you better get used to it because House of the dragon is wild. Anyways, from Johns perspective why would he not be interested in her? she is perfection, any man would want her., but you tend to look at a lot from a writers perspective.

OldManGrim

so here's the difference: Tyrion using wildfire during war, during a battle was an acceptable tactic because well...it's war! The line being crossed is wiping out a house (they don't know Sam exists, and he took the black thus renouncing his family line). Just because they wouldn't bend the knee, she roasted them alive; what does that say to the common folk when Dany is supposed to be the savior of King's Landing? It's being tyranical.

Ludus Aurea

Let it go buddy. You're wrong, George himself has settled this fake criticism.

Ludus Aurea

I don't know what show you watched, but they definitely had chemistry. To say Tyrion "isn't smart" in the last 2 seasons is not only idiotic it's downright objectively incorrect just like your comment about Dany. His character did not change. He's still making wise calls - Dany is ignoring them because she's an impetuous and pompous extremely entitled child. How you could possibly watch the show and not understand that, with the way it ends, is insane. I suggest actually watching the show again. As in, actually watching it and listening to the dialog and seeing what happens on screen.

Chris Thompson

You know how you guys have quit shows early in the past - from Firefly to Mr Robot - I don’t think too many people would hold it against you if you were to throw in the GoT towel after the next episode. Life really is too short to spend another 7 hours on another season that consists pretty much entirely of all your pet Thrones peeves. You’ll be exhausted by the end of it all, much like the rest of us, although we didn’t have a camera filming our seething rage.

Ludus Aurea

A lot of people are dumb.

Ludus Aurea

HOTD is objectively worse than this show from the first episode. The only good period was like the first 3 episodes and that was a stretch given the needlessly ridiculous violence-for-the-fuck-of-it in the pilot episode.

Ludus Aurea

Have we seen the entire army of the dead? You know the giants at the wall had chains, right? Undoubtedly there were chains lying around in the north as well. Given that you didn't notice the clear chemistry between Dany and Jon at this point though, I see why you can't understand things that aren't explicitly spelled out.

Ludus Aurea

Please watch the show before you comment. It's insane to come say stupid shit like this. They established that the Brotherhood was going to Eastwatch based on the Hounds visions. The little flashback intro even made sure to bring it up for people who can't follow a story like you.

Travis

I agree HOTD isn't as good as GOT but I think if you are someone who truly enjoys this world of Westeros than HOTD is worth a watch because it shows some of the history that you've heard stories of and bringing it to life atleast for me was enjoyable and I think it's unfair to compare the overall quality of both shows because besides the last 2 seasons of GOT that is literally the best seasons of TV I have ever seen and will go down in my book as my favorite TV show ever even tho I don't like the ending but I don't get as upset about it as other people because even with the bad ending it was still an awesome ride. And for the same reasoning I will be tuning in to A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms prequel. Even if it isn't that good it's still a part of that history I would like to see.

MarisoL

There is chemistry no doubt about that but Tyrion implying Jon might have a crush on her is a little crazy.

Kevin Landon

your so lame for running around in the comments like you are

Kevin Landon

Im so glad Arianna cought the annunlment part, a lot of reactors miss this

Joeb

Lol what are you even talking about? The implication of why others are there is obvious, but throughout all of the long sequences of the group ranging north of the wall, cutting in and out of conversations between group members, people sleeping, fighting etc. they make zero effort to even show a glimpse of anybody outside of the main cast. Then a battle happens (polar bear, wights, army of the dead), and they need to keep the 'tension' up so they kill off one or two NPCs that were never shown. Every time you think they've surely killed off all of the extra group members, another few appear in a new death shot. Just really poorly handled, lol.

Christophe

Nah at this point you have to finish it. Go through it like all of us. It's also different if you abandon a show after 1 season or just a couple episodes. You're invested now. Fallacy of sunk costs, yadayada, I know, but it is what it is. I also think Game of Thrones is one of these where you don't really notice how bad it got until after you finish it, you know? Like sure, we all noticed the drop in character writing and other small things, but all of the seemingly contrived or non-sensical plotlines, you still have hope or even expectation that it will all make sense in the end, that it will all come together, because in good shows, that's what happens. It's only after the fact where you notice that no, in fact, it did not come together, and it didn't really make sense to begin with. It's the Sherlock effect.

Chris Thompson

But cosplay with so much hatred in your heart is never a good thing.

Elesh

This one episode, especially the frozen lake scene has so much bullshit it's hard to swallow. 1. When Dany comes with her dragons and everyone mounts it to leave, why in the fk is John Snow ADVANCING while defending himself instead of backing up. That is so stupid 2. How do they know where to go from the wall? They just pick a random direction and poof there's that mountain you saw in the fire oh wow how lucky of us. 3. White walkers are a hive mind except for the generals, so why is the zombie bear in the middle of nowhere and doesn't even alert the others to the presence of humans? 4. Also when Jon sends Gendry to alert the others, how does he know he's the fastest? HE MET HIM YESTERDAY 5. Just before Gendry is sent away, we have a scene with him that confirms he has never been in such cold climate and doesn't handle it well, yet Jon trusts that this guy that is in such cold for the first time won't just die of hypothermia on the way? Instead of sending someone like, i don't know...THORMUND WHO SPEND HIS WHOLE LIFE OUTSIDE THE WALL!?! 6. The sheer fact that just as they started running away from the walkers they have this perfect haven next to them with a small rock in the middle surrounded by crumbling frozen lake, how fortunate! 7. The whole fight scene is just so dumb. Ofc they get perfectly drip fed with enemies instead of being swarmed and literally crushed by the weight of thousands zombies on them without a chance to even move around, but no the zombies just attack in small waves, small enough to handle. 8. Thormund getting attacked is so laughably bad, he just gets hugged by the zombies instead of torn and bitten to pieces. Like we see some throw away character get eaten in seconds while every of the "heroes" just gets hugged by the zombies hahaha 9. The night king, the badass mother f'er that he is, snipes one of the dragons that was flying super fast and was a hard target, and then when drogon sits with dany and other crew on the rock for like 5 minutes he just doesn't throw his spear, because reasons? What took him so long he couldn't throw another spear at drogon that was a literal sitting duck? He was reloading or what?! 10. When Jon is under water, not only does he hold his breath for insane amount of time, the night king just leaves his one of biggest human enemies instead of confirming the kill. I'd write more but I just get pissed off more and more. Season 7 and 8 have some great moments but they are just that, moments. D&D (writers of the show) are absolute idiots. Loved the reaction though.

Adam Vialpando

George is part of the proble to be fair. D&D did okay when adapting others' material. They actually did it very well in fact. When they had to make it up themselves using only George's barebones plot notes it started to slowly get worse. They COULD have made the ending work given enough time. HBO even offered them an increased budget to make as many episodes as they wanted. D&D are some of the few showrunners to say no to more episodes. Hell, they could have just walked away and let someone else take over if they were tired of the show. They deserve their failure since they squandered all the support and goodwill they got that others would have killed for.

2026-09-05 05:00 The gang worried about Jon 'kissing' Daenerys hahahahaahahaa How cute lmao For real thought for all the faults in Season 7 that romance was sort of set up pretty organically, you got to see Jon and Daenerys going from being dubious about each other to showing respect and Daenerys respecting Jon for his resolve and commitment to his cause..Davos even said something last episode, from Daenerys being super worried about Jon leaving and saying she had 'Grown used to the King in the North" right before he left...It didn't necessarily come out of nowhere to me

To Daenerys burning men: "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword" Btw. girls have big hatred for character lacking in their perspective, the viewers perspective. I don't know why they do that. Why be pissed off at maesters who had to doubt things for hundreds of years. Then we get a more lacking writing and they somehow can explain it with trying to understand the character's actions. It makes me so confused.

Zane Platt

The burgeoning interest between Jon and Dany was very much obvious. I am genuinely amazed that the girls somehow didn't see it and are acting like it is in any way out of left field. It was suggested heavily and it makes perfect sense when you consider he is King of the North and a relationship between them would work politcally and romantically (because jon doesn't know they are related and Dany wouldn't care either way)

Zane Platt

Yeah, I don't get their surprise at all. It is very clearly suggested throughout their interactions together, I think they just don't want it to happen because of their blood relationship and so they convinced themselves it wasn't happening

Zane Platt

Really like the girls and agree with a lot of their critiques but this was a hard reaction to watch because they misconstrued a lot or just didn't seem to pick up on a bunch of things that were pretty clear (jon and dany chief among them)

Pabb

They look at it from viewer's perspective with their extended knowledge and perspective. Jon sees competent, unique woman who, let's be honest, is Emilia Clarke

Pabb

It has been like that since season 1, but big drop already happend after season 4

Pabb

I think Daenerys was looking over the wall as a sort of depression after the loss of her child. An easter egg: iirc Daenerys dragons are the first who flew beyond The Wall. All the other dragons of Targaryens who visited Night's Watch were too scared to cross to the other side.

Jonathan Blaze

They didn't criticize Jon for not getting on the dragon and continuing to fight, which directly contributed to the NK getting a dragon.

Shahbaj Mohammad

This dumass actually going around on comments and spitting nonsense like some retard is hilarious.

Eric

Shahbaj, I love the fact that Dumb and Dumber made such a rush job of season 7 and 8 because they desperately wanted to start on their own, new Star Wars project but then, because season 8 especially was such a failure Kathleen Kennedy said "Nah, never mind". And now they've done absolutely nothing noteworthy since GoT. That's that sweet sweet Karma.

Shahbaj Mohammad

Not Really, like yeah he should've got on an left fast and if the dragon on the ground died I'd blame him. But the flying one was killed so if they left a bit sooner, one would still be sniped from the back as no one expected the NK to do that and they would let their guard down when on air.

Aj

@Ludus You have no idea what you're on about, pal

Christina Kobityak

I honestly don’t understand how they watch it when they don’t get half of it.

Christina Kobityak

They actually have great chemistry, it’s so clear in the interviews and in the well written scenes. But no amount of chemistry could save that shitwriting( look at Jaime and Brienne for example, how they ruined them)

LucasHolliday

I gotta say, you two missed some stuff here. The whole scene in the Dragonmont with the cave of obsidian and the drawings on the walls is an extremely pivotal point in their budding thing. Beyond that, Davos points out his attraction to her in that 4th episode. And on top of that, you both say that he's already smitten by her when he walked in the Throne room for the first time and meets her. Maybe the actors didn't actually play up the connection as well, but the show has always been leaning toward this outcome that they might hook up. We the viewers know that's not good, but they don't. Jon doesn't, at that stage he is a young battle weary man who was born a bastard and happened to be anointed King in the North after a lot of strife and death and loss. Now between the newfound autonomy as a king and the youth and the impending doom that makes life and connection that much more precious/valued, the relationship of two young monarchs seems to make sense. Again, their acting while not bad at all, might not play on that so clearly, and that is a mistake. But to say they don't play on it at all is inaccurate.

This episode was the point where the writers got extremely sloppy with the show. The writing had already taken a step back but it was still working given the circumstances with GRR Martin. Everything breaks down in terms of continuity from here on out, starting with the insane Gendry / raven / dragon time travel paradox, the character dilution, and the constant use of the "insurmountable odds battle" only to get saved in the nick of time trope. Dragons come in clutch for the 10th time, UNC Benj saves the day again. One of the things that was so unique about this show was that all the protagonists you rooted for, no matter how integral to the story arc, were just as vulnerable to an untimely death as anyone else. It's here where the heroes become more or less god tier protected from reality. The show still has some redeeming qualities after this episode but they become fewer and further in between. Such a tragic waste of epic storytelling when it's all said and done. I hope the reboot in 20 years finds some justice for the audience.

sheriffjt

I wish people could just let others like things instead of constantly telling everyone how bad they think it is.

A Hazy IPA Beer Drinker

I'm pretty sure this episode, being like 7 years old now has been well hashed out at this point. If you like it, great, no complaints from me. My opinion shouldn't have any bearing on how others view the show, it's just my take. The show is pretty much a masterpiece up until this point, but it's hard for me not to notice how sloppy the story arc is compared to what came before it.

Jonathan Raban

.... yeah ok, it's impossible to watch something « not comedy » with you guys... I tried Breaking Bad : the last seasons, that was just you bitching EVE-RY-TIME Walter spoke or was on screen ! I tried Game of Thrones (to give a second chance) : in like 60% of each episodes, you just singing, laughing, talking over people on screen… and later, when some things come up, you don’t know them or/and you’re bichin about it coz of course, it’s like it’s coming from nowhere… it’s F’ing frustrating I watched « What We Do In The Shadows » with you, and now I watch « Arrested Development » with you… it’s fun, you’re laughing (way more of course, but not that much either), and strangely enough, you talk less over for theses shows… so yeah, I get it now : Comedy is ok, but serious stuff ? not again
